Campus Watch: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department between Thursday, 09/02/10 and Friday, 09-04-10. * * * * ADMINISTRATIVE MESSAGE * * * * You are cordially invited to attend The University of Texas at Austin Police Department’s Citizen Police Academy. The Citizen Police Academy is a course designed to give the public a better understanding of the Police Department. The goal of the Academy is to increase rapport between the Police Department and our community by providing citizens with enough information to dispel any suspicions or misconceptions they may have about the police. The Citizen Police Academy begins on Monday, October 4, 2010, and continues every Monday night from 6:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. for seven weeks concluding on November 15, 20010. Attendance at six of the seven nights is required for graduation. Applicants are subject to criminal background check. If you are interested in attending the Citizen Police Academy please complete the attached application and email Captain Don Verett at don.verett@austin.utexas.edu. The deadline to apply is September 29, 2010 and class size is limited. Robert E. Dahlstrom Chief of Police Featured Service Emergency Text Message Service The University of Texas at Austin and its police department are responsible for notifying faculty, staff, and students of emergency situations (e.g., inclement weather, building evacuations, campus closures, etc.). The University employs a wide variety of tools to make sure everyone on campus is informed during an emergency event—including text messaging. In order to accomplish emergency text messaging more effectively, the University is collecting cell phone numbers from members of our campus community. Effective August 26, 2009, this database of cell phone numbers will be used for emergency text messages. Please complete the form at http://www.utexas.edu/cellphonealert so you will become an integral part of this important emergency notification system and help the university to achieve the highest standards of campus and community safety. BELMONT HALL, 2109 San Jacinto Blvd. Theft: A UT staff member reported two UT Athletic Staff shirts were stolen from inside a secured 2nd floor office. Loss value: $90.00. Occurred between: 9-01-10 and 9-02-10. BRAZOS PARKING GARAGE, 200 East Martin Luther King Blvd. Burglary of Motor Vehicle (2 Counts): A non-UT subject reported his two Toshiba laptop computers had been stolen from the back seat of his vehicle after the rear window was broken. During the investigation, the officer discovered a second vehicle also had a broken rear window. The officer learned a Garmin GPS had been removed from the glove box. Loss value: $2,620.00. Occurred on: 9-02-10, between 1:20 PM and 3:00 PM. GOLDSMITH HALL, #5 West Mall Criminal Trespass Warning / Disorderly Conduct-Lewd Conduct: A UT staff member reported a non-UT male subject was inside the women’s restroom and had been in there for over thirty minutes. The staff member stated the subject was standing at the stall door watching as females entered to use the facilities. During the investigation, the subject informed the officers that he was there using the facilities for its intended purpose. The subject was issued a field release citation for Disorderly Conduct-Lewd Conduct as well as a written Criminal Trespass Warning for the area. Subject is described as: White Male, 24 years of age, 5’-07”, 135 pounds, short spiked brown hair and brown eyes. The subject was last seen wearing a black t-shirt with a design on the front. Crime Prevention Tip: Never let your guard down. Because there is a posted sign on the outside of the door denoting who is allowed in…this will not stop perversion. GRADUATE SCHOOL OF BUSINESS, 100 East 21st Street Assault by Contact: A staff member reported another UT staff member assaulted her. The incident is under investigation. Occurred on: 9-02-10. PAINTER HALL, 103 West 24th Street Theft: A calculus textbook was reported stolen after being left unattended and unsecured on top of a desk located outside a 2nd floor office. Loss value: $100.00. Occurred on: 9-02-10 between 1:30 PM and 1:47 PM. SID RICHARDSON HALL, 2300 Red River Theft: A brown leather wallet containing several credit cards, personal identification, checkbook, and $71.00 in cash were stolen from an unsecured 3rd floor office. During the investigation, the officer learned the wallet had been placed inside an unsecured desk drawer. Prior to the reported theft, another UT staff member had seen an unknown suspicious subject standing outside of the unoccupied and unsecured office. The subject was described as: Black male with a “Bronze color, 5’-09”, 165 pounds. He was last seen wearing a green polo shirt with yellow strips and dark colored pants. Prior to the officers arrival, the victims wallet was recovered inside a 2nd floor men’s restroom. Loss value: $71.00. CAMPUS WIDE: Non-Criminal Calls: In addition to the above criminal cases, the University of Texas Police Department responded to 28 Alarm Calls, 3 Suspicious Activity Reports, 2 Suspicious Odor Reports, 2 Collision Reports and 1 Unsecured Door Reports between 09/03/10 and 09/04/10.
