Loss value: $90.00. Occurred between: 8-26-10 and 8-27-10. Crime Prevention Tip: If you are keeping track, and I am sure some of you are, there have been a total of 14 reported stolen bicycles since 8-20-10. All of the bicycles, except for one, had been secured with self-locking cable locks. If you are commuting and your primary means of transportation is your bicycle, I would like to remind you the City of Austin is one of the top 10 cities with a high theft rate for bicycles. Evaluate your locking system. If you are using a self-locking cable lock as your primary lock, you might want to consider upgrading your security. We recommend a two lock locking system to deter a would-be thief. This system uses a U-shaped lock as the primary lock, as well as a self-locking cable lock. To aid in the recovery of your property, take a minute and register your property. www.utexas.edu/parking/transportation/biking/registration LITTLEFIELD DORMITORY, 201 West Dean Keeton Criminal Mischief / Criminal Trespass: A UT student reported her now ex-boyfriend became overly aggressive with her. The suspect took her keys, wallet, and cellular telephone and put them into his pockets and refused to give them back. The suspect then took the student’s computer and smashed it. The student told the suspect to leave her room, leave the dormitory and return her personal property. The suspect refused to comply with her requests. The suspect did leave, but took the student’s property with him. The student saw the suspect outside her dormitory and was able to get her property back…minus the destroyed laptop computer. At this time charges are pending. Loss value: $1,000.00. Occurred on: 8-25-10 at 3:00 PM. Crime Prevention Tip: This reads as if it were a scene straight out of the “Campus Issues” play. Sadly it is not, this was a real life situation for a UT student. Not too many students have had to face a situation like this, and not too many students would know how to de-esclate this situation. So start asking yourself what would you do? What would be your game plan in this scenario? I would like to encourage you to look into taking a self defense class.
