Campus Watch: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department between Monday, 11/07/11 and Tuesday, 11/08/11. SCAM ALERT The campus has recently experienced a greater number of targeted phishing attacks. Attackers are constantly working to evade our anti-phishing defenses so that they can trick you into providing them with your sensitive personal information (e.g., passwords, account details). Some are even targeting your research data by encouraging you to run software that provides attackers with a backdoor to your system. Seventeen faculty/staff members fell victim to such phishing attacks in October -- up from 2 incidents in September. PF3 BUILDING C, 4201 Parmer Lane Burglary: Several UT Staff Members reported computer equipment was stolen from their offices over the weekend. Loss value: $3390. Occurred between: 11-03-11, and 11-07-11. GOLDSMITH HALL, 310 Inner Campus Drive Theft: A UT Student reported his black bicycle was stolen. He secured his bicycle to the chain and poles, located at the north end of Goldsmith Hall, that act as a barrier to protect the lawn and hedges. The bicycle was secured with a Master U-lock from the frame to the pole. The unknown suspects cut the chain at the east end, removing the link attached to the pole. They were then able to lift the bicycle off the pole. Loss value: $250. Occurred on 11-07-11, between 11:00-11:15 AM. **Suspects Descriptions: A tall African American male wearing a black shirt and jeans, carrying a black backpack and a tall African American female wearing a white shirt and Capri jeans. The male suspect was seen taking a tool out of the backpack and kneeling down by the bike while the female acted as a lookout. CHEMICAL AND PETROLEUM ENGINEERING BUILDING, 200 East Dean Keeton Street Theft, Possess Substance-Penalty Group 1 <1 Gram (Heroin), and Possess Substance-Penalty Group 2 <1 Gram (MDMA-Ecstasy): UT Police Officers arrested 2 Non-UT Subjects for stealing bicycles from the bike racks on the east side of CPE. On the search, incidental to arrest, the subjects were found to be in possession of heroin and ecstasy. Both subjects were taken into custody and transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 11-07-11, at 4:40 PM. Bus Stop located on the North Curbline of 400 East 23rd Street Theft: A UT Student flagged down a UT Police Officer to report his black Jansport backpack was stolen. The student placed his backpack on the bench, at the bus stop, and then walked over to the bus schedule sign. When he returned to the bench, his backpack was gone. Loss value of backpack and contents: $460. Occurred on: 11-07-11, at 11:36 PM. JESTER ACADEMIC CENTER, 201 East 21st Street Theft: A UT Student reported that her wallet and contents were stolen from the cashier station in “The City Limits.” She placed her wallet on the counter as she packed her purchased items. Several minutes later, she realized she did not have her wallet. She spoke with the staff but was unable to locate her wallet. Loss value: $212. Occurred on 11-07-11, between 10:59 and 11:10 PM. 2300 San Jacinto Boulevard Assist Outside Agency: A UT Student was stopped for speeding. He was traveling 28mph in a 15mph zone. The student had an outstanding traffic warrant with Austin Police Department. He was taken into custody and transported to Central Booking. Occurred on 11-08-11, at 12:48 AM. The University of Texas Police Department responded to 18 Alarm Calls, 2 Suspicious Activity Reports, 1 Chemical Spill Report, 1 Elevator Call, 1 Lost and Found Report, and 1 Key Assist between 11/07/11 and 11/08/11. Registering your property is very helpful in theft investigations and in returning lost property to its rightful owner. Emergency Text Message Service The University of Texas at Austin and its police department are responsible for notifying faculty, staff, and students of emergency situations (e.g., inclement weather, building evacuations, campus closures, etc.). The University employs a wide variety of tools to make sure everyone on campus is informed during an emergency event—including text messaging. In order to accomplish emergency text messaging more effectively, the University is collecting cell phone numbers from members of our campus community. Effective August 26, 2009, this database of cell phone numbers will be used for emergency text messages. RAD Program For Women, Now Available (Classes are FREE) Advanced RAD Classes Being Held for RAD Class Graduates The RAD program is a 16-hour course of realistic self-defense tactics and techniques for women that cover assault prevention and risk reduction while progressing on to basic hands-on defense training. http://www.utexas.edu/police/rad/ Defensive Driving: Learn Defensive Driving from a UTPD Police Officer. UTPD generally schedules a Defensive Driving Class approximately once a month – based on need. The classes meet in the University Police Building, Room 1.318, located at 2201 Robert Dedman Dr (east of Memorial Stadium). The cost for the course is $25.00 (check or cash) payable on class date. If paying in cash, please bring the exact amount because change may not be available. You will also need to bring your driver's license. BCAL provides a central resource for UT faculty, students, and staff who may have concerns about the behavior or well-being of another member of the campus community. By calling BCAL at 512-232-5050, callers may talk with trained staff members who will assist the caller in exploring available options and strategies as well as referrals to appropriate campus support networks.
