The unknown subject asked the student to cash the money orders, pay the rent then send the remaining cash back to him. The heads-up student believed she was being scammed, and she was by the way, and asked for more information for the want-a-be renter. When pressed for more information, the unknown subject stopped all communication with the student. Occurred on: 4-19-11, at 12:43 PM. Crime Prevention Tip: This is an old scam that has been featured in the Campus Watch. This scam has been successful, that it why it keeps resurfacing. The con artist is relying on two things to make the theft work, greed and lack of information. The less you know and the more dollar signs you see the more you will lower your guard. The money orders or checks are all counterfeit. The thief knows it takes a few days for the checks to clear a bank. If you suspect the business deal you are involved in is a scam, press for more information from the person you are dealing with. Or your second option, wait for the money to clear the bank before you rush to conclude the business deal. This student did a great job in detecting and avoiding a scam artist. CAMPUS WIDE: Non-Criminal Calls: In addition to the above criminal cases, the University of Texas Police Department responded to 49 Alarm Calls, 1 Call Box Alarm, 10 Burned Out Lights, 2 Suspicious Person Reports, 1 Suspicious Activity Reports, and 2 Unsecured Door Report between 04/19/11 and 04/21/11.
