Campus Watch: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department between Wednesday, 08/31/11 and Thursday, 09/01/11. ADMINISTRATIVE MESSAGE The University of Texas Police Department is currently accepting application for the next Citizen Police Academy. BERNARD RAPOPORT BUILDING, #5 East Mall Harassment: A UT staff member reported receiving harassing and annoying telephone calls from a non-UT subject. During the investigation, the officer contacted the suspect, but before the officer could begin his investigation the suspect hung up the telephone. Occurred on: 8-31-11 at 1:08 PM. Crime Prevention Tip: Harassing telephone calls are annoying and at times can be threatening. The staff member in this case played a big part in the officer’s investigation by obtaining the caller’s telephone number. The University of Texas has in place *57. To use *57 from any UT telephone simply hang up on the caller. Pick up the receiver and dial *57. You will hear one of two messages, the number was trapped or the number could not be trapped. This is a free service at the University of Texas. Southwestern Bell also offers this service for non-UT numbers, the average cost to trap at telephone number is $4.95. PERRY-CASTANEDA LIBRARY, 101 East 21st Street Theft: A brown leather wallet containing a credit card and personal identification was reported stolen. During the investigation, the officer learned the wallet and its contents had been left unsecured and unattended somewhere inside the library. Loss value: $12.00. Occurred on: 8-31-11, between 3:15 PM and 3:45 PM. SAN JACINTO RESIDENCE HALL, 309 East 21st Street Theft: A white Nishiki mountain bicycle was reported stolen from the bike racks located on the north side of the building after being secured with a self-locking cable lock. Loss value: $410.00. Occurred between: 8-30-11 and 8-31-11. 1500 BLOCK SAN ANTONIO Assist Outside Agency: A non-UT subject flagged down a UT Police Officer. The subject informed the officer that he had an outstanding warrant and wanted to turn himself in. The officer verified the subject’s information and confirmed the subject had an outstanding Outside Agency arrest warrant for Lying on a Public Sidewalk. The subject was taken into custody and was transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 9-01-11, at 3:04 AM. Emergency Text Message Service The University of Texas at Austin and its police department are responsible for notifying faculty, staff, and students of emergency situations (e.g., inclement weather, building evacuations, campus closures, etc.). The University employs a wide variety of tools to make sure everyone on campus is informed during an emergency event—including text messaging. In order to accomplish emergency text messaging more effectively, the University is collecting cell phone numbers from members of our campus community. Effective August 26, 2009, this database of cell phone numbers will be used for emergency text messages. RAD Program For Women, Now Available (Classes are FREE) Advanced RAD Classes Being Held for RAD Class Graduates The RAD program is a 16-hour course of realistic self-defense tactics and techniques for women that cover assault prevention and risk reduction while progressing on to basic hands-on defense training. http://www.utexas.edu/police/rad/ Defensive Driving: Learn Defensive Driving from a UTPD Police Officer. UTPD generally schedules a Defensive Driving Class approximately once a month – based on need. The classes meet in the University Police Building, Room 1.318, located at 2201 Robert Dedman Dr (east of Memorial Stadium). The cost for the course is $25.00 (check or cash) payable on class date. If paying in cash, please bring the exact amount because change may not be available. You will also need to bring your driver's license. BCAL provides a central resource for UT faculty, students, and staff who may have concerns about the behavior or well-being of another member of the campus community. By calling BCAL at 512-232-5050, callers may talk with trained staff members who will assist the caller in exploring available options and strategies as well as referrals to appropriate campus support networks.
