Report for 04/26/2011

Campus Watch: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department between Monday, 04/25/11 and Tuesday, 04/26/11. COMMUNICATIONS BUILDING-A, 2504-A Whitis Ave Theft: An Apple laptop computer was reported stolen after being left unattended and unsecured on a table located on the 3rd floor. During the investigation, the officers learned an unknown White male had been seen entering the area when the victim arrived. The same subject was seen leaving the area prior to the victim discovering his property had been stolen. The unknown subject was described as: older White male, 50 years of age, wearing a black hat, black jacket, black pants and glasses. Loss value: $1,000.00. Occurred on: 4-25-11, between 7:45 AM and 7:50 AM. GOLDSMITH HALL, #5 West Mall Criminal Trespass Warning: A non-UT subject was reported to be walking through the building carrying a plastic bag full of clothes. During the investigation, the officers located the subject inside a 2nd floor restroom. The officers issued the subject a written Criminal Trespass Warning and escorted him from the area. Occurred on: 4-25-11, at 8:36 AM. GREGORY GYM, 2101 Speedway Many of you may have noticed that Gregory Gym has not been in the Campus Watch for the last few days. Two suspects were identified and were taken into custody last week for several of the reported thefts. This does not mean you can safely leave your property unattended or unsecured. All you need inside the gym is your ID card to get in. All other property needs to be secured inside one of the many lockers that are provided by Res Sports or leave your stuff inside your dorm. PARKING LOT 103, 2100 Comal Burglary of Motor Vehicle / Evading Arrest / Criminal Trespass / Assist Outside Agency: A UT Police Officer discovered the driver’s side window of a silver Chevy truck had been broken out. As the officer was investigating the Burglary of Motor Vehicle, he discovered a second vehicle with a shattered driver’s side window. As the officer approached the second vehicle, he quickly realized the vehicle was still occupied and the suspect was hiding in the back seat area. The suspect refused to comply with the officers requests and was pepper sprayed. The suspect left the vehicle quickly and attempted to flee the area. After a short jaunt the suspect was taken into custody. During the investigation, the officers learned the suspect had received a prior Criminal Trespass Warning on 3-15-11 after he was taken into custody as a suspect in another Burglary of Motor Vehicle case. In addition, the suspect had an outstanding Outside Agency arrest warrant for Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. The suspect was transported to Central Booking. In addition to the law enforcement actions taken by the officers, the subject was issued another Criminal Trespass Warning. Loss value: Unknown at this time. Occurred on: 4-25-11, at 8:59 PM. Crime Prevention Tip: Prior to the start of Spring Break there was a spike in the number of reported Burglary of Motor Vehicles in the parking lots located by the Baseball Stadium. Many of the victims had left items visible inside their vehicles that could be seen from the outside of the vehicle. That is what happened in these two cases. A backpack was plainly visible inside one of the vehicles as was a cell phone charger. Both of these items will make a thief think there is other property somewhere inside the vehicle. Remove all property from your vehicle. If it cannot be removed, hide it. CAMPUS WIDE: Non-Criminal Calls: In addition to the above criminal cases, the University of Texas Police Department responded to 16 Alarm Calls, 2 EMS calls, 2 Suspicious Person Reports, 3 Suspicious Activity Reports, and 2 Unsecured Door Report between 04/25/11 and 04/26/11.
