Report for 02/10/2011

Campus Watch: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department between Wednesday, 02/09/11 and Thursday, 02/10/11. JESTER EAST DORMITORY, 203 East 21st Street Possession of Drug Paraphernalia: A UT staff member reported the odor of burning marijuana coming from a 4th floor dormitory room. The responding officers detected a moderate odor of burning marijuana coming from the same room upon their arrival. During the investigation, the officers identified the two students inside the room and noted both students had red bloodshot eyes. In plain view the officers noticed a paper towel roller that had been filled with dryer sheets. This device is commonly used in an attempt to mask the odor of burning marijuana. As you can tell, these types of devices really work… I think Not. The officers issued the students a field release citation for Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. The paper towel roller with the dry sheets inside was confiscated as evidence. Occurred on: 2-09-11, at 9:58 PM. Crime Prevention Tip: Many parents, as well as some students, have contacted me about the increase incidents of marijuana inside the dormitories. For the last few years the UT Police Department and the Division of Housing and Food Services have been conducting training sessions with all of the Resident Assistances to teach them how to identify the odor of burning marijuana. As many students have learned this year, it is not a good idea to smoke an illegal substance inside their dormitory because the cops will come knocking. JESTER WEST DORMITORY, 201 East 21st Street Theft of Service: A UT Police Officer witnessed a UT student walk up to the drink dispenser after removing a clear plastic cup. These clear plastic cups are reserved for water only. The officer observed the student fill the cup with blue PowerAde. Upon further investigation, the officer learned the student had not purchased any drink from the dining establishment. After committing the theft in front of the officer, the student was stopped. The student elected to pay the merchant instead of going to jail. Loss value: $1.00. Occurred on: 2-10-11, at 2:00 AM. Crime Prevention Tip: Courtesy cups are just as the name implies, a courtesy to allow a customer to obtain a cup of water. All other products must be purchased. MEZES HALL, #5 South Mall Theft: A silver 32 gig Apple IPod Touch was reported stolen after it was removed from a jacket pocket. During the investigation, the officer learned the staff member had placed his jacket on the back of a chair while he was removing property from the building to be taken to another location. Loss value: $300.00. Occurred on: 1-21-11, between 8:00 AM and 3:00 PM. PARKING LOT 114, 2200 Block Leona Burglary of Motor Vehicle: A UT Police Officer discovered the passenger side window of a red Mitsubishi broken and a hole in the center of the dashboard where the stereo system had once been. During the investigation, the officer learned an LCD AM/FM/DVD/CD player had been stolen from the vehicle. Loss value: Unknown at this time. Damage to the vehicle: $150.00.
