Campus Watch: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department between Monday, 9-13-10 and Tuesday, 09-14-10. ****New Program**** Safe Strides The University of Texas Police Department has unveiled a new program called Safe Strides. Safe Strides is designed as a walking educational program in which you will learn simple tips and procedures to help keep you safe while striding across campus. The next Safe Strides program is slated for this Wednesday. Contact the UT Police Department’s Crime Prevention Unit for more information or visit http://www.utexas.edu/police/safestrides/ to register. * * * * ADMINISTRATIVE MESSAGE * * * * You are cordially invited to attend The University of Texas at Austin Police Department’s Citizen Police Academy. The Citizen Police Academy is a course designed to give the public a better understanding of the Police Department. The goal of the Academy is to increase rapport between the Police Department and our community by providing citizens with enough information to dispel any suspicions or misconceptions they may have about the police. The Citizen Police Academy begins on Monday, October 4, 2010, and continues every Monday night from 6:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. for seven weeks concluding on November 15, 20010. Attendance at six of the seven nights is required for graduation. Applicants are subject to criminal background check. If you are interested in attending the Citizen Police Academy please complete the attached application and email Captain Don Verett at don.verett@austin.utexas.edu. The deadline to apply is September 29, 2010 and class size is limited. Robert E. Dahlstrom Chief of Police GREGORY GYM, 2101 Speedway Assist Outside Agency / Theft of Service / Criminal Trespass Warning: A UT staff member observed a non-UT subject enter into the building without purchasing a day guest pass. During the investigation, the officers located the subject on another floor. Officers soon discovered the subject had an outstanding Outside Agency arrest warrant for Running a Red Light. The subject was taken into custody and was transported to Central Booking. In addition to the law enforcement action taken, the subject was issued a written Criminal Trespass Warning. Charges for Theft of Service were not filed. Occurred on: 9-13-10, at 6:00 PM. MCCOMBS SCHOOL OF BUSINESS, 2110 Speedway Suspicious Persons: A UT staff member stated an unknown male entered into a restricted area and gained access to several UT computers. When asked for a valid UT ID the subject presented an expired Texas Driver’s License. The subject left the area when asked to but returned an hour later. Prior to this incident, another unknown subject had approached a UT student and asked the student to assist him in gaining access into the same 2nd floor computer lab. The unknown subject claimed he was a UT Alumni and needed access to research a job. The first unknown subject was described as: white male, 6’-0”, 200 pounds, 35 years of age, with a mustache. Subject was last seen wearing a red cap, green shirt, and blue jeans. The second subject was described as: Black male, 6’-02”, 150 pounds, and 25 years of age. Subject was last seen wearing blue jeans and an orange shirt. Occurred on: 9-13-10. SAN ANTONIO PARKING GARAGE, 2420 San Antonio Criminal Mischief: A UT staff member discovered an unknown subject had damaged her vehicle. During the investigation, the officer learned an unknown tool had been used to scratch along the passenger side of her vehicle. Est. damage: Unknown at this time. Discovered on: 9-09-10, at 4:30 PM. SAN ANTONIO PARKING GARAGE, 2420 San Antonio Criminal Trespass Warning: A non-UT subject was discovered in an established campsite between the northwest stairwell and the exterior wall of the garage. The subject was issued a written Criminal Trespass Warning and was escorted from the area. Occurred on: 9-13-10, at 5:55 AM. WINSHIP DRAMA BUILDING, 300 EAST 23RD Street Suspicious Person: A UT student reported a non-UT subject was jumping around while being loud as he entered into the auditorium. When approached by a staff member and asked for a valid UT ID the subject became confrontational. The staff member stated he detected a strong odor of alcohol on the subject’s breath. When the subject realized he was talking to a staff member he began to apologize for his behavior and left the building. The unknown subject was described as: White male, 40 years of age, 5’-11”, and 160 pounds. The subject was last seen wearing a white t-shirt, blue jeans and tennis shoes. He was carrying a green backpack. Occurred on: 9-13-10, at 12:43 PM. CAMPUS WIDE: Non-Criminal Calls: In addition to the above criminal cases, the University of Texas Police Department responded to 16 Alarm Calls, 1 Fire Alarm Call, 3 Suspicious Person Calls, 2 Suspicious Activity reports, 2 Call Box Alarms, 1 Public Assist request, 3 EMS call, and 1 Unsecured Door Report between 09/13/10 and 09/14/10.
