Campus Watch: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department between Wednesday, 09/22/10 and Thursday, 09/23/10. ****Citizen’s Police Academy**** You are cordially invited to attend The University of Texas at Austin Police Department’s Citizen Police Academy. The Citizen Police Academy is a course designed to give the public a better understanding of the Police Department. The goal of the Academy is to increase rapport between the Police Department and our community by providing citizens with enough information to dispel any suspicions or misconceptions they may have about the police. The Citizen Police Academy begins on Monday, October 4, 2010, and continues every Monday night from 6:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. for seven weeks concluding on November 15, 20010. Attendance at six of the seven nights is required for graduation. Applicants are subject to criminal background check. If you are interested in attending the Citizen Police Academy please complete the attached application and email Captain Don Verett at don.verett@austin.utexas.edu. The deadline to apply is September 29, 2010 and class size is limited. Robert E. Dahlstrom Chief of Police CHILD DEVELOPMENT CENTER, 2205 Comal Street Criminal Trespass Warning: A UT staff member became frightened after discovering a non-UT subject sleeping behind the dumpsters located on the south side of the building. During the investigation, the officers located the subject rolled up inside a blanket. The subject was issued a written Criminal Trespass Warning and was escorted from the area. Occurred on: 9-23-10, at 1:25 PM. JESTER WEST DORMITORY, 201 East 21st Street Burglary of Coin-Operated Machine: A UT staff member discovered a vending machine was not secure and that several rows of product were missing. Loss value: Unknown at this time. Discovered on: 9-23-10, at 12:44 AM. JESTER WEST DORMITORY, 201 East 21st Street Possession of Drug Paraphernalia: A UT student detected a strong odor of burning marijuana coming from a fist floor dormitorty room. Prior to the officers arriving, the staff member heard the sound of air freshener being strayed inside the room. During the investigation, the officers detected a very strong odor of burned marijuana once the door leading into the room opened. The two residences denied having smoked any illegal substance inside the room. In plain view the officers observed Zig Zag rolling papers on top of a desk. One of the students was issued a field release citation for Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. Occurred on: 9-23-10, at 1:04 AM. MAIN BUILDING, #1 South Mall Theft: A wallet containing $40.00 in cash, personal identification, a hotel key and several credit cards was stolen from inside a backpack that had been left unattended and unsecured inside the northwest corridor. Loss value: $43.00. Occurred on: 9-21-10, between 2:00 PM and 4:00 PM. SAN JACINTO RESIDENCE HALL, 309 East 21st Street Theft: A red wallet containing an out of state Driver’s License, credit cards and $30.00 in cash was stolen from inside a closed backpack that had been left unsecured. During the investigation, the officer learned the victim was in the area when her property was stolen. Loss value: $247.00. Occurred on: 9-22-10, between 4:00 PM and 4:05 PM. TEXAS SWIM CENTER, 1900 Red River Criminal Trespass Warning / Assist Outside Agency: A non-UT subject was observed walking through the building. When approached by staff members the subject fled the area. The officers searched the area and located the subject several blocks away. During the investigation, the subject informed the officers that he had been looking for a bathroom. Officers soon learned the subject had an outstanding Outside Agency arrest warrant for theft. The subject was taken into custody and was transported to Central Booking. In addition to the law enforcement action taken the subject was issued a written Criminal Trespass Warning for the area. Occurred on: 9-23-10, at 8:38 PM. 2500 BLOCK SAN JACINTO BLVD Possession of Marijuana (3 Counts) / Possession of Drug Paraphernalia (6 Counts): A UT Police Officer observed six UT students sitting around a picnic table. As the officer rode up on the students he detected a very strong odor of buring marijuana. One student was inhaling marijuana from a large black, brown and red bong just as the officer arrived. In plain view the officer saw a baggie containing marijuana and two additional pipes were on top of the table. Several of the students informed the officers that the marijuana and marijuana pipes belonged to a subject that was not present when they were caught. All six students were issued field release citations for Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. Three of the students were charged with Possession of Marijuana and issued field release citations. Occurred on: 9-23-10, at 12:58 AM. CAMPUS WIDE: Non-Criminal Calls: In addition to the above criminal cases, the University of Texas Police Department responded to 17 Alarm Calls, 2 Suspicious Activity Calls, 4 Medical Emergency Assist, 2 Welfare Concerns, and 3 Suspicious Activity Reports, and 1 Unsecured Door between 09/22/10 and 09/23/10.
