Report for 07/05/2010

Campus Watch: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department between Friday, 07/02/10 and Monday, 07/05/10. ****New Service Brought to You by UTPD**** UTPD is happy to announce online property registration. Items with a serial number such as laptops, MP3 players, cell phones, electronics, and bikes are eligible. Registering your property is very helpful in theft investigations and in returning lost property to its rightful owner. Without identifying information, recovering stolen property is virtually impossible. Logon to https://www.utexas.edu/police/property/ to register your property today. *****ADMINISTRATIVE MESSAGE ****** Are you a Fan of the University of Texas Police Department? The container contained a green leafy substance that was later confirmed to be marijuana. Occurred on: 7-04-10, at 2:51 PM. BRAZOS PARKING GARAGE, 200 East Martin Luther King Blvd. Burglary of Motor Vehicle: A Garmin GPS system, along with the power cord and a power cord for an IPod were stolen from a Ford F150 truck after the passenger side window had been broken out. Loss value: $150.00. Repair loss: $150.00. Occurred on: 7-03-10 between 2:422 PM and 6:08 PM. Crime Prevention Tip: There is an increased interest in portable GPS systems. Not just from the consumer's point of view …affordability, but from the criminal's point of view, portability. Take a few extra minutes and remove items from plain view that you are leaving inside your vehicle. Remember criminals like to window shop just as much as the next person. Only difference is they are looking to steal...not buy. PERRY-CASTANEDA LIBRARY, 101 East 21st Street Criminal Trespass Warning / Suspicious Activity: A non-UT subject approached a UT staff member and requested to checkout some UT equipment. The subjects request was denied since he not enrolled as a student nor was he employed by the University of Texas. The subject became very upset and began, what is best described as, “throwing a tantrum.” The subject kicked over a trashcan and pushed a computer monitor to the floor. The responding officers located the subject as he was leaving the building. The officers determined the UT owned property was not damaged during the tirade. The subject was issued a written Criminal Trespass Warning and was escorted from campus. Occurred on: 7-03-10, at 12:08 PM. PERRY-CASTANEDA LIBRARY, 101 East 21st Street Theft: A Blackberry cellular telephone was reported stolen from a 3rd floor men's restroom after the property was left unattended and unsecured on top of the counter. Loss value: $200.00. Occurred on: 7-01-10 between 5:00 PM and 6:00 PM. SAN ANTONIO PARKING GARAGE, 2420 San Antonio Street Criminal Trespass Warning (2 Counts): A UT Police Officer observed fireworks being launched from the top level of the parking garage. During the investigation, the officer located two non-UT subjects on the top level. When asked what they were doing, one subject shrugged, pointed and told the officer that it was obvious what they were doing. Both subjects were issued written Criminal Trespass Warnings and were escorted from the area. Occurred on: 7-04-10, at 2:30 AM. UNION BUILDING, #4 West Mall Theft: A white Apple laptop computer was stolen after it was left unattended and unsecured inside the 3rd floor lounge area for over 30 minutes. Loss value: $1,000.00. Occurred on: 7-03-10, between 5:00 PM and 5:30 PM. Crime Prevention Tip: There was one fact in this case that is the norm in approx 95% of all reported thefts. The owner does not know the model number or serial number for the property that is being reported stolen. This summer UTPD debuted a new property registration site that allows students, staff and faculty members to create a record of their property that includes the make, model, and more importantly the serial number. Take a minute and register your property. www.utexas.edu/police/property 100 BLOCK WEST 6th STREET Disorderly Conduct-Fighting / Assist Outside Agency: An unknown subject reported two individuals were fighting at the bus stop located on the west side of the O`Henry Hall. The subject reported the suspect was walking away from the area. The officer located the suspect. During the investigation, the officer learned the suspect had placed his arm across the shoulders of the victim's girlfriend. The subject was told to remove the offensive appendage. The suspect removed his arm and struck the victim knocking him out. The suspect was taken into custody for Disorderly Conduct- Fighting in a Public Place. The officer soon learned the victim had six outstanding Outside Agency arrest warrants. The victim was also taken into custody and both were transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 7-03-10, at 2:34 AM.
