Campus Watch: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department between Tuesday, 11/08/11 and Wednesday, 11/09/11. SCAM ALERT The campus has recently experienced a greater number of targeted phishing attacks. Attackers are constantly working to evade our anti-phishing defenses so that they can trick you into providing them with your sensitive personal information (e.g., passwords, account details). Some are even targeting your research data by encouraging you to run software that provides attackers with a backdoor to your system. Seventeen faculty/staff members fell victim to such phishing attacks in October -- up from 2 incidents in September. COLLEGE OF BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION, 2110 Speedway Graffiti: Two phases writing in English and in Spanish were discovered written in black and white paint inside a 5th floor men’s restroom. Estimated repair: $50.00. Discovered on: 11-8-11, at 1:58 PM. GATEWAY APARTMENT COMPLEX, 1616 West 6th Street Criminal Trespass Warning / Assist Outside Agency: A UT Police Officer observed a non-UT subject sleeping in an established campsite set up inside the gazebo. The subject raised his head and looked at the officer as he drove by in a mark patrol vehicle. The subject returned to his slumber as the officer passed by. During the investigation, the subject looked up to the officer as he returned on foot, and told him he was leaving. The officer soon discovered the subject had four outstanding Outside Agency arrest warrants. The subject was taken into custody and transported to Central Booking. In addition to the law enforcement action taken, the subject was issued a written Criminal Trespass Warning. Occurred on: 11-08-11, at 7:51 AM. PERRY-CASTANEDA LIBRARY, 101 East 21st Street Graffiti: Words written in blue and black paint were discovered on a wall inside a 6th floor men’s restroom. Additional paint was discovered on the floor below the wannabe Rembrandt’s attempt at art. Estimated repair: $50.00. Discovered on: 11-8-11, at 8:00 PM. 200 BLOCK EAST 21st STREET Criminal Trespass Warning / Assist Outside Agency: A UT Police Officer observed a non-UT subject riding a pink and purple women’s style bicycle. The subject rode up to a recycling bin and began removing the recyclable materials and placed them inside a plastic bag he had brought with him. During the investigation, the officers asked the subject for his ID card. The subject explained he did not have any identification on him, even though the officers could see an ID card in the outside portion of the subject’s backpack. The officers soon learned the subject had an outstanding Outside Agency arrest warrant. The subject was taken into custody for the outstanding Outside Agency arrest warrant. During a search incidental to his arrest, the officers discovered the subject was in possession of two stolen cellular telephones. Occurred on: 11-08-11, at 2:16 PM. If you or anyone you know is missing the bike described above, please contact the UT Police Department at 512-471-4441 2100 BLOCK SPEEDWAY Theft: A white Felt road bicycle was stolen from the bike racks located on the west side of Gregory Gym after being secured with a self-locking cable lock. Loss value: $450.00. Occurred between: 11-06-11 and 11-09-11. The University of Texas Police Department responded to 15 Alarm Calls, 2 Suspicious Activity Reports, 1 Suspicious Person Report, 3 Burned Out Light Reports, 3 Unsecured Door Reports between 11/08/11 and 11/09-/11. Items with a serial number such as laptops, MP3 players, cell phones, electronics, and bikes are eligible. Registering your property is very helpful in theft investigations and in returning lost property to its rightful owner. Emergency Text Message Service The University of Texas at Austin and its police department are responsible for notifying faculty, staff, and students of emergency situations (e.g., inclement weather, building evacuations, campus closures, etc.). The University employs a wide variety of tools to make sure everyone on campus is informed during an emergency event—including text messaging. In order to accomplish emergency text messaging more effectively, the University is collecting cell phone numbers from members of our campus community. Effective August 26, 2009, this database of cell phone numbers will be used for emergency text messages. RAD Program For Women, Now Available (Classes are FREE) Advanced RAD Classes Being Held for RAD Class Graduates The RAD program is a 16-hour course of realistic self-defense tactics and techniques for women that cover assault prevention and risk reduction while progressing on to basic hands-on defense training. http://www.utexas.edu/police/rad/ Defensive Driving: Learn Defensive Driving from a UTPD Police Officer. UTPD generally schedules a Defensive Driving Class approximately once a month – based on need. The classes meet in the University Police Building, Room 1.318, located at 2201 Robert Dedman Dr (east of Memorial Stadium). The cost for the course is $25.00 (check or cash) payable on class date. If paying in cash, please bring the exact amount because change may not be available. You will also need to bring your driver's license. BCAL provides a central resource for UT faculty, students, and staff who may have concerns about the behavior or well-being of another member of the campus community. By calling BCAL at 512-232-5050, callers may talk with trained staff members who will assist the caller in exploring available options and strategies as well as referrals to appropriate campus support networks.
