Campus Watch: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department between Thursday, 11/03/11 and Friday, 11/04/11. The Austin Police Department is asking for your assistance. Please see the attached information regarding the armed robberies occurring in West Campus. The information is also available on our website. www.utexas.edu/police SCAM ALERT The campus has recently experienced a greater number of targeted phishing attacks. Attackers are constantly working to evade our anti-phishing defenses so that they can trick you into providing them with your sensitive personal information (e.g., passwords, account details). Some are even targeting your research data by encouraging you to run software that provides attackers with a backdoor to your system. Seventeen faculty/staff members fell victim to such phishing attacks in October -- up from 2 incidents in September. CHEMICAL PETROLEUM ENGINEERING BUILDING, 200 East Dean Keeton Theft: A red and white Schwinn road bike was stolen from the bike racks located on the east side of the building after being secured with a self-locking cable lock. Loss value: $320.00. Occurred on: 11-02-11, between 5:00 PM and 7:00 PM. J.J. PICKLE RESEARCH CAMPUS, 10,100 Burnet Road Burglary of Motor Vehicle: A UT contractor discovered two sets of Personal Protection Equipment, two Samsung laptop computers, and various miscellaneous tools had been removed from a company truck. During the investigation, the officers learned the vehicle had been left unsecured and unattended on the west side of the MER Building. Loss value: $1,760.00. Occurred on: 11-03-11, between 4:00 PM and 7:00 PM. 300 BLOCK WEST 24th STREET Disorderly Conduct- Fighting: A non-UT subject flagged down a UT Police Officer and informed the officer two UT students were fighting on his shuttle bus. During the investigation, the officers located both combatants. The officers detected a very strong odor of alcohol on the breaths of both students. Both students’ eyes were bloodshot, and not from the fight. Neither student could explain why the fight had started other than it started as a verbal altercation. Both students were issued court appearance citations for Disorderly Conduct- Fighting. Occurred on: 11-04-11, at 2:06 AM. The University of Texas Police Department responded to 15 Alarm Calls, 1 Suspicious Person Call, 1 Suspicious Activity Report, and 2 Unsecured Door Report between 11/03/11 and 11/04/11. Emergency Text Message Service The University of Texas at Austin and its police department are responsible for notifying faculty, staff, and students of emergency situations (e.g., inclement weather, building evacuations, campus closures, etc.). The University employs a wide variety of tools to make sure everyone on campus is informed during an emergency event—including text messaging. In order to accomplish emergency text messaging more effectively, the University is collecting cell phone numbers from members of our campus community. Effective August 26, 2009, this database of cell phone numbers will be used for emergency text messages. RAD Program For Women, Now Available (Classes are FREE) Advanced RAD Classes Being Held for RAD Class Graduates The RAD program is a 16-hour course of realistic self-defense tactics and techniques for women that cover assault prevention and risk reduction while progressing on to basic hands-on defense training. http://www.utexas.edu/police/rad/ Defensive Driving: Learn Defensive Driving from a UTPD Police Officer. UTPD generally schedules a Defensive Driving Class approximately once a month – based on need. The classes meet in the University Police Building, Room 1.318, located at 2201 Robert Dedman Dr (east of Memorial Stadium). The cost for the course is $25.00 (check or cash) payable on class date. If paying in cash, please bring the exact amount because change may not be available. You will also need to bring your driver's license. BCAL provides a central resource for UT faculty, students, and staff who may have concerns about the behavior or well-being of another member of the campus community. By calling BCAL at 512-232-5050, callers may talk with trained staff members who will assist the caller in exploring available options and strategies as well as referrals to appropriate campus support networks.
