Campus Watch: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department between Friday, 10/21/11 and Monday, 10/24/11. ACES BUILDING, 201 East 24th Street Graffiti: Letters written in red spray paint, used in identifying a current but soon to be former Big 12 school, were discovered on the north side of the building. Estimated repair: $100.00. Discovered on: 10-22-11, at 11:00 AM. BRACKENRIDGE DORMITORY, 207 East 21st Street Arson: UT Police Officer responded to a fire inside a second floor trash room. During the investigation, the officers learned the fire had been contained inside a plastic trash bin. Occurred on: 10-23-11, at 6:20 PM. BRAZOS PARKING GARAGE, 200 East Martin Luther King Blvd. Possession of Drug Paraphernalia: A UT Police Officer discovered four UT student sitting in a hole participating in a well rehearsed ritual of “Puff Puff Pass.” During the investigation, one student admitted ownership of a grey glass pipe that had been left in plain view when the officers approached. The officers issued that student a court appearance citation for Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. All four students were referred to the Dean of Students. Occurred on: 10-23-11, at 11:43 PM. CAROTHERS DORMITORY, 2401 Whitis Ave Graffiti: Words written in black and red marker were discovered on west exterior glass doors and a public telephone next to the doors. Both markings were unreadable. Estimated repair: $50.00. Discovered on: 10-23-11, at 1:54 AM. COMMUNICATIONS BUILDING-A, 2504-A Whitis Ave Criminal Trespass / Suspicious Person: A UT student reported a non-UT subject was viewing pornographic images on one of the computers located on the 3rd floor of CMA. The subject was described as: White male, 50 years of age, thin build, wearing sunglasses and a tan ball cap. The responding officers searched the area, but were unable to locate the subject. During the investigation, the officers were able to identify the unknown subject and learned the subject is a known offender who has been arrested several times inside CMA for the same type of activity. Occurred on: 10-23-11, at 11:16 AM. Crime Prevention Tip: This suspect is a REPEAT offender, aside from viewing pornography he is a convicted thief. If you see this subject inside the Communications Building or anywhere else on campus call UTPD immediately. JESTER WEST DORMITORY, 201 East 21st Street Theft: A black Apple iPhone with a clear case was reported stolen after being left unattended inside the cafeteria. During the investigation, the officer learned the victim had left her property unattended when she stepped away to pay for her meal. Loss value: $200.00. Occurred on: 10-22-11 at 2:30 PM. LITTLEFIELD FOUNTAIN, 200 BLOCK West 21st Street Assist Outside Agency: A UT Police Officer discovered two UT students swimming inside the Littlefield Fountain. The officer soon discovered both students were intoxicated, but not to a point they were a danger to themselves or to others. As the investigation continued, the officers learned one student had four outstanding Outside Agency arrest warrants. She was taken into custody and transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 10-22-11, at 2:31 AM. LIVING LEARNING CENTER, 2610 Whitis Ave Suspicious Activity: A UT staff member detected a very strong odor of marijuana coming from a 2nd floor dormitory room. During the investigation, the officers also detected a very strong odor of burning marijuana coming from the same room. After knocking on the door several times, the officers heard several drawers opening and closing quickly. After several more minutes the door open and again the officers detected a very strong odor of burned marijuana inside the room. The officers identified three UT students inside the room. They all claimed to have been watching the television, but could not explain why the room smelled like burned marijuana. All three students were referred to the Dean of Students. Occurred on: 10-21-11, at 10:18 PM. Crime Prevention Tip: The staff inside all of the dormitories received training in the recognition of burning marijuana. None of the Housing and Food staff hesitate to notify the police when they discover the recognizable odor of burning marijuana. This is not only a violation of your Housing and Food contract, but is a violation of State law. Students can be removed from Housing and receive their new abode at Central Booking. LIVING LEARNING CENTER, 2610 Whitis Ave Suspicious Activity: UT Police Officers responded to the 2nd floor on a report of burning marijuana inside the dorm room. During the investigation, the officers indentified the resident as well as his friends. The student informed the officers he had in fact been smoking marijuana, but he had done so outside. When asked how often he smoked marijuana, the student replied, “everyday all day long.” The student stated he got better grades when he smokes than when he is sober. As the investigation continued, the officers were unable to locate any illegal substances inside the room. The student was referred to the Dean of Student’s Office. Occurred on: 10-22-11, at 11:18 PM. MAIN MALL, #1 South Mall Suspicious Activity: A group of unidentified subjects were reported carrying an A&M flag while crossing the mall. The subjects were reportedly wearing tan shorts and dark colored jackets. The responding officers discovered an A&M flag attached to the flag pole. The flag was removed and placed into Lost and Found. Occurred on: 10-22-11, at 8:37 PM. If you or someone you know is missing this item, it is currently located at the UT Police Department. We will be happy to return it, just stop on by. MAIN MALL, #1 South Mall Graffiti: A UT Police Officer discovered red spray paint had been used to draw a XXX image next to a sculpture. Estimated repair: $100.00. Discovered on: 10-22-11, at 11:00 AM. PERRY-CASTANEDA LIBRARY, 101 East 21st Street Public Intoxication / Criminal Trespass Warning: A UT staff member reported a non-UT subject had stumbled into and bounced off of the glass exterior doors. The subject entered the building and stumbled into a work of art located on the 2nd floor. The staff member stated the subject appeared to be intoxicated. The responding officers located the subject passed out inside a 2nd floor lounge. The officers detected a very strong odor of alcohol and noted other signs of intoxication. The subject was confused with the simple questions the officers were asking. The subject was taken into custody for Public Intoxication and transported to Central Booking. In addition to the law enforcement actions taken, the subject was issued a written Criminal Trespass Warning. Occurred on: 10-22-11, at 9:15 AM. SANCHEZ BUILDING, 1912 Speedway Criminal Trespass Warning: A non-UT subject approached staff members and students asking for used textbooks. During the investigation, the officers located the subject on the 5th floor. The subject claimed to be unemployed and was buying used textbooks to re-sell. The subject was issued a written Criminal Trespass Warning and was escorted from the area. Occurred on: 10-21-11, at 10:18 AM. WEAVER POWER PLANT, 305 East 24th Street Graffiti: A UT staff member discovered words written in red spray paint on the west side of the plant. The words written were a Hex on the University of Texas and identified a soon to be former member of the Big 12. The Hex apparently did not work since the lights remained on. Estimated repair: $100.00. Discovered on: 10-22-11, at 4:11 AM. WINSHIP DRAMA BUILDING, 300 East 23rd Street Graffiti: Letters written in red spray paint were discovered on the east exterior wall and along the foot bridge crossing over Waller Creek. Estimated Repair: $350.00. Discovered on: 10-22-11, at 11:15 AM. 200 BLOCK EAST DEAN KEETON Suspicious Person / Assist Outside Agency / Criminal Trespass Warning: A UT Police Officer observed a non-UT subject looking at different bikes in several different bike racks located at ECJ and RLM. During the investigation, the officers soon discovered the subject had an outstanding Outside Agency arrest warrant and was taken into custody and transported to Central Booking. In addition to the law enforcement actions taken, the subject was issued a written Criminal Trespass Warning. Occurred on: 10-23-11, at 1:24 AM. 300 BLOCK WEST 24th STREET Public Intoxication: A UT student was discovered passed out next to a newspaper stand. The officers located the subject and detected a very strong odor of alcohol on the student’s breath from several feet away. The officers were able to get the student to wake up, but when he did, the student had a very confused look on his face. The student did not know where he was, the current date, or where he lived. The student was taken into custody for Public intoxication and transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 10-22-11, at 5:27 AM. 700 BLOCK LAVACA Public Intoxication: A UT staff member observed a non-UT subject staggering between her navigational beacons, until the curb beacon tripped her. The subject fell into the roadway and narrowly missed two on-coming vehicles. During the investigation, the officers detected a very strong odor of alcohol on the subject’s breath and noted other signs of intoxication. The subject did not know where she was or how to get back home. When asked how much alcohol she had consumed, she did not remember. The subject was taken into custody for Public Intoxication and transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 10-22-11, at 2:35 AM. The University of Texas Police Department responded to 61 Alarm Calls, 4 Call Box Alarms, 3 Suspicious Person Call, 3 Suspicious Activity Report, 4 EMS Calls, 1 Fire Call, 5 Welfare calls, 2 Burned Out Light Reports, and 11 Unsecured Door Report between 10/21/11 and 10/24/11.
