Campus Watch: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department between Friday, 11/05/10 and Monday, 11/08/10. ALUMNI CENTER, 2110 San Jacinto Blvd Theft: A blue LG Sentio cellular telephone with a touch screen was reported stolen from inside a closed purse after the purse was left unattended on a table. Loss value: $200.00. Occurred on: 11-06-10, between 11:00 PM and 11:30 PM. BRAZOS PARKING GARAGE, 200 East Martin Luther King Blvd. Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor: A UT Police Officer observed a non-UT high school student creating her own “Splash Zone” while having an extreme physical reaction to the over consumption of alcohol. The subject was being attended to by a UT student and two other non-UT subjects. During the investigation, the officers learned the subjects were in town visiting a student from Texas State and had gone to a UT fraternity party at 27th Street and Guadalupe. At the party the high school student had consumed several Jell-O shots as well as several glasses of “spiked” punch. Austin EMS treated the subject and transported her to a local area hospital. Occurred on: 11-07-10, at 1:32 AM. ENGINEERING SCIENCE BUILDING, 2501 Speedway Theft: A grey and yellow Trimble surveying computer was reported stolen after being left unattended on the west side of the ENS while the work crew ate lunch. Loss value: $40,000.00. Occurred on: 11-05-10, between 12:01 PM and 12:30 PM. INTRAMURAL FIELDS, 4901 Guadalupe Theft: A white Mazda Millenia was stolen from the west parking lot at IMF. During the investigation the officer learned the vehicle also contained several textbooks, Platinum necklace and cross, wallet, several credit cards, and personal identification. Loss value: $5,250.00. Occurred on: 11-06-10 between 9:00 AM and 2:30 PM. JESTER WEST DORMITORY, 201 East 21st Street Theft / Fraud: A UT student reported he had lost his wallet while at Jester. During the investigation the officer learned the student had not cancelled any of his credit cards, on a chance that his wallet would be turned in. On 11-05-10 the student was notified of several unauthorized charges made on his credit card for a total of $1,451.00 at several local Austin businesses. The student described his stolen wallet as: brown leather wallet containing personal identification, several credit cards and debit cards. Loss value: $20.00. Fraud loss: $1,451.00. Occurred on: 11-04-10. LIVING LEARNING CENTER, 2610 Whitis Ave Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor: A UT staff member reported a large group of subjects were in the Whitis Courtyard drinking alcohol and possibly smoking marijuana. As the staff member approached the group, all of the subjects ran away towards Guadalupe. Two subjects had to return to pick up a third subject who had fallen and could not get up by himself. The officers searched the area and could not locate them. A few hours later the staff member observed three of the subjects were back in the courtyard and notified the police. During the investigation, the officer detected a strong odor of alcohol on the breath of one of the students. The student admitted he had consumed some alcohol, but not on UT property. The student was under the legal age of 21 and was issued a court appearance citation for Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor. Occurred on: 11-06-10, at 1:15 AM. PARKING LOT 104, 1300 Block Martin Luther King Blvd Suspicious Person: Three UT students observed a white Ford with black tinted windows and a push bar stop near them. The driver got out of the vehicle and asked them what they were doing. When he learned the students had notified the police he asked if “They were coming here?” then got back into his car and drove away. The unknown subject was described as: White male, 25-30 years of age, average build, 5’-11” with short blond hair. The subject was last seen wearing dark colored clothing that resembled a police uniform. Occurred on: 11-07-10, at 2:30 AM. Crime Prevention Tip: There have been several reports on all of the local news stations of a subject impersonating a police officer in Travis and Williamson Counties. It is unknown if this was the case here, but it makes one stop and think for a minute. All three of these students did a great job in reporting the suspicious person when the officers arrived. J.J. PICKEL RESEARCH CENTER, 10,100 Burnet Road Theft: A UT staff member reported an unknown subject had attempted to steal a wallet from inside a 2nd floor office. During the investigation, the officer learned the victim had left her office to use the copy machine. Upon returning she encountered a subject walking out of her office carrying her wallet. Several students heard the confrontation and came to the assistance of the staff member. The unknown subject ran from the area. The unknown subject was described as: Black male, 6’-0”, 200 pounds, medium build, with a mustache. The subject was last seen wearing a red jacket and blue jeans. Occurred on: 11-05-10, at 2:20 PM. PRATHER DORMITORY, 305 East 21st Street Possession of Alcohol by a Minor / Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor: UT Police Officers responded to a first floor dormitory room on a report of an intoxicated subject who was having several extreme physical reactions to the over consumption of alcohol. Officers observed the evidence of these reactions on the student’s dorm room floor. During the investigation, the officers observed a 1.75 ml bottle of tequila on the floor next to a desk, the intoxicated student admitted ownership of the alcohol. During the investigation, the officers noted the student’s demeanor would alternate between calm, upset to crying. Austin EMS was notified and treated the subject at the scene. The officers issued the student a court appearance citation for Possession of Alcohol by a Minor and released him to his sober roommate. Occurred on: 11-07-10, at 3:48 AM. SAN ANTONIO PARKING GARAGE, 2420 San Antonio Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor: A UT Police Officer responded to the SAG on a report of two intoxicated students that were seen walking into the garage. The subjects were discovered passed out inside a parked vehicle. During the investigation the officer detected a very strong odor of alcohol on the breaths of both students. The officer soon learned one subject was over the age of 21, but the other student was under the legal age of 21. He issued the student a court appearance citation for Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor. Occurred on: 11-07-10, at 2:00 AM. SAN JACINTO RESIDENCE HALL, 309 East 21st Street Possession of Drug Paraphernalia: A UT staff member discovered a water bong sticking out from under a bed during a safety inspection of a 4th floor dormitory room. During the investigation, the officers located the “bong” and identified the owner. The UT student was issued a court appearance citation for Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. The “bong” was confiscated. Occurred on: 11-07-10, at 10:00 PM. WOOLDRIDGE HALL, 600 West 24th Street Theft: A silver Apple Macbook laptop as well as a 32 gig black and silver Apple IPod Touch was stolen from an unsecured ground floor office. During the investigation, the officer learned the UT staff member had left the area for 10 minutes to run an errand inside the building and had used a self-locking cable to secure her laptop to her work desk. Upon her return she discovered the cable lock had been cut and her property had been taken. The officer learned prior to the theft, the staff member had seen a suspicious person in the area. The subject was described as: Hispanic male, late 30’s. The subject was last seen wearing a grey polo shirt. Loss value: $1,150.00. Occurred on: 11-05-10, between 1:20 PM and 1:30 PM. Crime Prevention Tip: There are several things we can discuss with this case. The UT Police Department encourages you to report any and all suspicious activity or suspicious persons. Many times you are not aware your office or building is being “cased” to see how easy it is for the criminal to apply his or her trade. To make it harder on the thief, take a few minutes and register your property with the UT Police Department at www.utexas.udu/police/property This is a FREE on-line program that allows you to record the make, model, color and serial number for all of your personal property. 200 BLOCK WEST 6th STREET Assault on a Public Servant / Resisting Arrest / Public Intoxication: A UT Police Officer observed a non-UT subject standing / leaning against a vehicle. A short time later the officer saw the same subject laying across the hood of the same vehicle. When the officer was able to wake the non-UT subject up, the subject jumped off the hood of the vehicle and became very aggressive towards the officer. The officer noted the subject was displaying other signs of intoxication, other than being passed out. The subject informed the officer that he did not have to listen to him and was going to leave. The subject then grabbed the officer’s shirt and began fighting. The officers were able to take the subject into custody for Public Intoxication / Assault on a Public Servant / Resisting Arrest and transport him to Central Booking. Occurred on: 11-07-10, at 1:30 AM. 300 EAST 23rd STREET Assist Outside Agency: A UT Police Officer observed a grey colored Honda travelling at a high rate of speed. During the traffic investigation, the officer soon learned the non-UT driver had 6 outstanding Outside Agency arrest warrants for a variety of traffic offenses. The subject was taken into custody for the outstanding warrants and was transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 11-05-10, at 9:24 PM. 1800 BLOCK SAN JACINTO BLVD Driving While Intoxicated / Assist Outside Agency / Driving While License Invalid / Failed to Maintain Financial Responsibility / Speeding / Ran a Stop Sign: A UT Police Officer observed a green Toyota travelling at a high rate of speed run through a controlled intersection without stopping. During the traffic investigation the non-UT driver was unable to provide the officer with a copy of his insurance or present the officer with a valid driver’s license. While talking to the driver, the officer detected a moderate to strong odor of alcohol on the driver’s breath. The officer noted other signs of intoxication, bloodshot and watery eyes. The officer administered the Standardized Field Sobriety tests. The driver displayed several clues that indicated he was intoxicated. The subject was taken into custody for Driving While Intoxicated and was transported to Central Booking. Prior to the conclusion of the investigation, the officer learned the subject had an outstanding Outside Agency arrest warrant. Occurred on: 11-06-10, at 4:11 AM. 2100 BLOCK GUADALUPE Public Intoxication: A UT student was discovered passed out. Had it not been for the pre-planned location of a retaining wall, be subject would have been found lying on the sidewalk. During the investigation, the officer detected a very strong odor of alcohol on the subject’s breath. The student was confused as to his location and the time of the day. When asked who the president of the United States was, he looked at the officer asked, “Are you kidding, George W. Bush.” The officer learned the student had taken several shots of Everclear earlier in the evening. The subject was taken into custody for Public Intoxication and was transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 11-07-10, at 12:29 AM. 2400 BLOCK SAN JACINTO BLVD Driving While Intoxicated (Open Container): A UT Police Officer observed a black VW run through an intersection that was controlled with a stop sign. During the traffic investigation, the officer detected a very strong odor of alcohol inside the passenger compartment of the vehicle and on the non-UT driver’s breath. The officer observed an open container containing a brownish liquid sitting in the cup holder. The officer later identified the liquid as an alcoholic beverage.The officer continued to detect a very strong odor of alcohol on the driver’s breath after the driver stepped out of the vehicle. The driver claimed to have had only one drink early in the afternoon. The officer administered the Standardized Field Sobriety tests. The driver displayed several clues that indicated she was intoxicated. The driver was taken into custody for Driving While Intoxicated and was transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 11-07-10, at 3:11 AM. CAMPUS WIDE: Non-Criminal Calls: In addition to the above criminal cases, the University of Texas Police Department responded to 44 Alarm Calls, 2 “Police help” Call Box Activations, 2 Fire Alarm Activations, 1 Malfunctioning Light Report, 2 Medical Emergency Assist, 5 Suspicious Activity Report and 14 Unsecured Door Report between 11/05/10 and 11/08/10.
