Campus Watch: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department between Tuesday, 01/25/11 and Wednesday, 01/26/11. ALMETRUS DUREN HALL, 2624 Whitis Ave Theft: A UT student reported her purple Schwinn mountain bicycle with blinking lights on the front and rear had been stolen from the bike racks located on the northeast side of the building after being secured with a self-locking cable lock. Loss value: $250.00. Occurred between: 1-24-11 and 1-25-11. ALMETRUS DUREN HALL, 2624 Whitis Ave Theft / Unlawful Use of a Criminal Instrument / Criminal Trespass Warning: While discovering her bicycle had been stolen a UT student observed a non-UT subject kneeling inside the bike rack attempting to saw off a cable lock that was securing a grey Trek mountain bicycle. The student notified the UT Police Department. The responding officers located the subject inside the northeast bike rack and observed the subject attempting to leave the area. During the investigation, the officers located the grey Trek and saw the lock had been damaged. Officers then recovered a pair of bolt cutters and pliers along with a cut lock from inside the subject’s backpack. The subject was taken into custody for Theft and Unlawful Use of a Criminal Instrument and was transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 1-25-11, at 8:00 PM. Crime Prevention Tip: All it took was a telephone call to the police. The University of Texas Police Department would like to commend this student for taking the time to report the suspicious activity she had observed inside the bike rack. Her actions prevented this thief from being successful and she had earned a Free Pizza of her choice from the UT Police Department. All it took was a telephone call. J.J. PICKEL RESEARCH CAMPUS, 10,100 Burnet Road Harassment: A UT staff member reported receiving several harassing and annoying telephone calls in which the unknown caller would leave the telephone line open and never say a word. During one of these phone calls, the staff member informed the caller that she was in the process of trapping the number, at that point she heard the caller uttered several four letter words and hung up the telephone. Occurred on: 1-15-11 at 9:22 AM. Crime Prevention Tip: *57 a number to remember for students, staff and faculty living on or off campus. When receiving harassing or annoying telephone calls you have the ability to trap the call. Simply hang up on the caller, pick up the receiver and dial *57. You will hear one of two messages, either the call was successfully trapped or the service was unable to trap the call. If you know the call was successfully trapped, inform the investigating officer. If you are living or working on campus, this is a free service offered to everyone. For those of us that live off campus, out telephone service providers offer this service at a small cost. Please check with your telephone provider for current prices of the *57 service. W. C. HOGG BUILDING, #2 East Mall Theft: A grey Trek mountain bicycle was reported stolen from the bike racks located on the east side of the building after being secured with a U-shaped lock. Loss value: $300.00. Occurred between: 12-18-10 and 1-25-11. WAGGENER HALL, 2210 Speedway Theft: An Apple iPhone was reported stolen after being left on top of a desk inside a first floor classroom. During the investigation, the officer learned the victim had placed the phone on the desk, covered it with a notebook, then turned to ask as question of the professor. When she turned back around her property was missing. Loss value: $600.00. Occurred on: 1-24-11, at 4:45 PM. CAMPUS WIDE: Non-Criminal Calls: In addition to the above criminal cases, the University of Texas Police Department responded to 13 Alarm Calls, 1 Malfunctioning Light, 2 welfare concerns, 1 EMS Call, and 6 Unsecured Door report between 01/25/11 and 01/26/11.
