Campus Watch: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department between Friday, 09/24/10 and Monday, 09/27/10. ****Transportation Safety Letter**** Please see the attached letter pertaining to transportation safety on campus. This brief letter covers, pedestrian safety, bicycle safety and vehicle safety issues on the 40 Acres. ****Citizen’s Police Academy**** You are cordially invited to attend The University of Texas at Austin Police Department’s Citizen Police Academy. The Citizen Police Academy is a course designed to give the public a better understanding of the Police Department. The goal of the Academy is to increase rapport between the Police Department and our community by providing citizens with enough information to dispel any suspicions or misconceptions they may have about the police. The Citizen Police Academy begins on Monday, October 4, 2010, and continues every Monday night from 6:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. for seven weeks concluding on November 15, 20010. Attendance at six of the seven nights is required for graduation. Applicants are subject to criminal background check. If you are interested in attending the Citizen Police Academy please complete the attached application and email Captain Don Verett at don.verett@austin.utexas.edu. The deadline to apply is September 29, 2010 and class size is limited. Robert E. Dahlstrom Chief of Police CENTENNIAL PARK, 1600 Trinity Attempted Theft: A non-UT subject reported seeing two unknown subjects collapsing a pop-up tent located in the park. When the witness confronted the two subjects, one of the subjects threatened the witness with bodily harm. The witness watched as the two subjects collapsed the tent, carried it away and placed it in a portable human waste container. The two subjects returned to the park, collapsed a second tent and placed that one in the roadway before leaving the area. Both tents were recovered. The subjects were described as: a white male in his 30’s wearing a white shirt, blue jeans and a tan hat, and a white female in her 30’s with medium length hair and wearing a green shirt and blue jean shorts. Recovery value: $180.00. Reported on 09/25/10 at 4:57 am. DARRELL K ROYAL TEXAS MEMORIAL STADIUM, 405 East 23rd Street Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor (4 counts): A UT staff member reported a UT student, who was under the age of 21, had almost fallen on her near gate 8. The student and a friend of his, who was also a UT student that was under the age of 21, were stopped by the police. The two students admitted to having consumed alcoholic beverages at a tailgating party being hosted by a student organization. While officers were speaking with the two students, two more UT students, who were also under the age of 21, approached the officers to inquire about their friends. While making the inquiry, officers could detect an odor of alcohol coming from them as well. All four students were issued citations and escorted from the stadium. Occurred on 09/25/10 at 3:24 pm. DARRELL K ROYAL TEXAS MEMORIAL STADIUM, 405 East 23rd Street Criminal Trespass: A non-UT subject was ejected from the stadium after he entered the stadium with a can of beer. The subject was advised he was not allowed to return to the stadium and if he did he would be arrested for criminal trespass. The subject exited the stadium, walked around the area, and re-entered the stadium. The subject was then arrested for criminal trespass. Occurred on 09/25/10 at 2:30 pm. DARRELL K ROYAL TEXAS MEMORIAL STADIUM, 405 East 23rd Street Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor: A UT student, who was under the age of 21, was observed having a difficult time navigating the stairs in section 25. The student was found to have consumed alcoholic beverages. Occurred on 09/25/10 at 3:24 pm. DARRELL K ROYAL TEXAS MEMORIAL STADIUM, 405 East 23rd Street Public Intoxication: A UT student was observed staggering and swaying as she attempted to walk under the east grandstand of the stadium. The student had a difficult time producing her driver’s license and pronouncing her words. The student was found to be under the influence of an alcoholic beverage to the point she was found to be a danger to herself. Occurred on 09/25/10 at 4:11 pm. DARRELL K ROYAL TEXAS MEMORIAL STADIUM, 405 East 23rd Street Public Intoxication: A UT student was reported to event staff as being “drunk and unruly” in section 124. The Event Staff Member summoned assistance from the police. As the Event Staff Member and the Police Officer approached the reclined subject, the subject raised his glass and requested the Event Staff Member bring him water. The subject had difficulty speaking, standing, walking and maneuvering down the stairway. The student was found to be under the influence of an alcoholic beverage to the point he was deemed to be a danger to himself. Occurred on 09/25/10 at 4:15 pm. DARRELL K ROYAL TEXAS MEMORIAL STADIUM, 405 East 23rd Street Minor in Possession of Alcohol: A UT student, who was under the age of 21, was found attempting to conceal a flask containing an alcoholic beverage as a peace officer maintained a watchful eye at Gate 27. Occurred on 09/25/10 at 4:30 pm. DARRELL K ROYAL TEXAS MEMORIAL STADIUM, 405 East 23rd Street Assault: At the end of the game, a non-UT subject and several of his friends stood up in section 3 to cheer for the Longhorns. Another unknown patron took exception to this display of support and demanded the first subject sit down. After the game, the cheerful fan was approached by the not-so-cheerful fan who then proceeded to place his hands around the throat of the cheerful fan. People quickly separated the two. The assaulting fan left the area. That subject was described as a white male in his 20’s, 6’ tall, 200 pounds who “looked like a surfer dude.” Occurred on 09/25/10 at 5:45 pm. ENGINEERING SCIENCE BUILDING, 2501 Speedway Theft: An envelope containing a total of $1,500.00 in cash was stolen from an unsecured drawer located inside an unsecured 5th floor office. Loss value: $1,500.00. Occurred between 09/22/10 and 09/25/10 at 11:30 am. GREGORY GYMNASIUM, 2101 Speedway Theft: A black leather wallet, containing $50 in cash, two credit cards, a debit card and a driver’s license was stolen from an unsecured locker located in a 2nd floor locker room. Loss value: $65.00. Occurred on 09/22/10 between 2:30 pm and 3:40 pm. Reported on 09/24/10 at 2:38 pm. Crime Prevention Tip: First things first…lock your lockers. Secondly, in this case, the victim did not report the theft of the wallet when it occurred. Within an hour of the theft, two unauthorized charges were made on the credit cards at non-UT businesses. A police report was made with the Austin Police Department. Had the theft report been made as soon as the theft was discovered, the police officer would have recommended the credit cards be cancelled immediately, which would have prevented the unauthorized charges and may have aided in the apprehension of the thief. Report any crime to the police department without delay. KINSOLVING DORMITORY,2605 Whitis Minor in Possession of Alcohol / Possession of Marijuana / Possession of Drug Paraphernalia / Possession of Controlled Substance with Intent to Deliver: UT Police Officers were summoned to the odor of burning marijuana coming from a 4th floor dormitory room. The investigation that followed revealed the residents of the room were in possession of the following: four glass pipes with burned marijuana residue, marijuana, $70 in cash, sugar dosed with LSD, and a vial with liquid LSD. One of the two students advised she had the LSD so she could sell it to her friends. Occurred on 09/27/10 at 1:30 am. NURSING SCHOOL, 1710 Red River Criminal Trespass Warning: A non-UT subject was reported as sleeping on the southwest side of the building. The subject was issued a written criminal trespass warning citation. Occurred on 09/26/10 at 7:50 am. PARKING LOT 70, 2000 Robert Dedman Theft: A brown leather purse containing $15 in cash, various cosmetics, a credit card, a key ring and driver’s license was stolen when the purse was left on a table under a pop-up tent during a post-game tailgating party. During the time frame of the theft, an unknown subject crashed the party and was hanging around the area. That subject was described as a white male, medium build, clean shaven, wearing a burnt orange t-shirt, green camouflage shorts, a black baseball cap. The subject reportedly had a tattoo of a flame and a confederate flag on his forearm. The subject was seen carrying a “man satchel” and a purple cup. Loss value: $90.00. Occurred on 09/25/10 between 4:00 pm and 6:00 pm. PARKING LOT 80, 1900 Red River Assault by Contact: A non-UT subject reported being pushed by a person from another tailgating party. The subject advised the two tailgating parties had been arguing all day over the location of who had the right to set-up their parties. The subject did not wish to file charges. Occurred on 09/25/10 at 6:10 pm. PARKING LOT 108, 1500 Red River Burglary of Motor Vehicle / Assault with Bodily Injury: A UT staff member approached his parked car to discover a non-UT subject leaping from the vehicle. Without notice, the non-UT subject struck the UT staff member in the face with his fist. The UT staff member and a coworker restrained the subject. When the police arrived, the non-UT subject was found to be in possession of several items that did not belong to him; including items that were stolen from the staff member’s vehicle. Recovery value: $700.00. Occurred on 09/27/10 at 2:01 am. SAN ANTONIO PARKING GARAGE, 2420 San Antonio Criminal Trespass Warning (2 counts) / Assist Outside Agency: Two non-UT subjects were found sitting in the southeast stairwell drinking beer. One of the two subjects was found to have three outstanding outside agency arrest warrants for public intoxication and two traffic violations. In addition to other law enforcement action taken, both subjects were issued criminal trespass warnings. Occurred on 09/26/10 at 12:36 am. SAN JACINTO RESIDENCE HALL, 309 East 21st Street Graffiti: A black permanent marker was used to write on the elevator buttons and one wall of an elevator located in the south tower of the dormitory. Removal cost: $100.00. Discovered on 09/25.10 at 1:00 am. SAN JACINTO RESIDENCE HALL, 309 East 21st Street Public Intoxication: A non-UT subject was reported as having an involuntary physical reaction to the over-consumption of an alcoholic beverage while hovering over a dormitory lobby trashcan. The subject was found passed out while hugging the aforementioned trashcan. The subject was found to be under the influence of an alcoholic beverage to the point Austin-Travis County EMS needed to transport him to a local emergency room for the treatment of alcohol poisoning. Occurred on 09/25/10 at 2:29 am. WHITAKER FIELDS, 4900 Guadalupe Theft: An H&M backpack containing a textbook, a pair of glasses, a Blackberry Curve cell phone, a pair of jeans, a pair of Red Wing boots and a wallet with $19 in cash, a debit card, a credit card and various identification cards was stolen when the backpack was left on the sidelines of a football field as the owner played in a flag football tournament. Loss value: $480.00. Occurred on 09/24/10 between 3:15 pm and 5:30 pm. WHITAKER FIELDS, 4900 Guadalupe Criminal Mischief: The driver’s side window was broken out of a 1999 VW Passat while the vehicle was parked in the northwest corner of the north parking lot. No items were stolen from the vehicle. Repair cost: $200.00. Occurred on 09/24/10 between 7:30 pm and 10:00 pm. 300 West MLK Driving While Intoxicated: A UT student was observed having difficulty standing and walking while inside a convenience store located at Guadalupe Street and MLK. Before the officer could stop the subject, the subject was able to enter his vehicle and leave the parking lot. The student was stopped and found to be under the influence of an alcoholic beverage to the point he was deemed to have been driving while intoxicated. Occurred on 09/25/10 at 9:35 pm. 2000 Speedway Assist Outside Agency: A non-UT subject was observed relieving himself by the side of the roadway. The subject was found to have three outstanding outside agency arrest warrants for traffic offenses and one outstanding outside agency arrest warrant for Minor in Possession of Alcohol. Occurred on 09/26/10 at 2:53 am. 100 East 21st Street Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor: A UT student, who was under the age of 21, was observed staggering and swaying as he attempted to walk. The student stated he had not had much to drink, but later advised he had 6 or 7 cans of beer at a nearby student organization residence. Occurred on 09/24/10 at 1:40 am. 300 West 21st Street Public Intoxication: A non-UT subject was reported as sitting on the curb while relocating his last meal from his stomach to the front of his shirt. The subject was committed to this move as he continued such activity throughout the interview with the responding officer. The subject was found to be under the influence of an alcoholic beverage to the point he was deemed to have been a physical endangerment to himself. Occurred on 09/25/10 at 2:29 am. 300 West 24th Street Assault (Dating Violence): UT Police Officers responded to a call of two non-UT subjects physically fighting inside a silver colored Dodge Avenger that was stopped in the roadway. Upon arrival, officers discovered a pedestrian was trying to restrain both female subjects from assaulting one another. Officers took over for the pedestrian and when calm was restored to the inside of the vehicle, it was learned that both parties were involved in a dating relationship which resulted in the two arguing about that relationship. The fight began when one of the subjects used her closed fist to strike the other; causing pain to the other subject. Occurred on 09/24/10 at 4:06 pm. CAMPUS WIDE: Non-Criminal Calls: In addition to the above criminal cases, the University of Texas Police Department responded to 49 Alarm Calls, 3 “Police Help” Callbox Activations, 2 Fire Alarms, 1 Welfare Concern Report, 2 Light Malfunction Reports, 4 Public Assist Requests, 4 Suspicious Activity Calls, 6 Unsecured Door Reports, 1 Suspicious Odor Report, 2 Found Property Reports and 2 Non-Criminal Fires between 09/24/10 and 09/27/10. RAD Program For Women, Now Available (Classes are FREE) Advanced RAD Classes Being Held for RAD Class Graduates The RAD program is a 16-hour course of realistic self-defense tactics and techniques for women that cover assault prevention and risk reduction while progressing on to basic hands-on defense training. http://www.utexas.edu/police/rad/ Defensive Driving: Learn Defensive Driving from a UTPD Police Officer. UTPD generally schedules a Defensive Driving Class approximately once a month – based on need. If paying in cash, please bring the exact amount because change may not be available. You will also need to bring your driver's license.
