Campus Watch: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department between Wednesday, 09/07/11 and Thursday, 09/08/11. ADMINISTRATIVE MESSAGE The University of Texas Police Department is currently accepting applications for the next Citizen Police Academy. JESTER WEST RESIDENCE HALL, 201 East 21st Street Public Intoxication: A UT staff member reported a highly intoxicated UT student was in the lobby. During the investigation, the officers located the subject just as she began creating her own personal “Splash Zone.” Austin EMS was contacted to treat the student. EMS transported the student to a local area hospital for further treatment. The intoxicated student had been escorted home by three other female students. They informed the officers the intoxicated student had been found in the parking lot of the Kappa Sigma fraternity house and they decided to escort her home. Occurred on: 9-08-11, at 1:00 AM. MOORE-HILL RESIDENCE HALL, 214 East 21st Street Theft: A grey Schwinn mountain bicycle was reported stolen from the bike racks located on the south side of the building after being secured with a self-locking cable lock. Loss value: $230.00. Occurred between: 8-26-11 and 9-02-11. NURSING SCHOOL, 1710 Red River Criminal Trespass Warning: A non-UT subject was reported lying on the ground near the south side of the building. During the investigation, the officers located the subject sleeping in an established campsite. The officers woke the subject up and issued her a written Criminal Trespass Warning. Occurred on: 9-08-11, at 1:41 AM. PETER T. FLAWN ACADEMIC CENTER, #2 West Mall Criminal Trespass Warning: A non-UT subject entered the lobby area of the building and began talking to the students about government conspiracies and being stalked via the computers. During the investigation, the officers located the subject sitting near the exterior doors. The officers issued the subject a written Criminal Trespass Warning and escorted him from the area. Occurred on: 9-07-11, at 9:15 AM. WEST MALL BUILDING, #3 West Mall Theft: A white Apple MacBook laptop computer was reported stolen after being left unattended and unsecured under a padded bench. During the investigation, the officer learned the victim had placed the laptop under the bench to meet a friend at the Union. Upon his return he discovered his property had been taken. Loss value: $500.00. Occurred on: 9-07-11 between 9:45 AM and 11:00 AM. 200 BLOCK WEST 21st STREET Criminal Trespass Warning: A non-UT subject was observed walking down the middle of the street yelling profanities. During the investigation, the officers located the subject and learned she had been talking on her cellular telephone. When questioned further, the subject informed the officers that she declined and wanted to leave. The officers learned the subject was trying to get home. The officers hailed her a taxi and issued her a written Criminal Trespass Warning. Occurred on: 9-08-11, at 1:02 AM. The University of Texas Police Department responded to 18 Alarm Calls, 2 Call Box Alarms, 2 Suspicious Activity Reports, 1 Suspicious Person Call, 2 EMS Calls, 1 Chemical Spill, and 5 Unsecured Door Report between 09/07/11 and 09/08/11. Emergency Text Message Service The University of Texas at Austin and its police department are responsible for notifying faculty, staff, and students of emergency situations (e.g., inclement weather, building evacuations, campus closures, etc.). The University employs a wide variety of tools to make sure everyone on campus is informed during an emergency event—including text messaging. In order to accomplish emergency text messaging more effectively, the University is collecting cell phone numbers from members of our campus community. Effective August 26, 2009, this database of cell phone numbers will be used for emergency text messages. RAD Program For Women, Now Available (Classes are FREE) Advanced RAD Classes Being Held for RAD Class Graduates The RAD program is a 16-hour course of realistic self-defense tactics and techniques for women that cover assault prevention and risk reduction while progressing on to basic hands-on defense training. http://www.utexas.edu/police/rad/ Defensive Driving: Learn Defensive Driving from a UTPD Police Officer. UTPD generally schedules a Defensive Driving Class approximately once a month – based on need. The classes meet in the University Police Building, Room 1.318, located at 2201 Robert Dedman Dr (east of Memorial Stadium). The cost for the course is $25.00 (check or cash) payable on class date. If paying in cash, please bring the exact amount because change may not be available. You will also need to bring your driver's license. BCAL provides a central resource for UT faculty, students, and staff who may have concerns about the behavior or well-being of another member of the campus community. By calling BCAL at 512-232-5050, callers may talk with trained staff members who will assist the caller in exploring available options and strategies as well as referrals to appropriate campus support networks.
