Campus Watch: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department between Friday, 06/25/10 and Monday, 06/28/10. ****New Service Brought to You by UTPD**** UTPD is happy to announce online property registration. Come join us on Face Book at: http://www.facebook.com/#!/utaustinpolice LEE & JOE JAMAIL TEXAS SWIMMING CENTER, 1900 Red River Assault by Contact: A non-UT subject reported being assaulted by another non-UT subject during a swim meet. The victim claimed the suspect had grabbed him by the neck while the alleged suspect was escorting the victim out of a restricted area. During the investigation, the officer learned the victim had been inside a restricted area and had been told by UT staff that he needed to leave the area. Upon his return, the alleged suspect and the staff member informed the victim he had to leave. The victim turned toward the alleged suspect and began used a certain verb followed by a pronoun to address the alleged suspect. The words used are best not repeated in this correspondence. The victim then pushed the alleged suspect. As the alleged suspect and the UT staff member were escorting the victim from the restricted area, the alleged suspect put his open, flat hand on the victim's back. Witnesses confirmed the alleged suspect had not “grabbed” the victim by the neck. Niether party was injured or wished to pursue charges. Occurre don 06/27/10 at 4:05 pm. PETER T. FLAWN ACADEMIC CENTER, #2 West Mall Criminal Trespass: A UT staff member reported a non-UT subject was inside a restricted area using the computers in the area. During the investigation, the officers located the subject and soon learned the subject had been issued a prior Criminal Trespass Warning for the same area. The subject was taken into custody for Criminal Trespass and was transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 6-25-10, at 12:15 PM. MAIN BUILDING, #1 South Mall Theft: A UT student reported her Dell D410 laptop computer was stolen sometime while she was inside the building. The student was not sure just where she left her laptop, but she had checked all of the places she visited on the 1st floor, 16th floor and 19th floor of the building. Loss value: $800.00. Occurred on 06/25/10 between 3:00 pm and 5:00 pm. TURTLE POND & GUADALUPE STREET Assault By Contact: Several non-UT people, who were on campus for a photography camp, reported an unknown subject had approached each one of them at different places along Guadalupe Street, by the Main Building and the Turtle Pond and asked them to take pictures of him. The subject would then ask for a hug and or a kiss from the photography campers. When any of the campers refused such a request, the subject would make unwanted contact with them. The suspect hugged some of the campers without permission. One camper received an unwanted kiss on the hand and a third was touch on her upper torso. The suspect was described as an Asian male in his early 30's, “short” stature, medium build with a dark complexion and a “clean cut” appearance with “neat” black hair and wearing a short sleeve pin stripped shirt and khaki pants. Occurred on 06/26/10 between 10:30 am and 1:15 pm. UNION BUILDING, #4 West Mall Theft: A brown and tan colored Schwinn bicycle was stolen while it was “secured” with a cable lock to the bicycle racks located on the northwest corner of the Union Building. Loss value: $100.00. Occurred between 06/10/10 at 9:45 am and 06/11/10 at 1:00 pm. 2300 San Jacinto Public Intoxication: A non-UT subject was found “passed out” on a bus stop bench. While officers attempted to wake the subject, the subject mumbled that he would, for lack of a better phrase, end the officer's existence. When the subject saw the person who was waking him was a police officer, he quickly sat up and began to answer the officer's questions until he again passed out. The subject was awakened again and found to have consumed alcoholic beverages to the point he was deemed to be a physical endangerment to himself and to anyone trying to wake him up from a sleep. Occurred on 06/27/10 at 1:51 am. 2500 Speedway Graffiti: White paint was used to draw a symbol on the side of a street lamp pole located on the west side of the roadway. Removal cost: $45.00. Discovered on 06/25/10 at 9:21 AM. 400 East 23rd Street Theft: A UT student reported he had placed his wallet and other personal items on the bus seat next to where he was sitting while riding the bus. The subject exited the bus at the bus stop located at 23rd Street and San Jacinto to throw away a drink cup. The subject got back on the bus and rode the bus to the 2200 block of Guadalupe. After exiting the bus, the subject realized his white plastic wallet containing various identification cards, a credit card and $3,000.00 in cash was stolen. Loss value: $3,005.00. Occurred on 06/11/10. Reported on 06/25/10 at 11:05 am. 500 West 26th Street Driving While Intoxicated / Driving While License is Invalid / Resisting Arrest: A non-UT subject was stopped for speeding, failing to stop at the designated point for a red light and stopping at a flashing yellow light while driving a blue Toyota Yaris. The subject showed several classic signs of intoxication. During a testing process to determine if the subject was intoxicated, the subject became argumentative and claimed he wanted to go home; which according to him was “two feet away.” The subject was found to be under the influence of alcohol to the point he was deemed to have been driving while intoxicated. The subject was also found to have been driving with an invalid driver' license. The subject did not agree with the decision for his arrest and began to resist the arrest process to the point the officers needed to apply physical control techniques to handcuff the suspect. Occurred on o6/26/10 at 3:05 am. CAMPUS WIDE: Non-Criminal Calls: In addition to the above criminal cases, the University of Texas Police Department responded to 28 Alarm Calls, 2 “Police Help” Call Box Activations, 5 Fire Alarms, 1 Suspicious Activity Report, 1 Medical Emergency Report, 2 Public Assist Requests, 2 Malfunctioning Light Reports and 14 Unsecured Door Reports between 06/25/10 and 06/28/10. RAD Program For Women, Now Available (Classes are FREE) Advanced RAD Classes Being Held for RAD Class Graduates The RAD program is a 16-hour course of realistic self-defense tactics and techniques for women that covers assault prevention and risk reduction while progressing on to basic hands-on defense training. http://www.utexas.edu/police/rad/ Defensive Driving: Learn Defensive Driving from a UTPD Police Officer. UTPD generally schedules a Defensive Driving Class approximately once a month – based on need. The classes meet in the University Police Building, Room 1.318, located at 2201 Robert Dedman Dr (east of Memorial Stadium). The cost for the course is $25.00 (check or cash) payable on class date. If paying in cash, please bring the exact amount because change may not be available. You will also need to bring your driver's license. BCAL provides a central resource for UT faculty, students, and staff who may have concerns about the behavior or well-being of another member of the campus community.
