Campus Watch: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department between Friday, 04/30/2011 and Tuesday, 05/03/11. COMMUNICATIONS BUILDING A, 2504-A Whitis Ave. Theft: A UT student observed two unknown subjects attempting to steal a yellow Peugeot bicycle that was secured to the bike racks located on the east side of the building. The student confronted the suspects and asked them what they were intending to do. The unknown subjects handed the Peugeot to the student and left the area. The unknown subjects were described as: Black male, last seen wearing a blue beanie and blue sweatshirt; white male, wearing a white cap and a black jacket. The bike was impounded for safe keeping until the owner is contacted. Occurred on: 5-02-11, at 8:41 PM. DIVERSITY AND COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT CENTER, 1009 East 11th Street Criminal Trespass Warning: A UT staff member reported a non-UT subject had entered the building and was yelling and being belligerent towards the staff. The subject left the building prior to the arrival of the police officers. During the investigation, the officers located the subject a few blocks away and issued him a written Criminal Trespass Warning. Occurred on: 5-02-11, at 9:08 AM. JESTER EAST DORMITORY, 203 East 21st Street Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor: A UT staff member discovered a UT student passed out inside a 10th floor women’s restroom. During the investigation, the officers located the subject and discovered she had been drinking adult beverages prior to passing out inside the restroom. The student was issued a court appearance citation for Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor and was referred to the Dean of Student’s Office. Occurred on: 5-01-11, at 2:14 AM. LITTLEFIELD DORMITORY, 201 West Dean Keeton Suspicious Person: A UT staff member reported a male subject was seen looking into the windows of the dormitory from inside the courtyard area. During the investigation, the officers located the subject sitting at a table reading. The UT student informed the officers that he was taking a break from reading and decided to look into the study area of the dormitory. The staff member never saw the student attempting to look into any occupied dorm rooms. The student was identified and released after talking to the officers about other alternatives when taking a reading break. Occurred on: 5-02-11, at 1:32 AM. LIVING LEARNING CENTER, 2610-B Whitis Ave Theft / Fraud: A UT student discovered her UT ID card and meal plan had been stolen. Prior to deactivating her UT ID card, the student discovered two unauthorized purchases had been made at two separate UT locations. Loss value: $48.62. Occurred between: 4-30-11 and 5-01-11. PARKING LOT 35, 2200 Comal Criminal Trespass Warning / Possession of Marijuana: A non-UT subject was discovered passed out in the parking lot. During the investigation, the subject informed the officer that he had been walking and was simply resting until he got home. As the subject was looking through his bag for his identification, the officer observed a clear plastic baggie that contained a green leafy substance the officer recognized as marijuana along with a pack of rolling papers. The marijuana and rolling papers were confiscated and the subject was issued a court appearance citation for Possession of Marijuana. In addition to the law enforcement actions taken, the subject was issued a written Criminal Trespass Warning and was escorted from the area. Occurred on: 5-01-11, at 9:12 AM. PERRY-CASTANEDA LIBRARY, 101 East 21st Street Assist Outside Agency: A non-UT subject appeared to be agitated when he entered the building and became argumentative towards the staff. During the investigation, the officers located the subject on the fifth floor. The subject informed the officers he simply wanted to use the library. The officers soon discovered the subject had two outstanding Outside Agency arrest warrants for Theft and Attempted Theft. The subject was taken into custody and was transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 4-30-11, at 6:25 PM. PERRY-CASTANEDA LIBRARY, 101 East 21st Street Theft: An Apple laptop computer was reported stolen after being left unattended on top of a study carrel, located on the 4th floor, for an extended period of time. Loss value: $1,100.00. Occurred on: 5-02-11, between 10:10 AM and 10:30 AM. Crime Prevention Tip: It is that time of the year again. Many students are discovering the University of Texas has a library. This is also the time of the year when thefts begin to increase within the PCL as more students are there cramming.. I mean studying. Many of these thieves are waiting and watching for an opportunity to steal your property. Do not leave your property unattended for any length of time. Study with a group of friends that you trust to watch your property if you need to leave. I would like to encourage you to report any and all suspicious activity or suspicious people you see. SAN JACINTO PARKING GARAGE, 2401 San Jacinto Blvd Burglary of Motor Vehicle: A UT Police Officer responded to the third level of the parking garage on a report of a vehicle with a broken window. During the investigation, the officer observed the passenger side window had been broken out and $2.00 in cash had been stolen from the vehicle. Estimated repair: $250.00. Loss value: $2.00. Occurred on: 5-1-11, between 3:49 PM and 5:30 PM. TRINITY PARKING GARAGE, 1815 Trinity Ave Theft: A black Jamis mountain bicycle was reported stolen from the bike racks located on the north side of the building after being secured with a U-shaped lock and a self-locking cable lock. Loss value: $100.00. Occurred between: 4-28-11 and 5-02-11. 200 BLOCK WEST 6th STREET Public Intoxication: A UT police officer observed a non-UT subject staggering as he attempted to walk along the straight sidewalk. After the subject fell and had a difficult time getting up, the officer detected a very strong odor of alcohol the subject’s breath. The subject informed the officer that he had consumed a large quantity of alcohol. The subject was taken into custody for Public Intoxication and was transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 5-01-11, at 2:23 AM. 300 BLOCK WEST 21st STREET Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor: A UT student was discovered passed out on the west side of Benedict Hall. After being awakened, the student handed the officer a pack of bubble gum and his student ID. The officer handed the pack of gum back, but the student was insistent on giving the officer a piece of gum instead of his driver’s license. During the investigation, the officer learned why the student was insistent on giving him a piece gum; the student was in possession of a fake ID card that purported him to be 21 years of age as well as a current Texas ID card that stated otherwise. The student was issued a field release citation for Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor and his fake ID was confiscated. Occurred on: 4-30-11, at 3:27 AM. 2100 BLOCK SPEEDWAY Public Intoxication / Failure to Identify: A UT student was observed staggering, falling and having a difficult time maintaining his balance. The student was seen bouncing off the exterior wall of CBA. When asked for his ID, the student stated it was in his wallet, but he had a difficult time retrieving his wallet from his back pocket. The subject gave up trying and provided the officers with a name and date of birth. He then explained that he had been to a local restaurant where he had consumed 1 margarita, 2 Mexican martinis, and 3 shots of tequila. The student attempted to use a retaining wall to maintain his balance while talking to the officers. It was apparent the student may have seen the four shot glass poem as he once again hit the floor. After being taken into custody for Public Intoxication, the officers removed his wallet and discovered he had given them a false name and date of birth. The student was transported to Central Booking and additional charges for Failure to ID were filed. Occurred on: 4-30-11, at 2:58 AM. 2300 BLOCK GUADALUPE Assault: A UT student reported she was assaulted by an unknown subject while standing in front of the Union Building. The unknown subject was described as: White female, 5’-3” with brown hair. Was last seen wearing a white tank top and a pink skirt. Occurred on: 4-29-11, at 5:00 PM. CAMPUS WIDE: Non-Criminal Calls: In addition to the above criminal cases, the University of Texas Police Department responded to 96 Alarm Calls, 5 Call Box Alarms, 7 EMS Calls, 5 Suspicious Person Report, 8 Suspicious Activity Reports, 5 Malfunctioning Lights, and 22 Unsecured Door Reports between 04/29/11 and 05/03/11.
