Campus Watch: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department between Monday, Tuesday, 08-31-10 and Wednesday, 09-01-10. Featured Service Emergency Text Message Service The University of Texas at Austin and its police department are responsible for notifying faculty, staff, and students of emergency situations (e.g., inclement weather, building evacuations, campus closures, etc.). The University employs a wide variety of tools to make sure everyone on campus is informed during an emergency event—including text messaging. In order to accomplish emergency text messaging more effectively, the University is collecting cell phone numbers from members of our campus community. Effective August 26, 2009, this database of cell phone numbers will be used for emergency text messages. Please complete the form at http://www.utexas.edu/cellphonealert so you will become an integral part of this important emergency notification system and help the university to achieve the highest standards of campus and community safety. ALMETRIS DUREN HALL, 2624 Whitis Ave. Theft: A red and white Traice aluminum road bicycle was stolen from the bike racks located on the east side of the building. During the investigation, the officer learned the U-shaped lock had not been properly installed when the bicycle was secured to the bike rack. Loss value: $399.00. Occurred between 8-27-10 and 8-31-10. ALUMNI CENTER, 2110 San Jacinto Blvd. Criminal Trespass Warning: A UT staff member reported a non-UT subject had entered into the building, after hours, and had been asked to leave. The subject had refused to leave, stating he had paid for a membership. He was unable to provide the officer with a receipt. The subject was issued a written Criminal Trespass Warning and was escorted from the area. Occurred on: 8-31-10, at 7:41 PM. GOLDSMITH, #5 West Mall Theft: A yellow Trek mountain bicycle was stolen from the bike rack located on the east side of the building after being secured with a self-locking cable lock. Loss value: $210.00. Occurred on: 8-31-10, between 1:00 PM and 5:00 PM. INTRAMURAL FIELDS, 4901 Guadalupe Burglary of Motor Vehicle / Criminal Mischief (Criminal Episode): A UT student reported the rear triangle window of his Honda had been broken out in an attempt to gain entry into his vehicle. The student stated no personal property had been taken. A second victim reported the rear triangle window of his Chevy had also been broken out. During the investigation, the officer learned his wallet, credit cards, $45.00 in cash, four textbooks, and his personal identification had been stolen. A third victim reported his wallet, personal identification, and several credit cards had been stolen from his vehicle after he forgot to secure the vehicle prior to playing soccer. As the investigation continued, a witness reported seeing an unknown subject wearing a grey t-shirt hanging around the vehicles. The subject was described as a white male, short, with sandy blond hair. The witness stated the subject left the area in a newer model passenger car. Total loss value personal property: $315.00. Total repair damage: $300.00. Occurred on: 8-31-10, between 5:30 PM and 7:45 PM. CAMPUS WIDE: Non-Criminal Calls: In addition to the above criminal cases, the University of Texas Police Department responded to 23 Alarm Calls, 2 Fire Alarm Calls, 2 Suspicious Activity Reports, 1 Public Assist request, and 1 Unsecured Door Report between 08/31/10 and 09/01/10.
