Report for 03/09/2011

Campus Watch: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department between Tuesday, 03/08/11 and Wednesday, 03/09/11. ***** ADMINISTRATIVE MESSAGE ***** We are 2 days out and counting before the beginning of Spring Break 2011. Beginning today we are going to address most of the safety concerns that are brought up during the school year and are magnified during this time of the year. South Padre Island, Port Aransas, Gulf Port and Dolphin Island are only a few Spring Break locations on the minds of UT Students. The local police departments are gearing up with directed patrols and additional officers working the crowded beaches. They will be looking for underage drinking and other alcohol violations while you are in their jurisdiction. Yesterday, APD had requested the following information to be passed along to the UT students living in the West Campus and Riverside areas. These are areas of concern due to historical increases in property crimes during Spring Break. Many students could return home to find their apartments or vehicles broken into. Take a few minutes and remove all of your personal property from your vehicle: CDs, GPS, GPS mount, money and personal papers. These items attract thieves. Before walking away from your apartment, ensure all windows and doors are locked. If you have a friend staying in town ask them to check on your property. The UT Police Department encourages all students to register and engrave their property. You can go to www.utexas.edu/police/property to register your property on line. Engraving your property with your State issued driver’s license number makes it that much harder for a thief. ACES BUILDING, 201 East 24th Street Theft: A Dell Inspiron laptop computer was reported stolen after being left unsecured inside a 2nd floor office. Loss value: $500.00. Occurred between: 3-05-11 and 3-07-11. CLARK FIELD, 300 East 21st Street Criminal Trespass: A non-UT subject approached an unknown subject’s property and began looking at it. When confronted, the subject asked the other person if he wanted to fight. During the investigation the officers located the subject sitting on the north end of the field. The subject informed the officers that he had been asking the students if they wanted to practice martial arts with him. The officer learned the subject had received a prior written Criminal Trespass Warning and took the subject into custody for Criminal Trespass. Occurred on: 3-08-11, at 1:26 PM. 200 BLOCK WEST 6th STREET Failure to Identify: A non-UT subject approached a UT Police Officer and informed the officer that she was being harassed by a group of males. The subject informed the officer that they had been harassing her based upon what she was wearing. The officer detected a very strong odor of alcohol on the subject’s breath and noted other signs of intoxication. After being taken into custody for Public Intoxication, a group of the subject’s friends arrived and took care, custody and control of the subject. At the onset of the investigation, while the subject was explaining her situation, a group of non-UT subjects had approached the female and attempted to pull her away from the officers. The officers intervened and prevented her from being pulled away. During this investigation, the primary suspect who had been pulling on the female informed the officers that he did not have any identification on him and provide the officers with two false dates of birth. The officers detected a very strong odor of alcohol on the subject’s breath and noted other signs of intoxication. The subject was taken into custody. During a search incidental to the arrest, officers located the subject’s state issued driver’s license inside his pants pocket. The subject was transported to Central Booking for Failure to Identify. Occurred on: 3-09-11, at 2:27 AM.
