Campus Watch: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department between Friday, 04/15/11 and Monday, 04/18/11. COLORADO APARTMENTS, 2501 Lake Austin Blvd Criminal Mischief: A UT student discovered an unknown subject had used an unknown tool to damage both the front and rear passenger side doors of his vehicle. Estimated repair value: $300.00. Discovered on: 4-16-11, at 11:00 AM. GOLDSMITH HALL, #5 West Mall Theft / Possession of drug Paraphernalia / Criminal Trespass Warning: The University of Texas Police Department received information a non-UT subject had removed a mountain bicycle from the bike racks located on the east side of Goldsmith Hall. During the investigation, the officers located the subject riding the bicycle. The subject informed the officers his intentions were to sell the bike to purchase Heroin. The subject was taken into custody for Theft. As the investigation continued, the officers discovered the subject was in possession of a syringe and a metal spoon with residue on it. The residue tested positive for Heroin. The subject was transported to Central Booking. In addition to the law enforcement actions taken, the subject was issued a written Criminal Trespass Warning. Occurred on: 4-16-11, at 11:49 PM. INTRAMURAL FIELDS, 4901 Guadalupe Burglary of Motor Vehicle: A UT student discovered the passenger side window of her vehicle broken out and her Coach purse containing credit cards, personal identification, and an IPod touch had been stolen from the front passenger seat. During the investigation, the officer learned the subject had been just a few yards away talking to a friend when she heard her car alarm going off. Loss value: $700.00. Occurred on: 4-17-11, between 3:50 PM and 4:00 PM. JESTER WEST DORMITORY, 201 East 21st Street Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor: A UT staff member reported a UT student was seen staggering into the building as she attempted to make her way to her dormitory room. During the investigation, the officers located the subject and detected a very strong odor of alcohol on her breath. According to the accounts of the night, the student had been involved in a number of different activities, but none of these activities included consuming adult beverages. The officers determined the student was under the legal age of 21 and issued her a court appearance citation for Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor and released her to a sober friend. Occurred on: 4-17-11, at 4:00 AM. JESTER WEST DORMITORY, 201 East 21st Street Assault by Threat: UT Police Officers responded to a report of two UT students involved in a verbal disturbance. During the investigation, the officers learned one room mate was upset that the other was keeping him awake at night. Both subjects got involved in a heated argument. One subject informed the officers he was having a bad day since he did not do well on an exam. Occurred on: 4-16-11, at 6:28 AM. PENICK-ALLISON TENNIS CENTER, 1701 Trinity Theft: A yellow Babalot tennis racket was reported stolen after being left unattended and unsecured during a match. Loss value: $199.00. Occurred on: 4-17-11, between 1:00 PM and 3:00 PM. ROBERTS DORMITORY, 303 East 21st Street Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor: A UT student was observed staggering between his navigational beacons. During the investigation, the officer detected a moderate odor of alcohol on the student’s breath and learned he was under the legal age of 21. The officer issued the subject a court appearance citation for Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor and released him to his sober roommate. Occurred on: 4-16-11, at 3:44 AM. SAN JACINTO RESIDENSE HALL, 309 East 21st Street Theft: A black Zoom mountain bicycle with red rims was reported stolen from the bike racks located on the southwest side of the building after being secured with a U-shaped lock and a self-locking cable lock. Loss value: $180.00. Occurred between: 4-14-11, at 11:00 AM and 4-15-11, at 12:30 PM. STUDENT SERVICES BUILDING, 100 West Dean Keeton Public Intoxication / Evading Arrest: A UT Police Officer observed a UT student staggering back and forth as he attempted to walk along a busy roadway. As the officer was exiting her patrol vehicle, the student looked at the officer then attempted to flee the area in a staggering run. The student ran towards a UT building and was surprised to find it secure. The student turned around and placed his hands in the air. The officer took the student into custody for Evading Arrest or Detention. The officer soon discovered the student had a very strong odor of alcohol on his breath and noted other signs of intoxication. The student was also charged with Public Intoxication and was transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 4-16-11, at 4:09 AM. THOMPSON CONFERENCE CENTER, 2405 Red River Theft: A Dell laptop computer was reported stolen after being left unattended inside the lobby area of the conference center. Loss value: $500.00. Occurred on: 4-14-11, at 9:30 PM. 200 BLOCK WEST 24th STREET Public Intoxication: A UT Police Officer observed a UT student staggering back and forth. The subject stumbled into two street sign poles and almost fell over backwards. During the investigation, the officer detected a very strong odor of alcohol on the student’s breath. The student informed the officer he had been to a local establishment and had consumed only 2 beers, he later changed the quantity to 5 beers, but insisted he was going to walk home. The student at this point was walking in the opposite direction from where he lived. The student was taken into custody for Public Intoxication and was transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 4-16-11, at 1:50 AM. 200 BLOCK WEST 7th STREET Driving While Intoxicated: A UT Police Officer observed a black Mitsubishi travelling the wrong way on a one-way street. During the traffic investigation, the officer noted the non-UT driver’s eyes were bloodshot and glassy. The officer detected a moderate odor of alcohol on the driver’s breath. The driver informed the officer that he was from Round Rock and was following the directions given to him by his GPS system. The officer administered the Standardized Field Sobriety Test to the driver. The driver displayed a number of clues that indicated he was intoxicated. The driver was taken into custody for Driving While Intoxicated and transported to Central Booking. No GPS directions were needed for the officer. Occurred on: 4-18-11, at 2:51 AM. 300 BLOCK EAST 24th STREET Driving While Intoxicated: A UT Police Officer observed a gold colored Honda committing several traffic offenses. During the traffic investigation, the officer detected a moderate odor of alcohol on the driver’s breath. The officers administered the Standardized Field Sobriety Test to the UT student driver. The student displayed a number of clues that indicated she was intoxicated. The student was taken into custody for Driving While Intoxicated and was transported to Central Booking. The second officer on the scene identified the two passengers inside the vehicle and discovered both of them were sober. Occurred on: Occurred on: 4-16-11, at 2:40 AM. A number of these arrests that could have been avoided with proper planning beforehand…a sober friend for starters. In today’s economic times a first time DWI charge will cost you the following: $5,000.00 for an Attorney, $3,000.00 for Trial fees, $250.00 Court costs. To get your driver’s license back: $250.00 for an Occupational License, $125.00 Re-Instatement fee, $1,000.00 DL surcharge for the next 3 years, and $130.00 for a 12 hour Drug and Alcohol Class. Grand Total: $11,755.00. for a first time DWI arrest. 400 BLOCK EAST 20 ½ STREET Suspicious Person: A UT Police Officer heard a non-UT subject yelling for help. The subject was located half way up a tall pine tree yelling he was being chased by three Pit Bulls and a subject in a boat. During the investigation, the officer drove the subject home and released him into the care of his mother. Occurred on: 4-17-11, at 4:44 AM. 1900 BLOCK SAN JACINTO BLVD Public Intoxication: A UT Police Officer observed a UT student staggering as he attempted to cross the street. The student was involved in a continuous battle fighting the effects of Earth’s gravity, and trying to keep his pants from falling down. During the investigation, the officer detected a very strong odor of alcohol on the student’s breath and noted other signs of intoxication. The subject was taken into custody for Public Intoxication and was transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 4-17-11, at 2:27 AM. 2200 BLOCK ROBERT DEDMAN Public Intoxication: A non-UT subject was reported to be staggering in a lane of traffic. During the investigation, the officers located the subject and detected a very strong odor of alcohol on his breath. The subject informed the officers he was intending to find his vehicle and drive home. The subject was taken into custody for Public Intoxication and was transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 4-16-11, at 12:07 AM. CAMPUS WIDE: Non-Criminal Calls: In addition to the above criminal cases, the University of Texas Police Department responded to 50 Alarm Calls, 2 Suspicious Person Reports, 5 Suspicious Activity Reports, 2 Welfare Concerns, and 8 Unsecured Door Report between 04/15/11 and 04/18/11.
