Campus Watch: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department between Wednesday, 10/26/11 and Thursday, 10/27/11. COMMUNICATIONS BUILDING-B, 2504-B Whitis Ave Theft: A sociology textbook and a second unidentified textbook were reported stolen after being left unattended inside a 2nd floor student lounge. During the investigation, the victim informed the officer he routinely leaves his books inside the lounge since he spends most of his time in the lounge studying. Loss value: $60.00. Occurred between: 10-23-11 and 10-25-11. Crime Prevention Tip: You may spend a lot of time in an area, but so do the thieves. You may feel comfortable leaving your property unattended because of your familiarity with the area. The thieves are hoping you will create that opportunity for them to be successful. FRANK ERWIN CENTER, 1701 Red River Theft: A red Fuji bicycle was reported stolen from the bike rack located in the south loading dock area. Loss value: $50.00. Occurred on: 10-25-11, between 11:00 AM and 2:30 PM. FRANK ERWIN CENTER, 1701 Red River Theft: A black Apple iPhone and a black Apple Macbook laptop computer were stolen from two unsecured 1st floor dressing rooms. Total loss value: $1,500.00. Occurred between: 10-26-11 at 10:20 PM and 1-0-27-11, at 12:15 AM. PRATHER DORMITORY, 305 East 21st Street Theft: A UT student discovered a wallet sitting unsecured and unattended inside a student study lounge. The student turned the wallet into the front desk Lost and Found. A UT staff member accepted the property. The owner of the wallet was notified that his wallet had been turned in to Lost and Found. The owner of the wallet met the UT staff member and was informed the wallet had not been turned in. During the investigation, the officer learned the student had in fact turned the wallet in to the front desk. UTPD was able to recover the wallet and all of its contents. The property was returned to the owner. Loss value: $365.00. Occurred on: 10-21-11. TOWNES HALL, 727 East Dean Keeton Theft: A purple and white K4S mountain bicycle was reported stolen from the bike racks located on the north side of the building after being secured with a U-shaped lock. During the investigation, the officer learned the victim had secured the bicycle’s front tire to the bike rack. The U-lock worked, the tire was still secured to the rack. Loss value: $150.00. Occurred between: 10-22-11 and 10-25-11. UNION BUILDING, #4 West Mall Theft: A black leather wallet containing a Social Security card, Birth Certificate and personal identification was reported stolen after being left unattended on a patio table. Loss value: $10.00. Occurred on: 10-25-11 at 12:01 AM. Crime Prevention Tip: Some are looking at this case as Oh Hum and small petty theft. This theft has bigger implications for the victim. This victim’s identity was completely stolen. All of the information needed was there, SSN, Birth Certificate, DL. Carry only what you need, one form of identification (Never your Social Security Card), lock everything else up in a safe place. UNION BUILDING, #4 West Mall Theft: A UT staff member reported $80.00 in cash was stolen from a Lost and Found safe located inside a 1st floor office. Occurred between: 10-24-11 and 10-26-11. 2000 BLOCK SPEEDWAY Possession of Marijuana / Possession of Drug Paraphernalia: A UT Police Officer observed a black Honda with a burned out headlamp travelling through campus. During the traffic investigation, the officer detected a very strong odor of burned marijuana emanating from the vehicle as well as from the UT student driver. The officer conducted a search of the vehicle and discovered a glass jar containing a green leafy substance that tested positive for marijuana on the passenger side floorboard. In addition to the jar of marijuana, the officer located a glass pipe and a scale. The driver was taken into custody for Possession of Marijuana / Possession of Drug Paraphernalia and transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 10-27-11, at 2:52 AM. 2000 BLOCK SAN JACINTO BLVD. Theft: A black and red Felt road bike was reported stolen from the bike racks located on the west side of REC Sports after being secured with a self-locking cable lock. Loss value: $1,000.00. Occurred on: 10-26-11, between 10:00 AM and 11:10 AM. The University of Texas Police Department responded to 9 Alarm Calls, 2 Suspicious Person Call, 1 Suspicious Activity Report, 1 EMS Call, 2 Burned Out Lights, and 3 Unsecured Door Report between 10/26/11 and 10/27/11. Emergency Text Message Service The University of Texas at Austin and its police department are responsible for notifying faculty, staff, and students of emergency situations (e.g., inclement weather, building evacuations, campus closures, etc.). The University employs a wide variety of tools to make sure everyone on campus is informed during an emergency event—including text messaging. In order to accomplish emergency text messaging more effectively, the University is collecting cell phone numbers from members of our campus community. Effective August 26, 2009, this database of cell phone numbers will be used for emergency text messages. RAD Program For Women, Now Available (Classes are FREE) Advanced RAD Classes Being Held for RAD Class Graduates The RAD program is a 16-hour course of realistic self-defense tactics and techniques for women that cover assault prevention and risk reduction while progressing on to basic hands-on defense training. http://www.utexas.edu/police/rad/ Defensive Driving: Learn Defensive Driving from a UTPD Police Officer. UTPD generally schedules a Defensive Driving Class approximately once a month – based on need. The classes meet in the University Police Building, Room 1.318, located at 2201 Robert Dedman Dr (east of Memorial Stadium). The cost for the course is $25.00 (check or cash) payable on class date. If paying in cash, please bring the exact amount because change may not be available. You will also need to bring your driver's license.
