Crime Prevention Tip: Being alert to your surrounding and noticing suspicious behavior was key to the officers making this arrest. The staff member noticed the subject pulling on door handles and notified the police. The officers responded to the area and located the subject. The University of Texas Police Department will be contacting this staff member to make arrangements to deliver her a Free Pizza. Crime Prevention Tip: Prior to seeing the latest group of Longhorn graduates off this weekend, the UT Police Department would like to remind everyone of the potential for thefts from UT buildings on graduation day. Over the previous years, there has been a spike in thefts on graduation day. This is attributed to several factors. First and foremost, many academic and administrative buildings will be open for official visitors for graduation ceremonies. This provides a thief with the opportunity to be in a position to commit a theft. With the number of visitors exploring the campus, a thief also has the ability to blend into the environment without being noticed or challenged. With this in mind, your University of Texas Police Department would like to solicit your assistance in reducing the opportunities for thefts. To aid our efforts in reducing thefts, we would like to encourage you to send this e-mail to those in your building to encourage them to take preventative action. Simple things you and your staff can do to prevent thefts this weekend include: - Remove personal property from each of your offices for the weekend. - Secure valuables that you cannot take home in a lockable office desk or cabinet. - Make sure the alarm systems in your area of control are working properly before this weekend. - Check and re-check to make sure the doors and windows to your office are secured before you leave for the weekend. - If you have cause to be in your building this weekend, pay attention to those around you and offer assistance to those who appear to be lost or wandering around. You might be surprised how quickly a “May I help you?” can scare off a thief. - While you are in the office, make sure you close and lock your door whenever you leave the office – even if you will only be out of the office for a second or two. A theft only takes a second in an open office. - Report any suspicious activity as soon as you see it. The UT Police Department will be open for business and can be reached at 512-471-4441; or 911 on a campus telephone. Together, we can protect our campus for future Longhorns.
