Campus Watch: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department between Wednesday, 04/27/11 and Thursday, 04/28/11. BELMONT HALL, 2109 San Jacinto Blvd. Theft: A gold and diamond 2012 class ring was reported stolen after being left unattended inside a 3rd floor women’s restroom. Loss value: $600.00. Occurred on: 4-27-11, between 10:00 AM and 10:10 AM. INTRAMURAL FIELDS, 4901 Guadalupe Criminal Trespass Warning: A UT Police Officer observed a non-UT subject walking between several parked cars carrying a flashlight. The subject attempted to leave the area when he saw the officer coming towards him. During the investigation, the subject informed the officer that he was using the flashlight to illuminate his path, regardless of the fact that the parking lot was well lit with the playing field lights. The subject also claimed to be there to workout, despite not giving the appearance of one who is concerned about their health. The subject was issued a written Criminal Trespass Warning and was escorted from the area. Occurred on: 4-27-11, at 8:30 PM. LIVING LEARNING CENTER, 2610 Whitis Ave Suspicious Person: Several UT students and several UT staff members reported an unknown subject was suspiciously lurking around the area. The responding officers searched the area with negative results. The unknown subject was described as: White male, last seen wearing a blue shirt and a cap. Occurred on: 4-27-11, at 11:32 PM. SEAY BUILDING, 108 East Dean Keeton Theft: A black backpack containing several textbooks, notebooks and a Toshiba laptop computer was reported stolen. During the investigation, the officer learned the student had been instructed to leave his personal property in the lobby while he took part in a study. At the conclusion of the study, the student discovered his property had been taken. Loss value: $600.00. Occurred on: 4-27-11, between 6:15 PM and 6:25 PM. Crime Prevention Tip: If you find yourself in this type of situation, respectfully decline when asked to leave your property unsecured and unattended. If the department or individual is providing you a safe and secure alternative, there is no reason for you to leave your property unattended. Remember there are three things a thief needs in order to commit a crime, desire, ability and opportunity. The only thing you can change is opportunity. No opportunity….no crime. 200 BLOCK WEST 6th STREET Possession of a Controlled Substance / Public Intoxication: A non-UT subject was observed throwing items from a backpack all over the ground. During the investigation, the officers located the subject stumbling and staggering as he attempted to maintain his bearings. The officers detected a very strong odor of alcohol on the subject’s breath and noted other signs of intoxication. When the officers asked the subject about the backpack and the contents of the backpack the subject looked at the officers with a confused look on his face. The subject was taken into custody for Public Intoxication. During a search, incidental to his arrest, the officers discovered the subject was in possession of a single white pill, later identified as Hydrocodone. An additional charge of Possession of a Controlled Substance was filed. Occurred on: 4-28-11, at 3:07 AM. 200 BLOCK EAST 21st STREET Possession of Drug Paraphernalia: A UT bike patrol officer patrolling around the dormitories detected the odor of burning marijuana coming from a sitting area between Brackenridge and Roberts Dorms. Three UT students were seen puffing, puffing and passing a rolled up marijuana cigarette back and forth. When one student realized a UT Police Officer was approaching, the puff-puff-pass was interrupted with a quick throw of the cigarette into the tall grass. During the investigation, the officers discovered one student was in possession of a silver grinder and a small glass pipe that contained marijuana residue. The student was issued a court appearance citation for Possession of drug Paraphernalia. No charges for Attempted Arson were filed. Occurred on: 4-28-11, at 1:51 AM. Fire Safety Tip: There is a fire ban throughout the entire State of Texas. This ban encompasses open flames, wood burning pits, and burning grass. 300 BLOCK EAST 21st STREET Possession of Marijuana / Possession of Drug Paraphernalia: A white Buick was observed travelling with a burned out headlamp. During the traffic investigation, one of the officers observed a green leafy material on the passenger’s seat. The officer recognized the material as marijuana. During a search of the vehicle, the officers discovered a clear plastic baggie containing marijuana as well as a glass pipe. The subject was taken into custody for Possession of Marijuana / Possession of Drug Paraphernalia and was transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 4-28-11, at 12:43 AM. CAMPUS WIDE: Non-Criminal Calls: In addition to the above criminal cases, the University of Texas Police Department responded to 23 Alarm Calls, 2 EMS Calls, 1 Suspicious Person Report, 1 Suspicious Person Call, and 2 Unsecured Door Reports between 04/27/11 and 04/28/11.
