Report for 11/03/2010

Campus Watch: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department between Tuesday, 11/02/10 and Wednesday, 11/03/10. APPLIED COMPUTATIONAL ENGINEERING & SCIENCES, 201 East 24th Street Theft: A textbook was stolen when it was left on a shelf near the exit door of a 2nd floor men’s restroom while the owner was at the wash basins. The only other person inside the restroom during the timeframe of the theft was described as a white male in his mid 20’s, approximately 5’10” tall with long dark hair and wearing a black dress shirt and black “skinny” jeans. Loss value: $100.00. Occurred on 11/02/10 between 11:40 am and 11:45 am. Crime Prevention Tip: I have two tips for this entry. First and foremost, keeping your property with you means just that – keep it with you. Many believe if they are in the same room as their property, then their property will not be stolen. This case shows that to belief to be false. A theft takes just a few seconds to commit and many thieves do not care if you are in the room when they commit the theft. The second tip involves marking your property with your state issued driver’s license or identification card number. While the UT Police Department and UT dormitory front desk will loan you and engraver to mark your laptop, MP3 player, cell phone etc. We do not recommend you use an engraver to mark your textbook but you do need to mark your books. They are a hot item for thieves as they can be sold easily. You should write your state issued driver’s license number or ID card number on the same page in every textbook you own – say page 113. By doing this, your textbook can be readily identified at a book buy-back store. BUREAU of ECONOMIC GEOLOGY, 10100 Burnet Road Burglary of Coin Operated Machine: An unknown tool was used to pry the door open to a 1st floor women’s restroom feminine hygiene vending machine. Repair cost: $75.00. Loss value: $5.00. Discovered on 11/02/10 at 9:30 am. PERRY CASTANEDA LIBRARY, 101 East 21st Street Criminal Mischief: An unknown device was used to scratch a symbol into the bottom of a piece of public artwork that is located in the lobby of the library. Repair cost: Unknown at this time. Reported on 11/02/10 at 10:20 am. ROBERT A. WELCH HALL, 105 West 24th Street Theft: A Samsung cellular telephone was stolen when it was left on the floor inside a 2nd floor room. Loss value: $100.00. Occurred on 11/02/10 between 8:15 pm and 9:15 pm. J. NEILS THOMPSON COMMONS, 10100 Burnet Road Burglary of Coin Operated Machine: An unknown tool was used to pry the door open to a 1st floor women’s restroom feminine hygiene vending machine. Repair cost: $75.00. Loss value: $5.00. Discovered on 11/02/10 at 9:15 am. UNIVERSITY TEACHING CENTER, 105 West 21st Street Theft: A UT student reported seeing two subjects acting covertly before they grabbed a brown standing ashtray, threw the ashtray into a small black car and sped off toward Guadalupe Street. Loss value: $200.00. Occurred on 11/02/10 at 11:12 pm. General Observation: The Surgeon General has several warnings listed on the side of cigarette packs to include smoking causes lung cancer, heart disease, emphysema and may cause complications with pregnancy. Such warnings also include the statement that cigarette smoke contains carbon monoxide. I have never seen a warning that eludes to the fact cigarette smoke may lead to thievery…maybe it should. CAMPUS WIDE: Non-Criminal Calls: In addition to the above criminal cases, the University of Texas Police Department responded to 26 Alarm Calls, 1 Fire Alarm Report, 2 Malfunctioning Light Reports, 2 Welfare Concern Reports, 1 Medical Emergency Assist, 2 Suspicious Activity Reports, 1 Public Assist Request and 3 Unsecured Door Reports between 11/02/10 and 11/03/10.
