Campus Watch: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department between Thursday, 09/15/11 and Monday 09/19/11. ENGINEERING SCIENCE BUILDING, 2501 Speedway Criminal Trespass Warning: A non-UT subject was discovered inside a restricted area. During the investigation, the subject informed the officer he was a current student enrolled as a Computer Science major. Once that information was proven false, the subject changed his story. The subject was issued a Criminal Trespass Warning and was escorted from the area. Occurred on: 9-18-11, at 12:17 AM. PERRY-CASTENADA LIBRARY, 101 East 21st Street Criminal Trespass Warning: A UT staff member reported two non-UT subjects were yelling obscenities to several students inside the library. During the investigation, the officers located the subjects on the plaza to the library. One subject approached the officers and stated, “I bet you are here for us.” As the investigation continued, the officers issued both subjects a written Criminal Trespass Warning and escorted them from the area. Occurred on: 9-18-11, at 2:43 PM. 100 BLOCK WEST 21st STREET Public Intoxication: A UT Police Officer observed two UT students attempting to assist a 3rd UT student with his balance and coordination. During the investigation, the officer soon learned the student had been consuming large amounts of alcohol and began “freaking out” and contacted his sober friends to help get him home. The intoxicated student was taken into custody for Public Intoxication and transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 9-17-11, at 1:56 AM. 2200 BLOCK GUADALUPE Public Intoxication: A UT Police Officer discovered a non-UT subject passed out on a sidewalk. The officers were unable to wake the subject up, even with gentle persuasion. The officer detected a very strong odor of alcohol on the subject’s breath. Austin EMS treated the subject at the scene and transported him to a local area hospital. Occurred on: 9-17-11, at 4:36 AM. 2200 BLOCK SAN JACINTO BLVD Public Intoxication: A UT student observed a marked UT Police vehicle and hailed the vehicle in the same manner as one would hail a taxi. When the student approached the officer, she explained she needed a ride to her apartment, but could not provide the officer with directions. The officer detected a very strong odor of alcohol on the student’s breath and noted other signs of intoxication. The student then told the officer that she knew it was dangerous to attempt to cross large intersections. The student was taken into custody for Public Intoxication and transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 9-17-11, at 2:40 AM. 2400 BLOCK NUECES Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor / Suspicious Person: Two non-UT subjects were discovered passed out on the sidewalk. During the investigation, the officers detected a moderate odor of alcohol on their breaths. Austin EMS was notified and treated the subjects at the scene. During the investigation, the subjects informed the officers they had arrived in Austin to celebrate Mexican Independence Day. The subjects were issued court appearance citations for Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor once the officers learned the subjects were under the legal age of 21. Occurred on: 9-17-11, at 7:40 AM. 2500 BLOCK SAN JACINTO BLVD Graffiti: A UT Police Officer discovered words written in black marker on three separate light poles. Estimated damage: $150.00. Discovered on: 9-19-11, at 4:50 AM. The University of Texas Police Department responded to 53 Alarm Calls, 4 Call Box Alarms, 4 Suspicious Activity Reports, 2 Suspicious Person Calls, 5 EMS calls, 4 Burned Out Light, and 25 Unsecured Door Report between 09/15/11 and 09/19/11. Emergency Text Message Service The University of Texas at Austin and its police department are responsible for notifying faculty, staff, and students of emergency situations (e.g., inclement weather, building evacuations, campus closures, etc.). The University employs a wide variety of tools to make sure everyone on campus is informed during an emergency event—including text messaging. In order to accomplish emergency text messaging more effectively, the University is collecting cell phone numbers from members of our campus community. Effective August 26, 2009, this database of cell phone numbers will be used for emergency text messages. RAD Program For Women, Now Available (Classes are FREE) Advanced RAD Classes Being Held for RAD Class Graduates The RAD program is a 16-hour course of realistic self-defense tactics and techniques for women that cover assault prevention and risk reduction while progressing on to basic hands-on defense training. http://www.utexas.edu/police/rad/ Defensive Driving: Learn Defensive Driving from a UTPD Police Officer. UTPD generally schedules a Defensive Driving Class approximately once a month – based on need. The classes meet in the University Police Building, Room 1.318, located at 2201 Robert Dedman Dr (east of Memorial Stadium). The cost for the course is $25.00 (check or cash) payable on class date. If paying in cash, please bring the exact amount because change may not be available. You will also need to bring your driver's license. BCAL provides a central resource for UT faculty, students, and staff who may have concerns about the behavior or well-being of another member of the campus community.
