Report for 11/05/2010

Campus Watch: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department between Thursday, 11/04/10 and Friday, 11/05/10. CALHOUN HALL, #4 South Mall Theft: A silver colored Univega Cruiser bicycle was stolen while it was “secured” with a cable lock to a stairway handrail located on the east side of the building. Loss value: $75.00. Occurred on 11/04/10 between 10:30 am and 8:30 pm. Crime Prevention Tip: Did you ever wonder why I put the word “secured” inside quotation marks in bicycle theft entries? Allow me to explain myself, when it comes to bicycle security in Austin, Texas, cable locks are pieces of junk. They offer very little security or piece of mind. Any thief with a pair of wire cutters can defeat a cable lock in a matter of a minute or two. That being said, in a bike theft caper, I barley consider a bike connected to anything with a cable lock to be “Secured.” If you want to protect your bike and avoid the dreaded quotation marks, then use a quality u-lock to secure your bicycle. CONNALLY CENTER FOR JUSTICE, 726 East 25th Street Theft: A green Windsor Tourist bicycle was stolen while it was “secured” with a cable lock to the bicycle racks located on the north side of the building. Loss value: $350.00. Occurred on 11/04/10 between 10:30 am and 4:30 pm. Are you “Hungry for Justice?” If so, be observant of your surroundings and report suspicious or criminal activity to the UT Police Department as soon as you recognize it. If your report leads to the apprehension of a thief, UTPD will buy you a pizza of your choice and have it delivered to you when and where you want it. GREGORY GYMNASIUM, 2101 Speedway Criminal Trespass Warning: A non-UT subject, who was suspected in several recent thefts from the gym, was found inside the gymnasium. The subject was not in possession of any stolen items at the time. The subject was issued a written criminal trespass warning and escorted from the building. Occurred on 11/04/10 at 6:18 pm. JESSE H. JONES COMMUNICATION CENTER, 2504B Whitis Criminal Trespass Warning (3 Counts) / Assist Outside Agency: UT police officers responded to the building to investigate a fire alarm. During the investigation, a non-UT female subject was found on the first floor. The subject advised she was in the company of two other subjects on the 5th floor when one of the other two subjects poured a chemical on a toilet paper roll to see if the toilet paper would catch fire. The female subject became concerned a fire would start and ran to the first floor where she activated the building’s fire alarm. The female subject’s concerns were unfounded as no fire was started. The other two non-UT subjects were located in different places in and around the building. One of the two male subjects was found to have two outstanding outside agency arrest warrants for camping in a public place and blocking a sidewalk. In addition to other law enforcement action taken, all three subjects were issued written criminal trespass warnings. Occurred on 11/05/10 at 3:14 am. SAN JACINTO RESIDENCE HALL, 309 East 21st Street Arson: A UT staff member detected an odor of smoke on the west side of the dormitory. The staff member found a smoldering trashcan located on the west side of the dormitory. An unknown subject was standing by the trashcan. The staff member directed the subject to report the fire to the dormitory front desk while the staff member extinguished the fire with a fire extinguisher. Damage to the trashcan was minimal. Occurred on 11/04/10 at 11:45 pm. 2200 Robert Dedman Driving While Intoxicated: A non-UT subject was stopped for driving on the wrong side of the roadway while driving a blue 2009 Chevrolet Malibu. The subject was found to be under the influence of an alcoholic beverage to the point he was deemed to have been driving while intoxicated. Occurred on 11/05/10 at 1:36 am. 200 East 21st Street Criminal Mischief: An unknown object was used to mark the side of a Toyota Camry while the vehicle was parked on the side of the road. A witness observed a subject who had become upset that the owner of the Camry had parked in a space the subject had hoped to use. The witness did not see the subject approach or damage the Camry, but did state the subject began to yell as he drove away from the area. Repair cost: $500.00. Occurred on 11/03/10 between 5:30 pm and 9:30 pm. Reported on 11/04/10 at 5:35 pm.
