Campus Watch: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department between Tuesday, 09-14-10 and Wednesday, 09-15-10. ****New Program**** Safe Strides The University of Texas Police Department has unveiled a new program called Safe Strides. Safe Strides is designed as a walking educational program in which you will learn simple tips and procedures to help keep you safe while striding across campus. The next Safe Strides program is slated for tonight Contact the UT Police Department’s Crime Prevention Unit for more information or visit http://www.utexas.edu/police/safestrides/ to register. * * * * ADMINISTRATIVE MESSAGE * * * * You are cordially invited to attend The University of Texas at Austin Police Department’s Citizen Police Academy. The Citizen Police Academy is a course designed to give the public a better understanding of the Police Department. The goal of the Academy is to increase rapport between the Police Department and our community by providing citizens with enough information to dispel any suspicions or misconceptions they may have about the police. The Citizen Police Academy begins on Monday, October 4, 2010, and continues every Monday night from 6:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. for seven weeks concluding on November 15, 20010. Attendance at six of the seven nights is required for graduation. Applicants are subject to criminal background check. If you are interested in attending the Citizen Police Academy please complete the attached application and email Captain Don Verett at don.verett@austin.utexas.edu. The deadline to apply is September 29, 2010 and class size is limited. Robert E. Dahlstrom Chief of Police ENGINEERING SCIENCE BUILDING, 2501 Speedway Theft: A silver Novo laptop computer was reported stolen from inside an occupied 1st floor office. During the investigation, the officer learned the victim had placed the laptop inside a backpack, the backpack had been placed on a chair near the door. Loss value: $400.00. Occurred on: 9-14-10, between 1:42 PM and 2:45 PM. Crime Prevention Tip: This past summer, we launched a new program that allows students, staff, and faculty members to go on-line and register their property. In case the item is stolen, the victim can provide the officers with the make, model, and the serial number. Please take a minute of your time and register your valuable property. www.utexas.edu/police/property Hearst Building, 2504-C Whitis Ave. Theft: An Apple laptop computer was stolen from an unsecured 4th floor office after being left unattended. Loss value: $1,500.00. Occurred on: 9-14-10, between 2:30 PM and 5:25 PM. MOORE-HILL DORMITORY, 214 East 21st Street Theft: A UT student discovered a small black coin purse containing $90.00 in US currency had been removed from her top dresser drawer located inside her dorm room. Loss value: $91.00. Occurred between: 9-09-10 and 9-14-10. PERFORMING ARTS CENTER, 510 East 23rd Street Burglary of Motor Vehicle: A UT staff member discovered a backpack containing an Apple IPod, personal identification, a green purse, along with 30 CDs were stolen from an unsecured vehicle. Loss value: $500.00. Discovered on: 9-14-10, at 10:51 AM. PRATHER HALL DORMITORY, 305 East 21st Street Theft: A blue Schwinn mountain bicycle was stolen from the bike racks located on the west side of the dormitory after being secured with a self-locking cable lock. Loss value: $250.00. Occurred between: 9-13-10 and 9-14-10. ROBERT L. MOORE HALL, 2515 Speedway Theft: An Apple laptop computer was reported stolen from an unsecured 9th floor office. During the investigation, the officer learned the laptop computer had been secured to a desk with a thin self-locking cable lock. Loss value: $1,000.00. Occurred on 9-14-10, between 2:05 PM and 2:10 PM. WALTER WEBB HALL, 2500 Guadalupe Graffiti: A word written in black gel ink, measuring 6” X 15”, was discovered on an interior wall of the parking area. Est. Repair: $25.00. Discovered on: 9-15-10, at 4:00 AM. WALTER WEBB HALL, 2500 Guadalupe Criminal Trespass Warning (2 Counts): Two non-UT subjects had placed signs on the sidewalk asking passers-by for money. During the investigation, both subjects were issued written Criminal Trespass Warnings and were escorted from the area. Occurred on: 9-14-10, at 9:02 PM. 1900 BLOCK SAN JACINTO BLVD. Assist Outside Agency / Speeding: A UT student, driving a black Dodge sedan, was observed exceeding the posted speed limit. During the traffic investigation, the officer soon learned the student had an outstanding Outside Agency arrest warrant for another traffic offense. The subject was taken into custody for the outstanding Outside Agency arrest warrant and was transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 9-15-10, at 2:26 AM. CAMPUS WIDE: Non-Criminal Calls: In addition to the above criminal cases, the University of Texas Police Department responded to 27 Alarm Calls, 7 Fire Alarm Calls, 2 Suspicious Person Calls, 1 Public Assist request, 1 EMS call, and 3 Unsecured Door Report between 09/14/10 and 09/15/10.
