Campus Watch: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department between Friday, 09/17/10 and Monday, 09/20/10. ****Program Alert**** Next Week, The UT Counseling and Mental Health Center will be hosting a Suicide Prevention Week in which special events will be held every day of the week. Each event draws attention to this topic and what each of us can do to better understand this issue. Please see the attached advertisement regarding next week’s activities. ****Citizen’s Police Academy**** You are cordially invited to attend The University of Texas at Austin Police Department’s Citizen Police Academy. The Citizen Police Academy is a course designed to give the public a better understanding of the Police Department. The goal of the Academy is to increase rapport between the Police Department and our community by providing citizens with enough information to dispel any suspicions or misconceptions they may have about the police. The Citizen Police Academy begins on Monday, October 4, 2010, and continues every Monday night from 6:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. for seven weeks concluding on November 15, 20010. Attendance at six of the seven nights is required for graduation. Applicants are subject to criminal background check. If you are interested in attending the Citizen Police Academy please complete the attached application and email Captain Don Verett at don.verett@austin.utexas.edu. The deadline to apply is September 29, 2010 and class size is limited. Robert E. Dahlstrom Chief of Police BLANTON DORMITORY, 2500 University Ave. Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor: A UT staff member reported a UT student had created a “Splash Zone” inside the lobby of Blanton Dorm. When stopped the student refused to answer any questions the staff member had asked. While creating his “Splash Zone” the student had dropped his keys. The staff member took the keys and turned them in at the Carothers Desk and notified the police department. During the investigation, the officer met with the student when the student arrived to reclaim his keys. The officers detected a very strong odor of alcohol on the student’s breath and noted other signs of intoxication. The subject was issued a field release citation for Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor and was released at the scene. Occurred on: 9-19-10, at 2:18 AM. BURDINE HALL, 2505 University Ave Theft: A grey colored Gary Fisher mountain bicycle was stolen from the bike racks located on the south side of the building. Loss value: $50.00. Occurred on: 9-17-10, between 2:00 PM and 4:38 PM. JESTER WEST DORMITORY, 201 East 21st Street Suspicious Person: A UT student reported another UT student was knocking on his locked door. The reporting student opened his door to finding a UT student wearing his “boxers” around his ankles laying in a fetal position. The UT got up, and went to his room. During the investigation, the officers located the second student and learned he had not slept in several days. Occurred on: 9-17-10, at 2:04 AM. KINSOLVING DORMITORY, 2605 Whitis Ave. Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor: A UT student reported her roommate was very intoxicated and very upset due to an illness in her family. During the investigation, Austin EMS treated the subject at the scene and did not transport her for additional treatment. Occurred on: 9-19-10, at 1:34 AM. PARKING LOT 115, 1600 East 20th Street Burglary of Motor Vehicle: A black and red Panasonic in-dash CD player was removed from a Chevy truck after the dash board was ripped apart. During the investigation, the officer noted entry into the vehicle had been gained after the passenger side window had been broken out. Loss value: $200.00. Repair value: $150.00. Discovered on: 9-19-10, at 3:13 AM. WALTER WEBB HALL, 2500 Guadalupe Graffiti: A small animal drawn in gold gel ink was discovered on the east exterior wall of the building. Est. repair cost: $50.00. Discovered on: 9-19-10, at 11:38 PM. 1900 BLOCK JESTER CIRCLE DRIVE Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor / Providing Alcohol to a Minor / Assist Outside Agency: UT Police Officers responded to a report of several subjects drinking alcohol near the dormitory. During the investigation, the officers located five subjects standing or sitting near a silver truck. Officers observed several open bottles of beer underneath the vehicle and inside the passenger compartment. One subject was attempting to conceal a bottle of beer inside her skirt. As the investigation continued, the officers learned three non-UT subjects had driven to UT to meet some girls. While there they were approached by two UT students. One non-UT subject gave the students a beer, after they had asked for one. The non-UT subject was taken into custody for Providing Alcohol to a Minor. He was transported to Central Booking. The officer soon learned the subject had an outstanding Outside Agency arrest warrant. The same student who had attempted to conceal her beer with her skirt, was found to be under the legal age of 21. She was issued a field release citation for Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor and was released at the scene. Occurred on: 9-19-10, at 3:10 AM. Crime Prevention Tip: Providing alcohol to your under aged friends might seem like a good idea at the time, but that decision can cost you plenty in the long run. 2000 BLOCK SAN JACINTO BLVD Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor / Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol by a Minor / No Valid Driver’s License / Speeding: A non-UT subject was seen exceeding the posted speed limit. During the traffic investigation, the officer learned the non-UT subject was never issued a Driver’s License after being presented a State issued ID card. While talking to the driver, the officers detected a very strong odor of alcohol on the driver’s breath. The driver admitted he was coming from a party where he had consumed two beers. The subject was issued a field release citation for Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor and his vehicle was impounded since he did not possess a State issued Driver’s License. Occurred on: 9-18-10, at 3:58 AM. 2000 BLOCK SAN JACINTO BLVD Driving While Intoxicated (Open Container): A white Toyota SUV was observed committing several traffic violations, including gliding through an intersection. During the traffic investigation, the officer detected a very strong odor of alcohol on the driver’s breath. The officer noted the non-UT driver’s eyes were bloodshot and watery. The officer administered the Standardized Field Sobriety test to the driver. The driver displayed several clues that indicated he was intoxicated. During an inventory of his vehicle, officers discovered on open can of beer that was still cold to the touch. The subject was taken into custody for Driving While Intoxicated and was transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 9-18-10, at 3:14 AM. 2200 BLOCK GUADALUPE Assist Outside Agency: A non-UT subject stopped a UT Police Officer and asked to be escorted back to her apartment because she was fearful of her husband. During the investigation, the officer learned the subject was a victim of an Assault-Family Violence and notified the Austin Police Department. Occurred on: 9-19-10, at 2:13 AM. 2300 BLOCK SAN JACINTO BLVD. Theft / Criminal Trespass Warning (2 Counts): A UT Police Officer observed two non-UT subjects carrying two metal folding chairs. Both subjects dropped the folding chairs as the officer drove by them. Perceiving this as a “Clue”, both subjects were stopped. Both informed the officer that they had found the chairs in an intersection and were simply getting them out of the traffic lane. Both chairs had been marked with UT identifiers, “Clue number two”. Plus the officer had seen both subjects walking through several intersections with the chairs, their story did not make sense, “third clue”. The chairs were seized and both subjects were issued written Criminal Trespass Warnings. The case is still under investigation. Occurred on: 9-18-10, at 2:00 AM. CAMPUS WIDE: Non-Criminal Calls: In addition to the above criminal cases, the University of Texas Police Department responded to 46 Alarm Calls, 4 “Police Help” Call Box Activation, 3 Suspicious Activity Calls, 4 Medical Emergency Assist, 2 Welfare Concerns, 3 Suspicious Activity Reports and 9 Unsecured Doors between 09/17/10 and 09/20/10.
