Campus Watch: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department between Friday, 09/02/11 and Tuesday, 09/06/11. ADMINISTRATIVE MESSAGE The University of Texas Police Department is currently accepting application for the next Citizen Police Academy. BRACKENRIDGE APARTMENTS, 3350 Lake Austin Blvd. Assault by Contact: UT Police Officers responded to a report of an Assault. During the investigation, the officers learned a UT student had been assaulted by a non-UT subject during an argument over laundry. The non-UT subject was taken into custody for Assault by Contact and was transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 9-04-11, at 4:45 AM. BRAZOS PARKING GARAGE, 200 East Martin Luther King Blvd. Burglary of Motor Vehicle: A UT student discovered her vehicle was unlocked and several items had been removed from the glove box. Loss value: $17.00. Occurred on: 9-04-11, between 2:45 PM and 11:56 PM. BRAZOS PARKING GARAGE, 200 East Martin Luther King Blvd. Possession of Marijuana / Possession of Drug Paraphernalia: A UT Police Officer detected the distinctive aroma of burning marijuana and located the source. The officer discovered three UT students sitting side-by-side passing a large glass “bong” between them. During the investigation, only one student claimed ownership of the “bong” and 5 small clear plastic baggies containing a green leafy substance that was later identified as marijuana. One student received a court appearance citation for Possession of Marijuana / Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. All three students were given referrals to the Dean of Student’s Office. Occurred on: 9-04-11, at 11:50 PM. DKR TEXAS MEMORIAL STADIUM, 2200 Robert Dedman Drive Theft: An unknown subject approached a worker inside a concessions stand, located on the mezzanine level, to change a sum of smaller bills for a larger bill. As the transaction was being conducted, the suspect then distracted the worker by placing an order of food. The concession worker handed the subject a $100.00 as well as his food order. The subject then turned and walked away. The unknown subject was described as: Hispanic male, heavy set with a short beard. Loss value: Unknown at this time. Occurred on: 9-03-11, at 9:30 PM. DKR TEXAS MEMORIAL STADIUM, 2200 Robert Dedman Drive Possession of Alcohol by a Minor: A UT Police Officer observed a UT student staggering as he attempted to walk towards the upper deck. The student had failed to conceal the flask that was in his front pants pocket. During the investigation, the officer learned the student was under the legal age to be in possession of alcohol. The student was issued a court appearance citation for Possession of Alcohol by a Minor as well as a referral to the Dean of Student’s Office. Occurred on: 9-03-11, at 8:56 PM. DKR TEXAS MEMORIAL STADIUM, 2200 Robert Dedman Drive Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor: A UT Police Officer observed a UT student attempt to escort a non-ticketed UT student into the stadium. During the investigation, the officers detected a moderate odor of alcohol on the non-ticketed student’s breath. The officers learned the student was under the legal age of 21 and had been consuming adult beverages. The student was issued a court appearance citation for Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor as well as a referral to the Dean of Student’s Office. Occurred on: 9-03-11, at 8:34 PM. DKR TEXAS MEMORIAL STADIUM, 2200 Robert Dedman Drive Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor (2 Counts): A Police Officer observed two UT students approach the entrance to the Stadium drinking from a coke bottle. Both students had a very strong odor of alcohol on their person and the officer soon learned both students were under the legal age of 21. Both students were issued court appearance citations for Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor. Occurred on: 9-04-11, at 1:22 AM. DKR TEXAS MEMORIAL STADIUM, 2200 Robert Dedman Drive Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor: A UT Police Officer observed two UT students ranting and raving. It appeared if both subjects were attempting to start a fight. The officer observed one of the students displaying his finger, but not in the manner as one would when counting. During the investigation, the officers detected a very strong odor of alcohol on the breaths of both students. The officers soon discovered both were under the legal age of 21. Both students were issued court appearance citations for Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor and were given referral to the Dean of Student’s Office. Occurred on: 9-03-11, at 8:30 PM. DKR TEXAS MEMORIAL STADIUM, 2200 Robert Dedman Drive Criminal Trespass Warning: Two non-UT subjects were observed standing on the sidelines during halftime without the proper credentials. During the investigation, both subjects stated they were part of the Rice Cheer Leading squad. However none of the Rice cheer leaders knew who the subjects were. One subject quickly changed his story and stated he was there to take pictures of the football team. Both subjects were issued Criminal Trespass Warning and were escorted from the stadium. Occurred on: 9-03-11, at 8:50 PM. DKR TEXAS MEMORIAL STADIUM, 2200 Robert Dedman Drive Public Intoxication / Assault by Contact / Assault of a Public Servant: A UT staff member reported a UT student had assaulted her after she had refused to allow him to enter into a section of the stadium other than the one he was assigned to. The student began showing his wordsmithing abilities by cursing the staff member with four letter words. When that did not impress the staff member, the student then assaulted the staff member as he pushed his way past her. During the investigation, the officer located the student and detected a very strong odor of alcohol on his breath and noted other signs of intoxication. The student was escorted from the area. When he was informed that he was being ejected from the stadium he swiped at the officer’s hands. The student was taken into custody after that for Public Intoxication and transported to Central Booking. No charges for Assault were filed at this time. Occurred on: 9-03-11, at 7:10 PM. DKR TEXAS MEMORIAL STADIUM, 2200 Robert Dedman Drive Possession of Alcohol by a Minor: A UT student approached the stadium gate with the top of a flask sticking out of his pants pocket. The student refused to provide any information to the officer that had detained him. During the investigation, the officer learned the alcohol was not the student’s, but belonged to an unknown friend. The student was issued a court appearance citation for Possession of Alcohol by a Minor and a referral to the Dan of Student’s Office. Occurred on: 9-03-11, at 7:07 PM. DKR TEXAS MEMORIAL STADIUM, 2200 Robert Dedman Drive Theft: A non-UT subject reported she had felt someone bump into her and then felt a tug on her purse. The victim then discovered her wallet containing personal identification, credit card and $100.00 in cash had been stolen. Loss value: $300.00. Occurred on: 9-03-11, at 7:05 PM. Crime Prevention Tip: Pick Pocketing is not a new type of crime. But this is a crime we are seeing more of over the last 5 years. When you find yourself in a large crowd, ladies keep your purse closed and close to your body. Men, consider placing a thick rubber band around your wallet. The friction it creates will allow you to see who has their hand in your pocket (other than the government.) DKR TEXAS MEMORIAL STADIUM, 2200 Robert Dedman Drive Public Intoxication: A UT student was discovered inside the restroom creating a Shamu sized “splash zone.” During the investigation, the officers detected a very strong odor of alcohol on the student’s breath. When asked for his game ticket the student handed the officers his cell phone. When asked again, the student handed the offices a credit card. The student did not know where he was and was taken into custody for Public Intoxication and transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 9-03-11, at 6:12 PM. ENGINEERING SCIENCE BUILDING, 2501 Speedway Theft: A black Schwinn mountain bicycle was reported stolen from the bike racks located on the northwest side of the building after being secured with a U-shaped lock. Loss value: $250.00. Occurred on: 9-02-11, between 11:00 AM and 11:20 PM. GREGORY GYM, 2101 Speedway Theft: A black Apple iPhone with a black case was reported stolen after being left unattended on a bleacher near a third floor basketball court. During the investigation, the officer learned an unknown subject was seen near the telephone at the time of the theft. The victim confronted the subject who became very nervous and left the area. The unknown subject was described as: White male, 5’-10”, thin build, with dark hair. The subject was last seen wearing a white shirt with blue letters and black shorts. Loss value: $200.00. Occurred on: 9-04-11, between 9:15 PM and 9:29 PM. INTRAMURAL FIELDS, 4901 Guadalupe Burglary of Motor Vehicle / Fraud: Two UT students discovered the vehicle they had used to secure their personal property in had been broken into. A quick inventory of the vehicle revealed both wallets, credit cards, personal identification and a black Apple iPhone had been stolen. During the investigation, the officers learned several of the stolen credit cards had already been used at businesses in Austin and Round Rock. As the investigation continued, the officers learned the identity of the suspect and his location. Officers located the suspect and took him into custody. During a search of the suspect, officer located the stolen Apple iPhone along with both wallets containing the fraudulently used credit cards. Recovered value: Unknown at this time. Occurred on: 9-04-11, at 4:53 PM. Crime Prevention Tip: One of the victims in this case had installed a tracking software program on his cellular telephone. This tracking program assisted the officers in locating and arresting the suspect. LITTLEFIELD FOUNTAIN, 200 BLOCK WEST 21st STREET Public Intoxication: A UT student was observed alternating between staggering down the street and falling down. During the investigation the officers detected a very strong odor of alcohol on the student’s breath and noted other signs of intoxication. The student did not know of any sober friends that would take care of him until he sobered up. The student was taken into custody for Public Intoxication and transported to Central Booking. Once at Central Booking, the student’s intoxication level was so high the student was transported to a local area hospital for alcohol poisoning. Occurred on: 9-03-11, at 7:21 PM. LITTLEFIELD FOUNTAIN, 200 BLOCK WEST 21st STREET Criminal Trespass Warnings: Four UT students were discovered swimming inside the Littlefield Fountain. All four students were given Criminal Trespass Warnings. You may note on the previous entry into the Campus Watch, a student had been arrested for Public Intoxication at this same location hours earlier, I doubt the filter system had everything cleaned out by the time these students decided to go swimming. Occurred on: 9-03-11, at 10:43 PM. LITTLEFIELD RESIDENCE HALL, 201 West Dean Keeton Criminal Trespass Warning: A UT student reported a non-UT subject was acting strange around the dormitory. During the investigation, the officers located the subject and issued him a written Criminal Trespass Warning and escorted him from the area. Occurred on: 9-06-11, at 12:38 AM. LIVING LEARNING CENTER-C, 2610 Whitis Ave Public Intoxication: A UT staff member discovered a UT student sitting in a fetal position after going through an extreme physical reaction to the over consumption of an alcoholic beverage. The student did not know where she was or how she had gotten where she was at. The student was taken into custody for Public Intoxication and transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 9-02-11, at 11:28 PM. MOORE-HILL RESIDENCE HALL, 214 East 21st Street Public Intoxication / Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor: A UT staff member discovered a UT student lying on the floor inside a basement level men’s bathroom. The student had showed evidence that he had going through an extreme physical reaction to the over consumption of alcohol. His head was still resting in the middle of the evidence. Austin EMS treated the subject at the scene for alcohol poisoning and transported him to a local area hospital. Occurred on: 9-03-11, at 12:08 AM. NORTH END ZONE, 4-5 East 23rd Street Public Intoxication: A UT student was discovered passed out near the Longhorn LDT. The student would respond to the officer’s commands then fall back to sleep. At one point the student muttered, “Cough if you can hear me.” The officers detected a very strong odor of alcohol on the student’s breath and noted other signs of intoxication, including red watery eyes. The student was taken into custody for Public Intoxication and transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 9-03-11, at 8:55 PM. NURSING SCHOOL, 1710 Red River Criminal Trespass Warning: A non-UT subject was observed walking around the building. During the investigation, the officers discovered the subject had established a camp site on the south side of the building. The subject was issued a written Criminal Trespass Warning and was escorted from the area. Occurred on: 9-06-11, at 12:27 AM. PERFORMING ARTS CENTER, 510 East 23rd Street Theft from Person / Fraud: A non-UT subject discovered her wallet, containing personal identification and several credit cards, had been removed from her purse during an event at the PAC. During the investigation, the officers learned several unauthorized purchases had been made. Loss value: Unknown at this time. Occurred on: 9-04-11, between 4:00 PM and 8:00 PM. SAN ANTONIO PARKING GARAGE, 2420 San Antonio Criminal Mischief: A UT student discovered an unknown person had created a 2-inch scratch on the driver’s side rear door. Estimated damage: $100.00. Discovered on: 9-03-11, at 12:30 PM. 200 BLOCK DEAN KEATON Public Intoxication: A UT Police Officer was stopped by a group of students. The students informed the offices about another UT student that was passed out on the sidewalk. During the investigation, the officer learned the student had been riding a Capital Metro bus when he began having an extreme physical reaction to the over consumption of alcohol. The student then passed out. Austin EMS treated the student then transported him to a local area hospital. Occurred on: 9-04-11, at 2:15 AM. 200 BLOCK WEST 6th STREET Public Intoxication: A UT staff member discovered a non-UT subject passed out on the steps of the plaza. The subject was unresponsive to the verbal commands of the staff member. During the investigation, the officers were able to wake the subject and request his ID. The subject handed the officers his credit card. When asked for his wallet, the subject handed the officers a pair of sunglasses. The officers detected a very strong odor of alcohol on the subject’s breath and noted other signs of intoxication. Austin EMS treated the subject at the scene and the subject refused to be transported to a local area hospital. The subject was taken into custody for Public Intoxication and transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 9-04-11, at 3:43 AM. 200 BLOCK WEST 24th STREET Theft: A purple Trek mountain bicycle was reported stolen from the bike racks located on the north side of the building after being secured with a U-shaped lock. During the investigation, the officer learned the victim had secured the front tire of her bicycle to the bike rack. The tire was still secured to the rack. Loss value: $400.00. Occurred between: 8-31-11 and 9-02-11. Crime Prevention Tip: U-locks are effective locks, when used properly. Many of the bicycles made today are equipped with quick-release features. It is never a good idea to secure only the front wheel to the bike rack. 300 BLOCK WEST 27th STREET Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor (2 Counts): A UT Police Officer discovered two UT students walking very slowly in the middle of the street. It was apparent one of the students was having a difficult time walking without being supported. During the investigation, the officer detected a moderate odor of alcohol on the breaths of both students. When asked if they had consumed any adult beverages both replied no. The officer determined both students were under the legal age of 21. Both were issued court appearance citations for Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor and a referral to the Dean of Student’s Office. Occurred on: 9-03-11, at 2:44 AM. 300 BLOCK EAST DEAN KEATON Theft / Possession of Marijuana: The UT Police Department received information a non-UT subject had removed a mountain bicycle from the bicycle racks located on the north side of ECJ. During the investigation, the responding officers observed the bicycle had been placed on the front of a Capital Metro bus. During the investigation, the officers located a non-UT subject who had placed the bicycle on the bus and took him into custody for Theft. During a search of the subject, incidental to his arrest, the officers discovered the subject was in possession of a clear plastic baggie that contained a green leafy substance that tested positive for Marijuana. The subject was transported to Central Booking. Additional charges for Possession of Marijuana were filed. Recovered Loss value: $1,600.00. Occurred on: 9-03-11, at 6:10 AM. 1900 BLOCK SAN JACINTO BLVD. Driving While Intoxicated: A UT staff member entered onto a one-way street during the football game. She was asked to turn around and in doing so almost hit a pedicab. The staff member returned, again driving the wrong way on a one-way street. The staff member was stopped and an off-duty police officer detected a very strong odor of alcohol on the driver’s breath. An on-duty police officer arrived and assisted in the investigation. The officers attempted to administer the Standardized Field Sobriety tests. The staff member was unable to follow simple commands or directions. The staff member was taken into custody for Driving While Intoxicated and transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 9-03-11, at 6:55 PM. 2200 BLOCK SPEEDWAY Public Investigation: A UT Police Officer was flagged down and advised UT student had stumbled and fell down. During the investigation, the officer located the student and detected a very strong odor alcohol on the student’s breath and noted other signs of intoxication. The subject informed the officers that he had attended a fraternity party where he had several glasses of “fruit punch.” The student was taken into custody for Public Intoxication and transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 9-03-11, at 2:11 AM. 2200 BLOCK SPEEDWAY Public Intoxication: A non-UT subject was discovered passed out in the bushes along Speedway. The officers detected a very strong odor of alcohol on the subject’s breath. The subject informed the officers that he was at “Latin Night Saturday,” and attempted to hand the officers his cellular telephone when asked for his ID. The subject was taken into custody for Public Intoxication and transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 9-03-11, at 5:45 AM. 2400 BLOCK SPEEDWAY Possession of Alcohol by a Minor / Evading Arrest: A non-UT subject observed two UT students enter into a closed construction site. When the students observed the non-UT subject approaching them, they decided to leave in a hurry. The responding officers located the students and attempted to stop them. Again they decided it was best to out run the police officers, even after hearing the officer order them to stop. The students attempted to hide on a second floor balcony until the officer located them there. Each student was carrying a container, as they were attempting to leave the area, each disposed of their container. The students jumped from the second level and were taken into custody for Evading Arrest. Each container contained an alcoholic beverage both students were under the age of 21. Both students were transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 9-04-11, at 2:28 AM. UTPD generally schedules a Defensive Driving Class approximately once a month – based on need.
