Campus Watch: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department between Friday, 09/30/11 and Monday, 10/03/11. National Night Out / Safety Week Today (October, 3rd 2011) is the first day of UT Safety Week. The Austin Fire Department will be on the Speedway Mall with Matt’s House. AFD will be illustrating how fast a fire can spread within the confines of a dormitory room. The UT Fire Marshal will follow AFD’s presentation with Fire Extinguisher training. This training will also be on the Speedway Mall starting at 11:00 AM. The University of Texas Police Department would like to invite you to attend the 28th Annual National Night Out. This year UTPD has partnered with UT Student Government, UT Rec Sports, University Apartments, University Area Residence Hall Association and UT Parking and Transportation. This year, three additional National Night Out parties are being hosted by the University Area Residence Hall Association at Jester Residence Hall, Waller Creek and Kinsolving from 8:00 PM to 10:00 PM on 10-04-11. ALMETRIS DUREN HALL, 2624 Whitis Ave Theft: A grey Trek mountain bicycle was stolen from the bike racks located on the northeast portion of the building after being secured with a self-locking cable lock. Loss value: $400.00. Occurred between: 9-27-11 and 9-30-11. CREEKSIDE RESIDENCE HALL, 2501 San Jacinto Blvd Public Intoxication: A UT Police Officer discovered a UT student sleeping in the tall grass located beside the building. The officer stopped upon seeing that the student was wearing a large brown furry bear costume. The officer detected a very strong odor of alcohol on the student’s breath. The student’s speech was more of a slurred incoherent growl. The student was not aware of where he was or how he got there. He did realize he was outside of Jelleystone Park. The student was taken into custody for Public Intoxication and transported, not to a local zoo, but to Central Booking. Occurred on: 10-01-11, at 3:25 AM. JESTER WEST RESIDENCE HALL, 201 East 21st Street Criminal Mischief / Disorderly Conduct-Abusive Language: A UT staff member observed a UT student attempting to seek a non-UT subject into the dormitory. The staff member located the student inside her room and discovered the non-UT subject was hiding inside the bathroom. The subject was escorted off the floor and back to the lobby. The staff member informed the subject he could not be escorted into the building by someone of the opposite sex. The subject became upset and left the area, only to return accompanied by a male student. When stopped from entering the building, the non-UT subject became very upset and damaged two signs in a public tirade that included him cussing out the UT staff member. The subject left the area prior to the arrival of the officers. Estimated damage: $10.00. Occurred on: 10-01-11, at 5:32 AM. JESTER WEST RESIDENCE HALL, 201 East 21st Street Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor: A UT Police Officer observed two UT students in Roman togas staggering back and forth as they attempted to walk towards Jester. One student dropped her cellular telephone and had a difficult time picking it. During the investigation, the officers learned the students had paying homage to the Roman God Baccus even though they were under the legal age of 21. The officer detected alcohol on one student’s breath. The officer issued the student a court appearance citation for Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor. Occurred on: 10-02-11, at 2:10 AM. STUDENT SERVICES BUILDING, 100 West Dean Keeton Criminal Trespass: A UT Police Officer discovered a non-UT subject sitting in a massage chair located inside a restricted area on the 5th floor. The officer recognized the subject from prior Criminal Trespass offenses at CMA, JON and CMB. The subject was taken into custody for Criminal Trespass and transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 10-02-11, at 6:13 AM. 1400 BLOCK COLORARDO Driving While Intoxicated: A UT Police Officer observed a blue Honda travelling the wrong way on a posted one-way street. During the traffic investigation, the officer detected a strong odor of alcohol on the non-UT driver’s breath and noted the driver’s eyes were bloodshot. The officer noted the driver lost his balance as he was exiting his vehicle and needed the support of the driver’s door to keep from falling. The officer administered the Standardized Field Sobriety tests to the driver. The driver displayed a number of clues that indicated he was intoxicated. The driver was taken into custody for Driving While Intoxicated and transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 10-02-11, at 1:35 AM. 1600 BLOCK GUADALUPE Criminal Trespass Warning: A non-UT subject notified the police department of a suspicious person after being informed by a nearby bird that the subject was carrying explosives (that is correct a bird). During the investigation, the officers located the suspicious person and learned the subject was carrying water bottles. The officers also located the reporting person next to an emergency callbox. The subject informed the officers that he fights terrorism for a living. The subject was issued a written Criminal Trespass Warning and the officers thanked him for patriotism. Occurred on: 10-01-11, at 5:13 PM. The University of Texas Police Department responded to 73 Alarm Calls, 6 Suspicious Activity Reports, 2 Suspicious Person Calls, 2 EMS calls, 4 Burned Out Light Reports, and 6 Unsecured Door Report between 09/30/11 and 10/03/11.
