Campus Watch: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department between Thursday, 09-09-10 and Friday, 09-10-10. * * * * ADMINISTRATIVE MESSAGE * * * * You are cordially invited to attend The University of Texas at Austin Police Department’s Citizen Police Academy. The Citizen Police Academy is a course designed to give the public a better understanding of the Police Department. The goal of the Academy is to increase rapport between the Police Department and our community by providing citizens with enough information to dispel any suspicions or misconceptions they may have about the police. The Citizen Police Academy begins on Monday, October 4, 2010, and continues every Monday night from 6:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. for seven weeks concluding on November 15, 20010. Attendance at six of the seven nights is required for graduation. Applicants are subject to criminal background check. If you are interested in attending the Citizen Police Academy please complete the attached application and email Captain Don Verett at don.verett@austin.utexas.edu. The deadline to apply is September 29, 2010 and class size is limited. Robert E. Dahlstrom Chief of Police ****New Program**** Safe Strides The University of Texas Police Department has unveiling a new program called Safe Strides. Safe Strides is designed as a walking tour where you will learn simple tips and procedures to help keep you safe while striding across campus. GARRISON HALL, #3 East Mall Theft: A black backpack containing an Apple laptop computer was stolen from and unsecured ground level classroom after it was left unattended for several hours. Loss value: $900.00. Occurred on: 9-09-10, between 3:00 PM and 7:00 PM. GOLDSMITH HALL, #5 West Mall Theft: A silver Specialized mountain bicycle was stolen from the bike rack located on the north side of the building after being secured with a self-locking cable lock. Loss value: $250.00. Occurred on: 9-09-10, between 7:45 AM and 8:45 PM. JOHN HARGIS HALL, 1811 Red River Theft: A Apple 4G cellular telephone was stolen from an unsecured 2nd floor office after the property was left unattended. Loss value:: $300.00. Occurred on: 9-09-10, between 12:01 PM and 12:30 PM. WELCH HALL, 105 East 24th Street Theft: A blue Samsung cellular telephone was stolen after being left unattended inside a first floor classroom. Loss value: $100.00. Occurred on: 9-09-10, between 12:50 PM and 1:10 PM. 300 BLOCK WEST 21st STREET Suspicious Person: A UT student reported she was walking to Mezes Hall, from Dobie, when she realized she was being followed by an unknown subject. The subject followed her into Mezes and asked her if she was dating. The subject left the area when he learned she was dating. The unknown subject was described as: Middle Eastern male, late 20’s, with dark skin. Occurred on: 9-09-10, at 7:45 AM. 1500 BLOCK TRINITY AVE Public Intoxication: A UT Police Officer observed two UT students staggering back and forth missing their navigational beacons. One student’s balance was so impaired he appeared to be walking a tightrope while bent over. Both students informed the officers that they had been to a local downtown establishment and had consumed approximately 6 shots and several beers. Both subjects were taken into custody for Public Intoxication and were transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 9-10-10, at 2:26 AM. 1900 BLOCK UNIVERSITY AVE Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor: A UT Police Officer observed several passengers inside a vehicle sitting on each other’s laps as the vehicle was travelling west on 21st Street. The officer noted none of the passengers were wearing seat belts. During the traffic investigation, the officer detected a moderate odor of alcohol of the breaths of both passengers. As the investigation continued, the officer learned both students were under the legal age of 21 and had been consuming alcohol. Both students were issued field release citations for Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor. Occurred on: 9-10-10, at 3:25 AM. CAMPUS WIDE: Non-Criminal Calls: In addition to the above criminal cases, the University of Texas Police Department responded to 21 Alarm Calls, 3 Suspicious Person Calls, 1 Call Box Alarm, 1 Public Assist request, 1 EMS call, and 1 Unsecured Door Report between 09/09/10 and 09/10/10.
