Report for 03/08/2011

Campus Watch: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department between Monday, 03/07/11 and Tuesday, 03/08/11. ***** ADMINISTRATIVE MESSAGE ***** We are 4 days out and counting before the beginning of Spring Break 2011. Beginning today we are going to address most of the safety concerns that are brought up during the school year and are magnified during this time of the year. South Padre Island, Port Aransas, Gulf Port and Dolphin Island these are only a few Spring Break locations on the minds of UT Students. The local police departments are gearing up with directed patrols and additional officers working the crowded beaches. They will be looking for underage drinking and other alcohol violations while you are in their jurisdiction. Yesterday, APD had requested the following information to be passed along to the UT students living in the West Campus and Riverside areas. These are areas of concern due to historical increases in property crimes during Spring Break. Many students could return home to find their apartments or vehicles broken into. Take a few minutes and remove all of your personal property from your vehicle: CDs, GPS, GPS mount, money and personal papers. These items attract thieves. Before walking away from your apartment, ensure all windows and doors are locked. If you have a friend staying in town ask them to check on your property. The UT Police Department encourages all students to register and engrave their property. You can go to www.utexas.edu/police/property to register your property on line. Engraving your property with your State issued driver’s license number makes it that much harder for a thief. GUADALUPE PARKING GARAGE, 1616 Guadalupe Burglary of Motor Vehicle: A UT student discovered the driver’s side window of her vehicle had been completely broken out. During an inventory of her vehicle, the student discovered her GPS system and dash mount had been stolen. Estimated Damage: $150.00. Loss value: $55.00. Occurred between: 3-07-11 at 8:00 PM and 3-08-11 at 1:18 AM. MAIN MALL Theft: A white Swanson beach cruiser was stolen after being secured to a pole with a chain bicycle lock. Loss value: $110.00. Occurred between: 3-04-11 and 3-07-11. PARKING LOT 103, 2100 Comal Theft / Possession of a Controlled Substance / Assist Outside Agency: A UT Police Officer observed a non-UT subject looking through an open driver’s door. The subject saw the officer and approached the officer asking for directions. The subject informed the officer that he and his travelling companion were taking a break. During the investigation, the officer learned the vehicle had been reported stolen out of Houston. The subject was taken into custody for Theft. During a search incidental to his arrest, the officers located a white pill in the subject’s pants pocket. The pill was later identified as Hydrocodone. The subject was transported to Central Booking. The passenger was unaware the vehicle had been stolen and was released at the scene after being issued a written Criminal Trespass Warning. Occurred on: 3-08-11, at 12:30 AM. SAN ANTONIO PARKING GARAGE, 2420 San Antonio Graffiti: A UT Police Officer discovered a word written in black spray paint on the north exterior wall of the parking garage. Estimated loss: $50.00.
