Campus Watch: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department between Thursday, 09/29/11 and Friday, 09/30/11. National Night Out The University of Texas Police Department would like to invite you to attend the 28th Annual National Night Out. This year UTPD has partnered with UT Student Government, UT Rec Sports, University Apartments, University Area Residence Hall Association and UT Parking and Transportation. The first National Night Out event will be held on October 1st, beginning at 5:00 PM at Brackenridge Apartments, in Jasper Park. The main National Night Out event will be held on October 4th on the Gregory Gym Plaza starting at noon. This year, three additional National Night Out parties are being hosted by the University Area Residence Hall Association at Jester Residence Hall, Waller Creek and Kinsolving from 8:00 PM to 10:00 PM on 10-04-11. Hope to see everyone there. ALMETRIS DUREN HALL, 2624 Whitis Ave Theft: UT staff member observed a non-UT subject cut a self-locking cable lock off a red mountain bicycle in the bike rack located on the northeast side of the dormitory. After cutting the lock, the subject rode away. The staff member notified the police department and officers located the subject and the bicycle. The subject was taken into custody and transported to Central Booking. Recovered value: $150.00. Occurred on: 9-29-11, at 6:55 AM. Crime Prevention Tip: This staff member did a great job in being observant and then reporting the suspicious activity to the Police Department. We will be delivering a Free Pizza on Monday. If you are interested in the Hungry For Justice Program report any and all suspicious persons or activity to the UT Police Department at 512-471-4441. Your phone call could lead to a pizza of your choice. With two exceptions, I cannot go to New York to get you a slice, and I cannot go to Chicago to get you a deep dish. I can however go to any pizzeria in the City of Austin. CAROTHERS RESIDENCE HALL, 2501 Whitis Ave Theft: A UT student reported he had not received a package that had been shipped to him. Loss value: $11.00. Occurred between: 8-31-11 and 9-01-11. CHEMICAL PETROLEUM ENGINEERING BUILDING, 200 East Dean Keeton Theft: A black backpack containing two spiral notebooks and a binder was reported stolen after being left unattended and unsecured inside a 2nd floor classroom. Loss value: $15.00. Occurred on: 9-29-11, between 9:15 AM and 9:20 AM. JESTER WEST RESIDENCE HALL, 201 East 21st Street Theft: A bright orange Dawes mountain bicycle was discovered unsecure and missing a front tire. During the investigation, the officer was able to locate the registered owner. The owner informed the officer he had secured his bicycle to the bike racks located on the west side of Belmont Hall. Upon his return, his bicycle frame and rear tire were missing. The front tire was still secured to the bike rack. Recovered value: $200.00. Occurred on: 9-23-11. JESTER WEST RESIDENCE HALL, 201 East 21st Street Theft: The UT Police Department received notification a non-UT subject had removed a mountain bicycle from the bike racks located on the west side of the building. The officers located the subject several blocks away still riding the mountain bike. The subject was taken into custody for Theft and was transported to Central Booking. Recovered value: $1,350.00. Occurred on: 9-29-11, at 8:40 AM. 300 BLOCK WEST 21st STREET Public Intoxication / Evading Arrest: A UT Police Officer observed a UT student staggering into a building wall then losing his battle with Earth’s gravity after standing back up. The officer attempted to stop the student. The student looked at the officer then turned and took off running. After a short jaunt by the officers the subject was taken into custody. The officers detected a very strong odor of alcohol on the student’s breath and noted other signs of intoxication. The student was transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 9-30-11, at 1:32 AM. 2300 BLOCK GUADALUPE Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor: A UT Police Officer observed a UT student staggering as he attempted to walk in the clearly marked bicycle traffic lane. During the investigation, the officer learned the student had consumed 5 shots of whiskey prior to leaving to go to a dance club located downtown. The officer learned the student was under the legal age of 21 and issued him a field release citation for Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor. Occurred on: 9-30-11, 2:38 AM. The University of Texas Police Department responded to 18 Alarm Calls, 2 Suspicious Activity Reports, 2 Suspicious Person Calls, 2 EMS calls, 1 Burned Out Light Report, and 6 Unsecured Door Report between 09/29/11 and 09/30/11. Emergency Text Message Service The University of Texas at Austin and its police department are responsible for notifying faculty, staff, and students of emergency situations (e.g., inclement weather, building evacuations, campus closures, etc.). The University employs a wide variety of tools to make sure everyone on campus is informed during an emergency event—including text messaging. In order to accomplish emergency text messaging more effectively, the University is collecting cell phone numbers from members of our campus community. Effective August 26, 2009, this database of cell phone numbers will be used for emergency text messages. RAD Program For Women, Now Available (Classes are FREE) Advanced RAD Classes Being Held for RAD Class Graduates The RAD program is a 16-hour course of realistic self-defense tactics and techniques for women that cover assault prevention and risk reduction while progressing on to basic hands-on defense training. http://www.utexas.edu/police/rad/ Defensive Driving: Learn Defensive Driving from a UTPD Police Officer. UTPD generally schedules a Defensive Driving Class approximately once a month – based on need. The classes meet in the University Police Building, Room 1.318, located at 2201 Robert Dedman Dr (east of Memorial Stadium). The cost for the course is $25.00 (check or cash) payable on class date. If paying in cash, please bring the exact amount because change may not be available. You will also need to bring your driver's license. BCAL provides a central resource for UT faculty, students, and staff who may have concerns about the behavior or well-being of another member of the campus community.
