Loss value: $380.00. Occurred on 07/15/10 between 2:30 pm and 4:40 pm. Crime Prevention Tip: A theft only takes seconds to commit. Even if the owner of the stolen property is in the same room as the property. Thefts from the basketball courts are a regular occurrence. The reason for this is simple. Many people leave their property on the bleachers while they play basketball. For those of you who have never played basketball, it is very difficult to pay attention to anything when playing basketball. Never leave your property unattended while playing basketball or using the sweet indoor track at Gregory Gym. Use a locker to secure your property while working out and only bring the property you need to bring with you when going to the gym. SPEEDWAY GARAGE, 105 East 27th Street Theft: A grey Specialized Rock-hopper bicycle was stolen while it was “secured” with a cable lock to a bicycle rack located inside the parking garage. Loss value: $500.00. Occurred on 07/15/10 between 8:00 am and 8:40 pm. Crime Prevention Tip: Cable locks offer very little bicycle security. Many bicycle thieves carry hand tools with them that allow them to easily cut a cable lock. The UT Police Department's minimum recommendation for bicycle security is a quality U-lock. If you truly want to protect your transportation, use a U-lock and an independently locking cable lock at the same time. That forces the thief to carry two different types of tools to steal the bike and takes the thief twice as long to defeat both locks. UNIVERSITY POLICE BUILDING, 2201 Robert Dedman Theft: A UT student went to the police department to report his UT Parking Permit had been stolen and used without his permission. The student did not know where or when the permit was stolen, but learned the permit was on a vehicle that was issued a citation by UT's Parking and Transportation Services for a parking violation. The victim, and the owner of the car that received the citation are working out a payment plan for the citation and a return of the permit in lieu of criminal charges being filed. The UT student and the boyfriend began to exchange words and shoves when the other non-UT subject grabbed the boyfriend from behind to allow the student to initiate several strikes against the boyfriend. The boyfriend broke free and began to defend himself by the time the officers arrived. The UT student and his friend were both found to be under the influence of an alcoholic beverage to the point they were found to be under the influence of alcoholic beverages to the point they were deemed to be a danger to themselves and the boyfriend.
