Campus Watch: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department between Friday, 09-10-10 and Monday, 9-13-10. * * * * ADMINISTRATIVE MESSAGE * * * * You are cordially invited to attend The University of Texas at Austin Police Department’s Citizen Police Academy. The Citizen Police Academy is a course designed to give the public a better understanding of the Police Department. The goal of the Academy is to increase rapport between the Police Department and our community by providing citizens with enough information to dispel any suspicions or misconceptions they may have about the police. The Citizen Police Academy begins on Monday, October 4, 2010, and continues every Monday night from 6:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. for seven weeks concluding on November 15, 20010. Attendance at six of the seven nights is required for graduation. Applicants are subject to criminal background check. If you are interested in attending the Citizen Police Academy please complete the attached application and email Captain Don Verett at don.verett@austin.utexas.edu. The deadline to apply is September 29, 2010 and class size is limited. Robert E. Dahlstrom Chief of Police ****New Program**** Safe Strides The University of Texas Police Department has unveiled a new program called Safe Strides. Safe Strides is designed as a walking educational program in which you will learn simple tips and procedures to help keep you safe while striding across campus. The next Safe Strides program is slated for this Wednesday. ALMETRIS-DUREN HALL, 2624 Whitis Ave Graffiti: A UT Police Officer discovered an unknown subject had used a black ink pen to inscribe a word on the Police Emergency callbox located on the east side of the building. Est. repair: $20.00. Discovered on: 9-12-10, at 5:07 PM. BELMONT HALL, 2109 San Jacinto Blvd. Harassment: A UT student reported receiving several harassing and annoying telephone calls from an unknown subject. The student stated the calls began in late August 2010, she had received several annoying calls every few days. The caller is described as a male with a childish sounding voice. Occurred between: 8-27-10 and 9-10-10. BRACKENRIDGE DORMITORY, 207 East 21st Street Suspicious Person: A UT student reported an unknown subject had followed her to Brackenridge Dormitory. The unknown subject was driving a white Hyundai style car. The unknown subject was described as: Middle Eastern male, wearing a pink shirt and green framed glasses. Occurred on: 9-12-10, at 12:22 AM. DKR TEXAS MEMORIAL STADIUM, 405 East 21st Street Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor / Possession of a Counterfeit Driver’s License: A UT student was observed taking a bottle of water from a club after being told he could not enter into the stadium with the bottle. During the investigation, the officer located the subject and requested his ID or Driver’s License. The subject handed the officer his wallet and informed the officer that his ID was in it. The officer located the subject’s Driver’s License along with two counterfeit DLs. The fake licenses were confiscated. During the investigation, the officer detected a moderate odor of alcohol on the subject’s breath and with his correct Driver’s License determined the student was under the legal age of 21. The student was issued a field release citation for Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor and was escorted from the stadium. Occurred on: 9-11-10, at 8:55 PM. DKR TEXAS MEMORIAL STADIUM, 405 East 21st Street Possession of Alcohol by a Minor / Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor / Failure to Identify / Fraudulent Use of Identification: A UT Police Officer observed a UT student carrying a flask inside his pocket. During the investigation, the subject handed the officer a State issued Texas Driver’s License that belonged to someone else. As the subject was being escorted from the area, the officer detected a moderate odor of alcohol on the subject’s breath. The subject was issued a field release citation for Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor and released. Occurred on: 9-11-10, at 6:20 PM. DKR TEXAS MEMORIAL STADIUM, 405 East 21st Street Theft: A non-UT subject discovered two individuals were sitting in their assigned seats during the home opener for the Texas football season. During the investigation, the officer learned the season ticket holder had not received her purchase and had to have her tickets re-printed. One of the individuals stated he had purchased two tickets from an on-line vendor and had met the vendor at a tailgate party. Loss value: $140.00. Occurred on: 9-11-10, at 6:00 PM. DKR TEXAS MEMORIAL STADIUM, 405 East 21st Street Possession of Marijuana: A UT Police Officer observed a UT student approach an entrance gate to enter into the stadium. The subject was sweating heavily and was having a hard time following directions. The officer noted the subject’s eyes were glazed over. The officer asked the student if he was ok, and if he would mind showing him what was in his pockets. The student informed the officer that he did not have any money on him and asked if it were ok of he could go get some, then come back to be searched. The student removed a clear plastic baggie that contained a green leafy substance that the officer recognized as marijuana. The marijuana was confiscated and the student was issued a field release citation for Possession of Marijuana. Occurred on: 9-11-10, at 6:40 PM. DKR TEXAS MEMORIAL STADIUM, 405 East 21st Street Possession of Alcohol by a Minor: A UT Police Officer observed a UT student attempting to conceal a flask in the side cargo compartment of his shorts. The officer discovered the flask contained a clear liquid that was identified as rum. The officer then learned the student was under the legal age of 21. The subject was issued a field release citation for Possession of Alcohol by a Minor. Occurred on: 9-11-10, at 6:14 PM. DKR TEXAS MEMORIAL STADIUM, 405 East 21st Street Public Intoxication / Failure to Identify / Possession of Alcohol by a Minor: A UT Police Officer observed a UT student staggering and swaying back and forth as he attempted to enter into the stadium. The subject was also attempting to conceal two flasks in his front pockets of his pants. The student presented to the officer a counterfeit Texas Driver’s License that was not issued to anyone. The subject was taken into custody for Public intoxication and Failure to Identify. The subject was transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 9-11-10, at 6:14 PM. JESTER WEST DORMITORY, 201 East 21st Street Theft: A blue and silver Schwinn mountain bicycle was stolen from the bike racks located on the south side of the building after being secured with a self-locking cable lock. Loss value: $150.00. Occurred between: 9-8-10 and 9-10-10. PETER T FLAWN ACADEMIC CENTER, #2 West Mall Assist Outside Agency: A UT student reported she had been assaulted at an off- campus location. The Austin Police Department was notified and took over the case. Reported on: 9-12-10, at 3:34 AM. SAN JACINTO PARKING GARAGE, 2401 San Jacinto Blvd. Burglary of Motor Vehicle: A non-UT subject reported his gym bag containing boxing gloves, boxing head gear, shorts, along with a high school class ring and a Tom Tom navigational system were stolen from an unsecured red Dodge truck. Loss value: $340.00. Occurred on: 9-10-10, between 9:00 AM and 6:00 PM. SAN JACINTO RESIDENCE HALL, 309 East 21st Street Theft: A blue and white Giant mountain bicycle was stolen from the bike rack located on the northwest side of the dormitory. The officer learned the subject had used a U-shaped lock to secure the front tire of the bike to the bike rack. The tire was still secured to the rack. Loss value: $500.00. Occurred between: 9-07-10 and 9-11-10. UNIVERSITY TEACHING CENTER, 105 West 21st Street Criminal Mischief: A UT staff member discovered a 12-16 inch crack in the front panel of a Coke machine. During the investigation, it appeared an unknown subject had kicked the machine, near the dispenser. Est. repair: Unknown at this time. Discovered on: 9-13-10 at 1:23 AM. WEST MALL, 2300 BLOCK Guadalupe Criminal Mischief: A UT Police Officer discovered several stickers, advertising the release of a new movie had been affixed to several objects located on the West Mall. Repair value: $10.00. Discovered on: 9-11-10, at 10:28 AM. 1900 BLOCK SAN JACINTO BLVD. Driving While Intoxicated: A UT Police Officer discovered a tan colored Honda parked in two parking spaces and the driver was slumped over the steering wheel. As the officer was turning around, the non-UT driver attempted to drive away. During the traffic investigation, the officer detected a moderate odor of alcohol on the driver’s breath. The non-UT driver admitted to having consumed only one beer the entire night. The officers administered the Standardized Field Sobriety tests. The driver displayed several clues that indicated he was intoxicated. The subject was taken into custody for Driving While Intoxicated and was transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 9-11-10, at 3:33 AM. 2200 BLOCK INNER CAMPUS DRIVE Public Intoxication: A UT student was observed swaying back and forth, staggering as she attempted to fight the effects of Earth’s gravity. The officer saw that the subject had already lost that battle from the amount of dirt that was on her clothes and the skinned up knees and arms. The subject also appeared to be talking on her cellular telephone. During the investigation, the officer detected a very strong odor of alcohol on the student’s breath and noted she had been talking on a cell phone that was turned off. The student was taken into custody for Public Intoxication and was transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 9-11-10, at 1:04 AM. 2400 BLOCK WHITIS AVE Assault with Bodily Injury (Family Violence) / Public Intoxication: A UT student notified UTPD that he had witnessed a non-UT male assault a non-UT female and that the assault was continuing. Upon the arrival of the officers, the officers learned the female and the male had gotten into an argument, and that the male had ordered the female out of his vehicle. Once outside of the vehicle, the suspect continued arguing and the victim pushed him away. The suspect then shoved the victim to the ground causing injury and pain. As the investigation continued, the officers learned the suspect had seen the victim talking to another male while at a local downtown establishment. The officers could detect a very strong odor of alcohol on the suspect’s breath. The suspect was taken into custody for Public Intoxication / Assault with Bodily Injury, since the victim and suspect were in a relationship, the charge was enhanced to Assault with Bodily Injury (Family Violence). Occurred on: 9-12-10, at 1:23 AM. CAMPUS WIDE: Non-Criminal Calls: In addition to the above criminal cases, the University of Texas Police Department responded to 72 Alarm Calls, 2 Fire Alarm Calls, 3 Suspicious Person Calls, 2 Suspicious Activity reports, 2 Call Box Alarms, 5 Public Assist requests, 3 EMS call, 4 Lighting Problem reports, and 9 Unsecured Door Report between 09/10/10 and 09/13/10.
