Campus Watch: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department between Tuesday, 11/01/11 and Wednesday, 11/02/11. BATTS HALL, 158 West 21st Street Graffiti: Words written in white paint were discovered in separate locations inside Batts and Mezes Hall. The first location was on the side of trashcan. The second location, which had similar writing and white paint, was discovered inside a 1st floor men’s restroom. Estimated Repair: $50.00. Discovered on: 11-01-11, at 9:33 AM. MARY GEARING HALL, 200 West 24th Street Theft: A black Apple iPhone was reported stolen from a 1st floor office. During the investigation, the officer learned the victim had taken the time to register property with the University of Texas Police Department. The officer was able to obtain the serial number of the stolen phone. Loss value: $100.00. Occurred on: 10-31-11, between 3:00 PM and 4:45 PM. Crime Prevention Tip: The staff member did a good job in aiding the officers in the hopeful recovery of her stolen property by taking the time and registering her property on line. You too can assist in getting your stolen property back by taking a few minutes and recording the make, model and serial number of your personal property. During the investigation, the officer learned the victim had utilized a cable (not a self-locking cable lock) and a U-shaped lock to secure her property to the bike rack. The type of device being used allowed the user to loop the cable through different areas of the bicycle then secure the loop to the bike rack using the U-shaped lock. The suspect simply cut the cable and rode off on the bicycle. Loss value: $400.00. Occurred between: 10-28-11 and 11-01-11. Crime Prevention Tip: Many bike shop employees will sell you what they think you need. Some lock manufacturers will package items together allowing you to think you are getting a good deal. We have recommended for years a two-lock locking system. A simply cable that is not equipped with a built in lock is not part of the recommendation. A good way to secure your bicycle is to use the U-lock to secure the frame to the rack and the self-locking cable lock to secure the rear tire to the bike frame. SAN ANTONIO PARKING GARGE, 2420 San Antonio Burglary of Motor Vehicle: A UT Police Officer discovered the driver’s side door of a red Jeep open and the top unzipped. Upon closer inspection, the officer noted the glove box was open and the contents were scattered throughout the vehicle. The owner of the vehicle was contacted and arrived to inspect her vehicle. No personal property was discovered missing at this time. Loss value: 0.00. Occurred between: 10-30-11 and 11-01-11. The University of Texas Police Department responded to 11 Alarm Calls, 1 Suspicious Person Call, 1 Suspicious Activity Report, 1 burned out light, and 2 Unsecured Door Report between 11/01/11 and 11/02/11.
