Campus Watch: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department between Thursday, 06/02/11 and Friday, 06/03/11. FRANK ERWIN CENTER, 1701 Red River Found Property: A UT staff member discovered a clear plastic baggie containing a green leafy substance inside one of the restrooms. The responding officer took custody of the “found” property and transported the property back to the University of Texas Police Department for safe keeping. Occurred on: 6-02-11, at 11:40 AM. Commentary: If you have misplaced a clear plastic baggie containing a green leafy substance, you may claim it at the UT Police Department. After a quick test, we will determine if you can legally possess this item. PARKING LOT 104, 1900 Block North IH-35 Theft: A UT staff member observed two unknown subjects loading spools of copper wire into a dark colored truck. The copper was being removed from an enclosure located on the southwest side of CRB. When the suspects saw the staff member, the fled from the area. Loss value: Unknown at this time. Occurred on: 6-03-11, at 4:14 AM. PARKING LOT 111, 2200 Salina Criminal Mischief: A UT student discovered an unknown subject had damaged the paint on her vehicle. During the investigation, the officer observed a deep scratch going across the front of a 2010 Nissan. Estimated damage: $500.00. Discovered on: 5-27-11. UNION BUILDING, #4 West Mall Theft: A UT student reported he left his black HTC cellular telephone unattended on a counter located on the first floor. The victim quickly returned to the counter and discovered his phone was gone. Loss value: $200.00. Occurred on: 6-02-11, between 5:30 PM and 5:33 PM. UNION BUILDING, #4 West Mall Assault with Bodily Injury: Four non-UT subjects were watching the NBA Championship game inside the Underground. After the game, one exuberant fan began chanting, “GO DALLAS!” The other team’s fan insisted the Mavs fan stop chanting. When the chanting continued, the suspect turned around and punched the victim in the face with a closed fist. The suspect was last seen walking north on Guadalupe. The suspect was described as, white male, 40 years of age, grey shoulder length hair worn in pigtails, 5’-8” and 250 pounds. The suspect was last seen wearing a blue t-shirt and blue shorts. Occurred on: 6-2-11, at 10:50 PM. 2000 BLOCK SAN JACINTO BLVD. Public Intoxication: A UT Police Officer observed a non-UT subject stumbling back and forth between his navigational beacons. Had it not been for a properly placed bridge, the subject would have fallen into the creek after bumping into the guardrail. During the investigation, the officers detected a very strong odor of alcohol on the subject’s breath and noted his eyes were bloodshot. The subject informed the officers that he had consumed 15 beers and several shots. Based on his motor skills and memory that was a strong possibility. He stated he had started drinking at 6:00 PM and had his last drink at 1:30 PM, on the same day. The subject was taken into custody for Public Intoxication and was transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 6-3-11, at 2:33 AM. CAMPUS WIDE: Non-Criminal Calls: In addition to the above criminal cases, the University of Texas Police Department responded to 22 Alarm Calls, 2 Callbox Alarm, 2 Suspicious Activity Reports, 3 Suspicious Person Report, 3 Burned out Light reports, and 5 Unsecured Door Reports between 06/02/11 and 06/03/11. Emergency Text Message Service The University of Texas at Austin and its police department are responsible for notifying faculty, staff, and students of emergency situations (e.g., inclement weather, building evacuations, campus closures, etc.). The University employs a wide variety of tools to make sure everyone on campus is informed during an emergency event—including text messaging. In order to accomplish emergency text messaging more effectively, the University is collecting cell phone numbers from members of our campus community. Effective August 26, 2009, this database of cell phone numbers will be used for emergency text messages. RAD Program For Women, Now Available (Classes are FREE) Advanced RAD Classes Being Held for RAD Class Graduates The RAD program is a 16-hour course of realistic self-defense tactics and techniques for women that cover assault prevention and risk reduction while progressing on to basic hands-on defense training. http://www.utexas.edu/police/rad/ Defensive Driving: Learn Defensive Driving from a UTPD Police Officer. UTPD generally schedules a Defensive Driving Class approximately once a month – based on need. The classes meet in the University Police Building, Room 1.318, located at 2201 Robert Dedman Dr (east of Memorial Stadium). The cost for the course is $25.00 (check or cash) payable on class date. If paying in cash, please bring the exact amount because change may not be available. You will also need to bring your driver's license. BCAL provides a central resource for UT faculty, students, and staff who may have concerns about the behavior or well-being of another member of the campus community.
