Campus Watch: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department between Monday, 09/20/10 and Tuesday, 09/21/10. ****Program Alert**** Next Week, The UT Counseling and Mental Health Center will be hosting a Suicide Prevention Week in which special events will be held every day of the week. Each event draws attention to this topic and what each of us can do to better understand this issue. Please see the attached advertisement regarding next week’s activities. ****Citizen’s Police Academy**** You are cordially invited to attend The University of Texas at Austin Police Department’s Citizen Police Academy. The Citizen Police Academy is a course designed to give the public a better understanding of the Police Department. The goal of the Academy is to increase rapport between the Police Department and our community by providing citizens with enough information to dispel any suspicions or misconceptions they may have about the police. The Citizen Police Academy begins on Monday, October 4, 2010, and continues every Monday night from 6:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. for seven weeks concluding on November 15, 20010. Attendance at six of the seven nights is required for graduation. Applicants are subject to criminal background check. If you are interested in attending the Citizen Police Academy please complete the attached application and email Captain Don Verett at don.verett@austin.utexas.edu. The deadline to apply is September 29, 2010 and class size is limited. Robert E. Dahlstrom Chief of Police ALMETRIS-DUREN HALL, 2624 Whitis Ave. Theft: A black Kona bicycle was reported stolen from the bike racks located on the northeast portion of the building after being secured with a U-shaped lock. During the investigation, the officer learned the victim had located the U portion of his lock at the scene. Loss value: $555.00. Occurred between: 9-19-10 at 8:30 PM and 9-20-10 at 3:23 PM. ANIMAL RESOURCE CENTER, 2701 Speedway Graffiti: An amorphous creature along with a word were discovered spray painted on the north side of the building. Est. repair damage: $100.00. Discovered on: 9-20-10, at 8:40 PM. MOLECULAR BIOLOGY BUILDING, 2500 Speedway Theft: A white Diamondback mountain bicycle was stolen from the bike racks located on the east side of the building after being secured with a self-locking cable lock. During the investigation, the officer learned the victim had just purchased his bicycle and this was the first time he had ridden it to campus. Loss value: $350.00. Occurred on: 9-20-10, between 12:30 PM and 3:30 PM. UNIVERSITY ADMINISTRATIVE BUILDING, 1616 Guadalupe Criminal Trespass Warning: A UT staff member discovered a non-UT subject, rolled up inside a sheet, sleeping in an established campsite on the north side of the building. During the investigation, the officers observed an open 24-oz can of beer next to the subject. After being awoken, the subject explained she had been told not to go home if she planned on consuming any alcoholic beverages that night. She did, therefor and did not go home. The subject was issued a written Criminal Trespass Warning and was escorted from the area. Occurred on: 9-21-10, at 12:23 AM. WELCH HALL, 105 East 24th Street Criminal Trespass Warning: A UT staff member discovered a non-UT subject camping out on a bench located on the 2nd floor. Prior to the officers arrival, the subject entered the men’s restroom and began bathing inside the sink. During the investigation, the subject informed the officers that he was visiting from California and had fallen asleep while walking around campus. The subject was issued a written Criminal Trespass Warning and was escorted from the area while still awake. Occurred on: 9-20-10, at 11:44 PM. 700 BLOCK EAST DEAN KEETON Possession of Drug Paraphernalia: A UT Police Officer observed a white Toyota travelling east bound without it’s headlamps turned on. During the traffic investigation, the officer detected a moderate odor of burned marijuana inside the passenger compartment of the truck. The officer soon located a multi-colored glass pipe that contained burned marijuana residue. The pipe was inside the center console of the vehicle. Neither the driver nor the passenger admitted ownership of the pipe. The driver claimed the pipe had been left inside the vehicle after he had returned from a long road trip. Both the non-UT driver and the UT student passenger were issued field release citations for Possession of Drug Paraphernalia and where released at the scene. Occurred on: 9-20-10, at 10:00 PM. CAMPUS WIDE: Non-Criminal Calls: In addition to the above criminal cases, the University of Texas Police Department responded to 18 Alarm Calls, 2 Suspicious Activity Calls, 4 Medical Emergency Assist, 2 Welfare Concerns, and 3 Suspicious Activity Reports between 09/20/10 and 09/21/10.
