Campus Watch: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department between Wednesday, 01/26/11 and Thursday, 01/27/11. ALMETRUS DUREN HALL, 2624 Whitis Ave Theft: A green Novara mountain bicycle was reported stolen from the bike racks located on the northeast side of the building after being secured with a U-shaped lock. Loss value: $100.00. Occurred between: 12-11-10 and 1-26-11. MOORE-HILL DORMITORY, 214 East 24th Street Harassment: A UT student reported receiving ten harassing and embarrassing text messages from an unknown subject. The student sent one text message to the unknown subject requesting they stop messaging. The student informed the officer that the messages continued to be sent. Reported on: 1-26-11, at 12:50 PM. NORMAN HACKERMAN BUILDING, 100 East 24th Street Criminal Mischief: A UT Police Officer observed two non-UT subjects skateboarding along the top of the limestone retaining wall located on the south side of the building. The officer discovered one of the limestone blocks had been damaged when the skateboards slid across the top. During the investigation, the officers issued both subjects field release citations for Criminal Mischief. Estimated damage: $50.00. Occurred on: 1-26-11, at 5:30 PM. 2500 BLOCK ROBERT DEDMAN Assist Outside Agency: A UT Police Officer observed a silver Saturn exceeding the posted speed limit. During the traffic investigation, the officer soon learned the non-UT subject had an outstanding Outside Agency arrest warrant for Theft. The subject was taken into custody and was transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 1-26-11, at 11:44 PM. Crime Prevention Tip: Since the beginning of the semester several RA’s at Jester and Kinsolving have requested various presentations that have included Star Cart (Tim, your guys were there), Shots Fired and several 2-hour women’s self defense classes. These presentations have been very well attended by the residences. Tonight we will be at San Jacinto Dormitory MPR room. Ladies we will be offering another 2-hour self defense class. CAMPUS WIDE: Non-Criminal Calls: In addition to the above criminal cases, the University of Texas Police Department responded to 13 Alarm Calls, 2 Malfunctioning Lights, 2 welfare concerns, 1 Vehicle Assist, and 3 Unsecured Door report between 01/26/11 and 01/27/11. Emergency Text Message Service The University of Texas at Austin and its police department are responsible for notifying faculty, staff, and students of emergency situations (e.g., inclement weather, building evacuations, campus closures, etc.). The University employs a wide variety of tools to make sure everyone on campus is informed during an emergency event—including text messaging. In order to accomplish emergency text messaging more effectively, the University is collecting cell phone numbers from members of our campus community. Effective August 26, 2009, this database of cell phone numbers will be used for emergency text messages. RAD Program For Women, Now Available (Classes are FREE) Advanced RAD Classes Being Held for RAD Class Graduates The RAD program is a 16-hour course of realistic self-defense tactics and techniques for women that cover assault prevention and risk reduction while progressing on to basic hands-on defense training. http://www.utexas.edu/police/rad/ Defensive Driving: Learn Defensive Driving from a UTPD Police Officer. UTPD generally schedules a Defensive Driving Class approximately once a month – based on need. The classes meet in the University Police Building, Room 1.318, located at 2201 Robert Dedman Dr (east of Memorial Stadium). The cost for the course is $25.00 (check or cash) payable on class date. If paying in cash, please bring the exact amount because change may not be available. You will also need to bring your driver's license. BCAL provides a central resource for UT faculty, students, and staff who may have concerns about the behavior or well-being of another member of the campus community. By calling BCAL at 512-232-5050, callers may talk with trained staff members who will assist the caller in exploring available options and strategies as well as referrals to appropriate campus support networks.
