Campus Watch: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department between Wednesday. 09/01/10 and Thursday, 09/02/10. Featured Service Emergency Text Message Service The University of Texas at Austin and its police department are responsible for notifying faculty, staff, and students of emergency situations (e.g., inclement weather, building evacuations, campus closures, etc.). The University employs a wide variety of tools to make sure everyone on campus is informed during an emergency event—including text messaging. In order to accomplish emergency text messaging more effectively, the University is collecting cell phone numbers from members of our campus community. Effective August 26, 2009, this database of cell phone numbers will be used for emergency text messages. Please complete the form at http://www.utexas.edu/cellphonealert so you will become an integral part of this important emergency notification system and help the university to achieve the highest standards of campus and community safety. JESTER CENTER WEST, 201 East 21st Street Theft: A white Apple i-Phone 3GS was stolen when it was left in the southeast corner of the Spanish Oaks Terrace while the owner played dodgeball. Loss value: $100.00. Occurred on 09/01/10 between 9:00 pm and 9:15 pm. L. THEO BELLMONT HALL, 2109 San Jacinto Burglary: A Dell D610 laptop computer was stolen from a secured 4th floor office. Loss value: $800.00. Occurred between 08/31/10 at 3:00 pm and 09/01/10 at 9:00 am. PERRY-CASTANEDA LIBRARY, 101 East 21st Street INDECENT EXPOSURE (2 counts) / DISORDERLY CONDUCT: OFFENSIVE GESTURE: A UT student used the library’s on-line helpdesk to report a non-UT subject had sat across the table from her and pretended to sleep. Occassionaly, the subject would look under the table as if attempting to look up the student’s dress. The student then observed the subject with his pants unzipped and exposing his essence, if you will. The student yelled as the subject began to grasp the previously mentioned essence. The subject fled from the area. Several officers, including yours truly, responded to the library and intiated a search for the subject. During the search, several concerned students flagged down officers and provided accounts of seeing the subject. One student reported the subject had changed shirts. Another student reported seeing the subject rolling on the floor under the desks. While on the 5th floor, a second UT student reported a subject matching the description had exposed himself to her while making an attempt to please himself. Finally, a student ran from the 4th floor to the 5th floor and reported the suspect was on the 4th floor. The subject was located and taken into custody. Occurred on 09/01/10 between 3:50 PM and 5:00 PM. Crime Prevention Tip: There are several theories pertaining to sexual violence which state sexual assaultive behavior is often preceded by other behaviors of concern like peeping, theft of items like undergarments, indecent exposure and assault by contact cases like gropping. This does not mean that every such case in indicative of a future sexual assault, but it does show the importance of immediately reporting such behavior to the police department. The UT Police Department is a 24-hour per day agency and is always available. Please save the UT Police Dispatcher number to your cell phone and use it anytime you see suspicious or criminal behavior. The UT Police Dispatcher canbe reached at 512-471-4441. UT ADMINISTRATION BUILDING, 1616 Guadalupe Theft: A soft drink and a bottle of water were stolen out of refrigerator located inside a 2nd floor storage room. During the investigation it was learned that thefts of drinks from this refrigerator has been an on-going problem. Loss value: $2.50. Occurred between 08/31/10 at 5:00 pm and 09/01/10 at 8:00 am. CAMPUS WIDE: Non-Criminal Calls: In addition to the above criminal cases, the University of Texas Police Department responded to 18 Alarm Calls, 3 Suspicious Activity Reports, 2 Suspicious Odor Reports, 2 Collision Reports and 1 Unsecured Door Reports between 09/01/10 and 09/02/10.
