Report for 01/25/2011

Campus Watch: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department between Monday, 01/24/11 and Tuesday, 01/25/11. ALMETRUS DUREN HALL, 2624 Whitis Ave Theft: A black Diamondback mountain bicycle was reported stolen from the bike racks located on the northeast side of the building after being secured with a self-locking cable lock. Loss value: $100.00. Occurred between: 1-17-11 and 1-24-11. CREEKSIDE RESIDENCE HALL, 2501 San Jacinto Blvd Theft: A UT staff member contacted the UT Police Department to report a UT student had registered a bicycle that had been reported stolen in 2009. The bicycle was identified as a grey Schwinn mountain bicycle. During the investigation, the officer learned the original owner had only notified Parking and Transportation that his bike had been stolen and did not make an official report with the police department. The owner was contacted and the police verified the bicycle had indeed been stolen. As the investigation moved forward, the police located the student that was currently in possession of the reported stolen Schwinn. The officers learned that the victim as well as the current UT student had purchased similar bicycles from the same store and had mistaken the store’s bar coding system as the serial number for the bicycle. Loss value: $200.00. Occurred: Spring Semester 2009. Reported on: 1-24-11. Crime Prevention Tip: Neither student did anything wrong in this theft case. The original owner had used a two-lock locking system to secure his property. The current student is also using a two-lock locking system. Neither student was aware the correct serial number had been stamped on the bottom of the bicycle between the pedals, but both had quickly located the bar code numbers. The serial numbers on most newer bicycles can be located on the sprocket or on the yoke. If you have questions in locating the serial numbers on your property contact the UT Police Department at 512-471-4441. JACKSON SCHOOL OF GEOLOGY, #10 East Mall Suspicious Person: A non-UT subject entered into a second floor office wanting to talk to a professor about an idea of digging a canal from the Mississippi River to Austin, then out to California and back to Nevada. The officer informed him that he needed to leave since no one was available to discuss his idea. The subject asked for directions to the LCRA and left the area. Occurred on: 1-24-11, at 11:01 AM. TEXAS SWIM CENTER, 1912 Red River Theft: A UT staff member reported an orange and white magnetic UT Seal sign stolen. During the investigation, the officers learned the magnetic sign had been left on a UIL vehicle while parked on the northwest side of the TSC. Loss value: $100.00. Occurred on: 1-24-11 between 10:30 AM and 11:00 AM. 200 BLOCK WEST 27th STREET Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor: A UT Police Officer observed a UT student and a non-UT subject engaged in what appeared to be an altercation. During the investigation, the officer detected a very strong odor of alcohol on the non-UT subject’s breath and learned the subject was under the legal age of 21. He admitted to the officer that he had consumed 5 to 6 beers just an hour before. The UT student informed the officer they were having a disagreement, but were not fighting. The officer issued the non-UT subject a field release citation for Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor. Occurred on: 1-25-11, at 1:32 AM. 2300 BLOCK SAN JACINTO BLVD Suspicious Activity: UT Police Officers responded to a report of a non-UT subject hugging and kissing trees, then making inappropriate comments to male students walking by. During the investigation, the subject denied making any comments, but stated she was hugging the trees.
