Campus Watch: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department patrol officers between Wednesday, 5/19/10 and Thursday, 5/20/10. Behavior Concerns Advice Line (BCAL) The Behavior Concerns Advice Line (BCAL) is a partnership among the Office of the Dean of Students, Counseling and Mental Health Center (CMHC), Employee Assistance Program (EAP), and the University of Texas Police Department (UTPD). BCAL provides a central resource for UT faculty, students, and staff who may have concerns about the behavior or well-being of another member of the campus community. By calling BCAL at 512-232-5050, callers may talk with trained staff members who will assist the caller in exploring available options and strategies as well as referrals to appropriate campus support networks. Come join us on Face Book at: http://www.facebook.com/#!/utaustinpolice ART BUILDING, 2301 San Jacinto Blvd Graffiti: A UT Police Officer discovered graffiti written in various locations inside the Art Building. The graffiti consisted of words or letters written in different colors of paint or ink. Damage value: Unknown at this time. Discovered on: 5-20-10, at 12:05 AM. PERRY-CASTANEDA LIBRARY, 101 East 21st Street Theft: A black and white leopard print wallet containing $200.00 in Taiwanese cash, a credit card and personal identification was reported stolen after being left unsecured and unattended on top of a table located on the 5th floor. Loss value: $27.00. Occurred between: 5-12-10 and 5-13-10. SAN JACINTO RESIDENCE HALL, 309 East 21st Street Burglary of Residence: A UT student reported an unknown subject had entered into his unsecured dormitory room and took $6.00 in cash, Apple iPod, and a Blackberry cellular telephone. Loss value: $696.00. Occurred on: 5-19-10, between, 8:00 AM and 8:20 AM. Crime Prevention Tip: Just like during Moove-In thieves are looking for opportunities to commit a crime. Thieves relish confusion. Take the time to lock your dormitory room and secure your property. 1800 BLOCK GUADALUPE Driving While Intoxicated: A UT Police Officer observed a Lexus travelling the wrong way on a posted One-Way street. During the traffic investigation, the officer asked the UT student for his driver's license and proof of insurance. The officer was handed a stack of papers that turned out to be the student's homework. As the investigation progressed, the officer detected a very strong odor of alcohol on the driver's breath and learned the subject had been to several locations along 6th Street. The driver admitted to having consumed too much. The officer administered the Standardized Field Sobriety tests to the student. Who displayed several clues that indicated he was intoxicated. The student was taken into custody for Driving While Intoxicated and was transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 5-20-10, at 2:12AM. 2100 BLOCK SAN JACINTO BLVD Evading Arrest or Detention / Disregard Stop Sign / Assist Outside Agency: A UT Police Officer saw a non-UT subject run through a controlled intersection without stopping on his bicycle. The officer caught up to the bicyclist and ordered him to stop. The subject looked at the officer and attempted to peddle faster in a vain attempt to outrun the officer. The officer, keeping pace with the subject, again told the subject to stop. Again the subject looked at the officer and told the officer, “No.” The subject had a change of heart and decided to stop only after the officer was preparing to stop the subject's bicycle for him. The subject was taken into custody for Evading Arrest or Detention and Running through the Stop Sign. As the investigation continued, the officer soon learned the subject had an Outstanding Outside Agency Arrest Warrant for Running a Red Light. The subject was transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 5-20-10, at 1:30 AM. Crime Prevention Tip: Section 551.101 of the Texas Transportation Code identifies the rights and duties of a person operating a bicycle in the State of Texas. Chapter 13 of the Texas Driver's handbook instructs all bicyclists that they must obey the same traffic laws as if they were operating a motorized vehicle. CAMPUS WIDE: Non-Criminal Calls: In addition to the above criminal cases, the University of Texas Police Department responded to 21 Alarm Calls, 1 Suspicious Activity Report, and 7 Unsecured Door Reports between 05/19/10 and 05/20/10.
