Campus Watch: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department between Monday, 09/27/10 and Wednesday, 09/29/10. * * * * * ADMINISTRATIVE MESSAGE * * * * * The University of Texas at Austin experienced a tragedy yesterday on campus. With any incident a great many things are learned. Many students, staff and faculty members received the emergency text messages / alerts / or heard alerts that were broadcasted over the Outdoor Campus Wide notification system that were sent out during the incident. This led to a great deal of cooperation with the UT community as the police officers worked their way through the buildings. The Citizen Police Academy is a course designed to give the public a better understanding of the Police Department. The goal of the Academy is to increase rapport between the Police Department and our community by providing citizens with enough information to dispel any suspicions or misconceptions they may have about the police. The Citizen Police Academy begins on Monday, October 4, 2010, and continues every Monday night from 6:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. for seven weeks concluding on November 15, 20010. Attendance at six of the seven nights is required for graduation. Applicants are subject to criminal background check. If you are interested in attending the Citizen Police Academy please complete the attached application and email Captain Don Verett at don.verett@austin.utexas.edu. The deadline to apply is September 29, 2010 and class size is limited. Robert E. Dahlstrom Chief of Police JESTER WEST DORMITORY, 201 East 21st Street Theft: A blue Trek hybrid mountain bicycle was stolen from the bike racks located on the southwest side of the building after being secured with a self-locking cable lock. Loss value: $600.00. Occurred between: 9-20-10 and 9-27-10. MOLECULAR BIOLOGY BUILDING, 2500 Speedway Burglary: A silver Apple MacBook Pro laptop computer was stolen from a first floor lab. During the investigation, the UT staff member had been able to log into his computer from his home on 9-22-10. When he attempted to log in again on 9-23-10 he was denied access. The staff member contacted a co-worker and learned his laptop computer was not at his desk. Loss value: $1,500.00. Occurred between: 9-22-10, at 8:00 PM and 9-23-10, at 11:00 AM. PERRY-CASTENEDA LIBRARY, 101 East 21st Street Theft: A black and pink colored wallet containing personal identification, $10.00 in cash, and a credit card was reported stolen. During the investigation, the officer learned the subject had kept her wallet in the side pocket of her backpack. Loss value: $11.00. Occurred on: 9-27-10 at 11:45 PM and 9-28-10 at 12:38 AM. UNIVERSITY TEACHING CENTER, 105 East 21st Street Criminal Trespass Warning: A non-UT subject became verbally abusive towards several officers after he had been seen leaving a controlled crime scene area. The subject informed the officers that he was unaware of the situation since he does not watch the news. The subject was issued a written Criminal Trespass Warning and was escorted from campus. Occurred on: 9-28-10, at 1:45 PM. 2300 BLOCK SAN JACINTO BLVD. Public Intoxication: A UT student reported a suspicious subject had approached her and informed her that he was a good guy with a good job. The student left the subject standing there after telling him she was leaving. A short time later, officers responded to another report of the same subject marking his terroritory while attempting to raise the water level in Waller Creek. During the investigation, the officers identified the subject as a UT student and detected a strong odor of alcohol on his breath. The subject appeared to be confused as to his location as well as the time of day. The subject was taken into custody for Public Intoxication and was transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 9-27-10 at 5:55 PM and 6:52 PM. CAMPUS WIDE: Non-Criminal Calls: In addition to the above criminal cases, the University of Texas Police Department responded to 26 Alarm Calls, 6 Suspicious Activity Calls, 1 Welfare Concern, and 3 Suspicious Activity Reports, and 5 Unsecured Door between 09/27/10 and 09/29/10.
