Campus Watch: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department between Tuesday, 05/10/11 and Thursday, 5-12-11. BELMONT HALL, 2109 San Jacinto Blvd. Theft: A UT staff member discovered a set of keys had been stolen from a first floor office. During the investigation, the officer learned the keys had been left inside an unsecured file cabinet. Loss value: Unknown at this time. Occurred between: 5-09-11 and 5-10-11. DELL PEDIATRIC INSTITUTE, 1400 Barbara Jordan Blvd. Burglary of Motor Vehicle: A UT contractor reported five spools of copper wire were reported stolen from the back of a truck. Loss value: $750.00. Occurred on: 5-10-11, between 11:50 AM and 1:30 PM. GREGORY GYM, 2101 Speedway Theft: A UT student reported a credit card holder containing several credit cards and personal identification was stolen. During the investigation, the officers learned the holder had been inside a closed backpack that was left unattended while the student was in the showers. Loss value: $26.00. Occurred on: 5-10-11, between 2:45 PM and 2:50 PM. GUADALUPE PARKING GARAGE, 1616 Guadalupe Criminal Trespass Warning: A UT staff member reported a non-UT subject was sitting in a chair at the entrance to the garage eating from a pot. During the investigation the officer issued the subject a written Criminal Trespass Warning and escorted him from the area. Occurred on: 5-10-11, at 8:47 PM. LONGVIEW TEXAS Assist Outside Agency: The parent of a UT student received a suspicious telephone call. The caller claimed to be calling on behalf of the UT College of Engineering. The caller asked the parent to make a donation to the college due to state and federal tax cuts. The caller asked for $250.00 and for the parent’s credit or debit card number. When the parent refused the caller reduced the amount and again was insistent on obtaining either a credit card or debt card number. Again the parent refused. The caller then told the parent she could decide on the amount she wished to donate at a later date, all she needed to do was provide the caller with a credit card or debit card number now. Occurred on: 5-11-11, at 6:05 PM. Crime Prevention Tip: I contacted the College of Engineering and they are in the process of raising funds. If you suspect the call to be suspicious simply hang up on the caller. You can request a callback number from the caller or ask to speak directly to their supervisor. Any call made from a UT call center will have a supervisor on duty to answer your questions. If you have any questions about legitimacy of the call you can also contact the Dean’s Office at 512-471-1166. 100 BLOCK EAST 21st STREET Theft: A red Di Blasi Express scooter was reported stolen from the bike racks located on the north side of PCL. During the investigation, the office learned the scooter had been secured to the bike rack with a self-locking cable lock. Loss value: $510.00. Occurred on: 5-11-12, between 1:30 PM and 8:30 PM. 500 BLOCK WEST 6th STREET Public Intoxication: A non-UT subject was observed staggering to a point he lost his fight with Earth’s gravity. During the investigation, the officers detected a very strong odor of alcohol on the subject’s breath and observed several clues of intoxication, including being very confused. The officers learned the subject had been consuming large quantities of alcohol at several local establishments. The subject was taken into custody for Public Intoxication and was transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 5-11-11, at 2:33 AM. CAMPUS WIDE: Non-Criminal Calls: In addition to the above criminal cases, the University of Texas Police Department responded to 39 Alarm Calls, 2 Call Box Alarm, 1 EMS Call, 2 Suspicious Activity Reports, 2 Suspicious Person Reports, and 5 Unsecured Door Reports between 05/10/11 and 05/12/11.
