Campus Watch: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department between Wednesday, 08/24/11 and Thursday, 08/25/11. ENGINEERING TEACHING CENTER, 204 East Dean Keeton Theft: A backpack containing a pink Tory wallet, black Apple iPhone, $250.00 in cash, and personal identification was reported stolen from a 2nd floor classroom. During the investigation, the officer learned the property had been left unattended and unsecured in the back of the classroom while the student was at the front of the classroom. Loss value: $375.00. Occurred on: 8-24-11 at 3:00 PM. Crime Prevention Tip: When opportunity comes knocking, a thief responds… at your expense. GOLDSMITH HALL, #5 West Mall Suspicious Person: A UT staff member observed an unknown subject opening several classroom and office doors and peeking into the rooms. When confronted the subject informed the staff member that he did not need anything and left the area. The unknown subject was described as: Black male, 5’-07”, 130 pounds, short white beard and last seen wearing dark colored clothing. Occurred on: 8-24-11, at 10:44 AM. The UT Police Department encourages you to report any and all suspicious activity and suspicious people. GREGORY GYM, 2109 Speedway Criminal Trespass Warning: A UT staff member observed a non-UT subject had entered into the building without first purchasing a guest pass. During the investigation, the officers located the subject on the 3rd floor playing basketball. The subject informed the officers he was intending to pay for a guest pass as he was leaving the gym for the day. The subject was issued a Criminal Trespass Warning and was escorted from the area. Occurred on: 8-24-11, at 2:48 PM. JESTER WEST RESIDENCE HALL, 201 East 21st Street Criminal Trespass Warning: A non-UT subject attempted to walk past the late night staff member without showing an ID. When stopped, the subject stated he was going to visit is daughter. The subject left the area. Several hours later the staff member witnessed the same subject returning to Jester. During the investigation, the officers located the subject. The officers learned the subject was waiting for the library to open and he denied wanting to visit his daughter. The subject claimed his daughter was a student at OU. The subject was issued a written Criminal Trespass Warning and was escorted from the area. Occurred on: 8-25-11, at 6:12 AM TRINITY PARKING GARAGE, 1815 Trinity Ave Suspicious Person: A UT staff member observed two unknown subjects approach the bike racks and begin looking at all of the bicycles that were secured to the racks. The staff member stated the subjects remained for about 10 minutes before leaving. Subjects were described as: Black males wearing t-shirts. The responding officers searched the area with negative results. Occurred on: 8-25-11, at 5:03 AM. Emergency Text Message Service The University of Texas at Austin and its police department are responsible for notifying faculty, staff, and students of emergency situations (e.g., inclement weather, building evacuations, campus closures, etc.). The University employs a wide variety of tools to make sure everyone on campus is informed during an emergency event—including text messaging. In order to accomplish emergency text messaging more effectively, the University is collecting cell phone numbers from members of our campus community. RAD Program For Women, Now Available (Classes are FREE) Advanced RAD Classes Being Held for RAD Class Graduates The RAD program is a 16-hour course of realistic self-defense tactics and techniques for women that cover assault prevention and risk reduction while progressing on to basic hands-on defense training. http://www.utexas.edu/police/rad/ Defensive Driving: Learn Defensive Driving from a UTPD Police Officer. UTPD generally schedules a Defensive Driving Class approximately once a month – based on need. The classes meet in the University Police Building, Room 1.318, located at 2201 Robert Dedman Dr (east of Memorial Stadium). The cost for the course is $25.00 (check or cash) payable on class date. If paying in cash, please bring the exact amount because change may not be available. You will also need to bring your driver's license. BCAL provides a central resource for UT faculty, students, and staff who may have concerns about the behavior or well-being of another member of the campus community.
