Campus Watch: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department between Friday, 09-04-10 and Tuesday, 09-07-10. * * * * ADMINISTRATIVE MESSAGE * * * * You are cordially invited to attend The University of Texas at Austin Police Department’s Citizen Police Academy. The Citizen Police Academy is a course designed to give the public a better understanding of the Police Department. The goal of the Academy is to increase rapport between the Police Department and our community by providing citizens with enough information to dispel any suspicions or misconceptions they may have about the police. The Citizen Police Academy begins on Monday, October 4, 2010, and continues every Monday night from 6:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. for seven weeks concluding on November 15, 20010. Attendance at six of the seven nights is required for graduation. Applicants are subject to criminal background check. If you are interested in attending the Citizen Police Academy please complete the attached application and email Captain Don Verett at don.verett@austin.utexas.edu. The deadline to apply is September 29, 2010 and class size is limited. Robert E. Dahlstrom Chief of Police Featured Service RAD Program For Women, Now Available (Classes are FREE) Advanced RAD Classes Being Held for RAD Class Graduates The RAD program is a 16-hour course of realistic self-defense tactics and techniques for women that covers assault prevention and risk reduction while progressing on to basic hands-on defense training. http://www.utexas.edu/police/rad/ ANDREWS DORMITORY, 2401 Whitis Ave Sexual Assault: A UT student reported her now ex-boyfriend had taken advantage of her on several occasions when she was unable to provide conscious consent as a result of her having been under the influence of medication. Reported on 9-03-10. Crime Prevention Tip: With most reported sexual assaults, drugs or alcohol were used to help facilitate the assault. Nine times out of ten the survivor knows the person that committed the assault. Sad fact: estimates are that only one in ten sexual assaults are ever reported to the police department. With these overwhelming statistics many survivors feel helpless, but there are a number of support groups and services available to survivors of sexual assault. BLANTON MUSEUM OF ART, 1900 Speedway Criminal Trespass Warning: A non-UT subject was observed digging through the trashcans and looking into parked vehicles on the lower level of the Brazos Parking Garage. During the investigation, the subject was located on the east side of the BMA. The subject was issued a written Criminal Trespass Warning and was escorted from the campus area. Occurred on: 9-04-10, at 5:11 PM. BRACKENRIDGE APARTMENTS, 3350 Lake Austin Blvd. Aggravated Assault (Family Violence): UT Police Officers responded to a reported assault. During the investigation, the officers learned the suspect, a UT student, had caused serious injury to his non-UT wife. Occurred on: 9-06-10, at 5:33 PM. BRACKENRIDGE DORMITORY, 207 East 21st Street Assault by Contact: A UT student reported another UT student touched her several times in a manner she found offensive. The victim told the suspect to stop and to leave her dormitory room. The subject refused until she agreed to meet him the next day for lunch. Occurred on: 9-04-10, at 9:38 PM. CREEKSIDE HALL DORMITORY, 2501 San Jacinto Blvd. Theft: A black Cat Eye bicycle light was stolen after being left mounted to the handlebars. Loss value: $25.00. Occurred on: 9-03-10, between 7:00 PM and 10:00 PM. ENGINEERING SCIENCE BUILLDING, 2501 Speedway Criminal Trespass Warning: A non-UT subject was discovered sleeping inside a restricted area of the building. The officers issued the subject a written Criminal Trespass Warning and escorted her from the area. Occurred on: 9-04-10, at 12:18 AM. GREGORY GYM, 2101 Speedway Theft: A Jansport backpack containing a Blackberry Pearl, several credit cards and personal identification were stolen from a locker located inside the women’s locker room. Loss value: $320.00. Occurred on: 9-06-10 between 7:00 PM and 8:00 PM. GREGORY GYM, 2101 Speedway Theft of Service / Criminal Trespass Warning: A UT staff member observed a non-UT subject enter into the café area and jump over a retaining wall to enter into the gym area without purchasing a day pass. During the investigation, the officers located the subject and escorted him from the area. The subject informed the officers that he had dropped all of his fall classes and was waiting until after the holiday to re-register for classes. The subject was given a verbal Criminal Trespass Warning prior to him leaving the area. Occurred on: 9-05-10 at 10:03 PM. HOGG MEMORIAL AUDITORIUM, 2300 Whitis Ave Theft: An Apple iPhone was stolen from within Hogg Memorial Auditorium after being left back of stage. Loss value: $100.00. Occurred on: 9-03-10, between 5:00 PM and 5:30 PM. INTRAMURAL FIELDS, 4901 GUADALUPE Burglary of Motor Vehicle: A non-UT subject discovered the left rear window of his Mitsubishi broken out and his wallet, credit cards, personal identification, $30.00 in cash and a pair of Ray Bans had been stolen. Loss value: $60.00. Occurred on: 9-04-10, between 4:00 PM and 5:00 PM. LIVING LEARNING CENTER, 2610 Whitis Ave Theft: A yellow and silver colored Trek mountain bicycle was stolen from the bike racks located on the east side of the complex. Loss value: $200.00. Occurred on: 9-06-10, at 4:00 PM. LIVING LEARNING CENTER, 2610 Whitis Ave Theft / Burglary of Habitation / Fraud: A UT student was notified that she had left her dorm room key in the lock. She quickly returned to her room and discovered her credit card and personal identification had been removed from her closed purse. During the investigation, the officer learned an unauthorized charge had already been made on her stolen credit card. Loss value: $50.00. Reported on: 9-05-10, at 5:04 PM. MAIN BUILDING, #1 South Mall Assault by Contact: A UT staff member reported an unknown female shoved her as she was walking out of the women’s restroom. The unknown subject then began screaming at her incoherently. When informed the police had been notified, the unknown subject left the area quickly. The officers searched the area and were unable to locate the unknown subject. The unknown subject was described as: White female, 50-60 years of age, long brown and grey hair that was unwashed, 5’-04” tall. She was last seen wearing a cream colored shirt and denim skirt. Occurred on: 9-05-10, at 9:59 PM. SAN JACINTO RESIDENCE HALL, 309 East 21st Street Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor: A UT staff member reported a UT student had been attempting to gain entry into the building for over 10 minutes while swiping his State issued ID card. The officers located the subject passed out on a bench with his wallet still in his hand. The officers detected a moderate odor of alcohol on the subject’s breath and noted his eyes were bloodshot and watery. The officers learned the subject was under the legal age of 21. The subject was issued a court appearance citation for Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor and was released to his roommate. Occurred on: 9-04-10, at 12:32 AM. SUTTON HALL, 210 West 21st Street Criminal Trespass Warning: A non-UT subject was reported to have been bathing on the north side of the building. During the investigation, the officers located the subject as he was getting dressed. The subject was issued a written Criminal Trespass Warning and was escorted from the area. Occurred on: 9-04-10, at 2:18 PM. UNION BUILDING, #4 West Mall Theft: A red Lucky backpack containing a grey TI-82 calculator, day planner, and personal identification were stolen from inside an unsecured 3rd floor room while the victim had her back to the door. During the investigation, the student stated she has placed her backpack behind her chair. While studying she heard someone enter the room and stand directly behind her, but she never turned around to see who it was. As she was getting ready to leave, she reached behind the chair she was sitting into retrieve her backpack and discovered it was missing. Loss value: $50.00. Occurred on: 9-05-10 between, 9:30 PM and 9:45 PM. 300 BLOCK WEST 21st STREET Suspicious Activity / Criminal Trespass Warning: A UT Police Officer observed a non-UT subject sitting on a bicycle while looking at another bike. Several minutes later the officer saw the same subject attempting to ride away with both bicycles. During the investigation, the subject claimed that he had gotten too drunk the night before to safely ride his bike home. During a search of his backpack officers located several cutting tools, including a pair of bolt cutters. The subject claimed he used those tools at his job parking cars. The officers confiscated the bike and bolt cutters and issued the subject a written Criminal Trespass Warning. Occurred on: 9-04-10, at 7:45 AM. Crime Prevention Tip: This subject will be back. He is described as: Black male, 40 years of age, 5’-06”, 125 pounds. Report any suspicious activity to the UT Police Department at 512-471-4441. 500 BLOCK COLORADO Evading Arrest or Detention / Assault with Bodily Injury: A UT Police Officer responded to a fight at the intersection of 5th Street and Colorado. Both combatants were in the middle of the intersection fighting. One subject saw the officers approaching and took off running when told to stop. The subject was discovered hiding inside a small maintenance room. The subject was taken into custody for Evading Arrest or Detention and was transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 9-05-10, at 2:32 AM. 600 BLOCK COLORADO Evading Arrest or Detention / Disorderly Conduct- Fighting / Assault: Several subjects approached a UT Police Officer and pointed out a subject who had just assaulted a subject at a local 6th Street bar. The officer told the subject to stop, the subject turned, looked at the officer and started to run away. The officer released his K-9 unit. The suspect saw the police K-9 unit bearing down on him and decided to stop and lay on the ground before the dog arrived. The subject was taken into custody for Evading Arrest or Detention / Disorderly Conduct- Fighting and was transported to Central Booking. Assault charges are pending because the victim left the area after being assaulted. Occurred on: 9-05-10, at 3:15 AM. CAMPUS WIDE: Non-Criminal Calls: In addition to the above criminal cases, the University of Texas Police Department responded to 66 Alarm Calls, 1 Call Box Activations, 2 Welfare Concerns, 3 Suspicious Activity Reports, 2 Suspicious Odor Reports, 8 Public Assists, 2 Collision Reports and 11 Unsecured Door Reports between 09/04/10 and 09/07/10.
