Campus Watch: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department between Friday, 11/11/11 and Monday, 11/14/11. ALMETRUS DUREN HALL, 2624 Whitis Ave Theft: The UT Police Department received information a non-UT subject had removed a mountain bicycle from the bike racks located on the northeast side of the building. During the investigation, the officers observed two non-UT subjects attempting to load the bicycle into the back of a white Chevy SUV parked on the west side of Guadalupe. Both subjects were taken into custody for Theft and transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 11-09-11, at 10:30 PM. JESTER WEST DORMITORY, 201 East 21st Street Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor / Theft: A UT staff member discovered a UT student passed out in the hallway outside of the men’s restroom located on the 4th floor. The student was extremely intoxicated and was bleeding from a head wound. The student’s wallet was laying on the floor and appeared to have been emptied. The officers learned the student’s credit card and insurance card had been removed from the wallet. The officers discovered the student did not know where he was, where he had been or how much alcohol he had consumed. Austin EMS was arrived and treated the student at the scene and transported him to a local area hospital for additional treatment. Occurred on: 11-13-11, at 4:35 AM. Crime Prevention Tip: Many intoxicated individuals, once sober, report discovering they are a victim of a crime, namely theft. An intoxicated person is a very easy target of opportunity for a criminal. Due to the intoxicating effects of alcohol you are less likely to be able to defend yourself when attacked or to recognize dangerous situations you may be putting yourself in. JESTER WEST DORMITORY, 201 East 21st Street Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor: A UT staff member reported a UT student was inside the lobby restroom creating a personal “Splash Zone.” During the investigation, the officers located the student and fished her out restroom with the assistance of her sober friend. The officers learned, surprise surprise, the student had attended a party. The student was under the legal age of 21 and was issued a court appearance citation for Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor. The student was released to her sober friend who was willing to take care and custody of her until she sobered up. Occurred on: 11-13-11, at 2:34 AM. JESTER WEST DORMITORY, 201 East 21st Street Possession of Marijuana: A UT staff member detected the odor of burning marijuana coming from a 9th floor dormitory room. During the investigation, the officers confirmed the odor and located two UT students inside the room. The students confirmed they had indeed been smoking inside their room and handed the officers a plastic baggie and two pill bottles containing a green leafy substance that tested positive for marijuana. Both students were issued court appearance citations for Possession of Marijuana. Occurred on: 11-11-11, at 8:55 PM. JESTER WEST DORMITORY, 201 East 21st Street Theft: A black and gold colored Cannondale mountain bicycle was stolen from the bike racks located on the west side of the building after being secured with a self-locking cable lock. Loss value: $800.00. Occurred on: 11-11-11, between 12:01 PM and 6:00 PM. SAN JACINTO RESIDENCE HALL, 309 East 21st Street Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor: A UT Police Officer responded to a report of an intoxicated student depositing alcohol enriched compost in a trashcan. During the investigation, the officers detected a very strong odor of alcohol on the student’s breath and noted other signs of intoxication. The officers learned the student had attended a fraternity party where he had consumed 3 to 4 shots of alcohol. The officers issued the student a court appearance citation for Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor and released him to a sober friend. Occurred on: 11-13-11, at 3:05 AM. UNION BUILDING, 2308 Whitis Ave Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor: A UT student was discovered slumped over the back of a chair sleeping. The officers detected a very strong odor of alcohol on the student’s breath. The student informed the officers that he had been attending a fraternity party located at 27th and Nueces where he had consumed 6 beers. The officers determined the student was under the legal age of 21 and issued him a court appearance citation for Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor. Occurred on: 11-12-11, at 3:40 AM. UNION BUILDING, 2308 Whitis Ave Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor: A UT staff member discovered a UT student having an extreme physical reaction to the over consumption of alcohol in the elevator located on the first floor of the building. The student informed the officers the beer she had consumed was causing her to have the above described reaction. The officers learned the student was under the legal age of 21 and issued her a court appearance citation for Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor. Occurred on: 11-12-11, at 2:46 AM. 100 BLOCK JESTER CIRCLE Driving While Intoxicated / Prohibited Weapons: A UT Police Officer observed a red Ford travelling at a high rate of speed through campus and committing other traffic violations. During the traffic investigation, the officer detected a very strong odor of alcohol inside the passenger compartment. A passenger inside the vehicle informed the officer that he had been the one drinking. The non-UT driver was asked to exit the vehicle, the officer continued to detect the odor of alcohol on the driver’s person from two feet away. The officer administered the Standardized Field Sobriety tests to the driver. The driver displayed a number of clues that indicated he was intoxicated. After being taken into custody for Driving While Intoxicated, the officer discovered a set of brass knuckles attached to the driver’s unbuckled belt. An additional charge of Prohibited Weapons was filed. The driver was transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 11-13-11, at 2:55 AM. 300 BLOCK EAST 21st STREET Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor: A UT Police Officer witnessed a UT student walk into a planter box. After stumbling into the planter box, the student proceeded to lie down inside the box and go to sleep. During the investigation, the officers detected a moderate odor of alcohol on the student’s breath and noted other signs of intoxication. The student informed the officers that she had consumed a very small amount of alcohol. The student was issued a court appearance citation for Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor. Occurred on: 11-13-11, at 3:01 AM. 2100 BLOCK SAN JACINTO BLVD Public Intoxication: A UT student was observed emulating a weeble wobble as he attempted to stumble across a busy street. During the investigation the officers detected a very strong odor of alcohol on the student’s breath and noted other signs of intoxication. The student became defiant towards the officer when he was requested to sit down before he fell over. The student was taken into custody for Public Intoxication and transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 11-12-11, at 1:39 AM. 2700 BLOCK SPEEDWAY Public Intoxication: A UT Police Officer observed a UT student who had fallen and was having a difficult time getting up off of the ground. The officer detected a very strong odor of alcohol on the student’s breath and noted his eyes were bloodshot and watery. The student’s clothes were soiled and disarranged. During the investigation, the student had a difficult time maintaining his balance. When asked how much alcohol he had consumed, the student replied, “To much.” Due to the transporting effects of the adult elixir, the student believed he was a block away from Lamar. The student was taken into custody for Public Intoxication and transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 11-12-11, at 1:33 AM. The University of Texas Police Department responded to 56 Alarm Calls,2 Call Box Alarms, 2 Fire Alarms, 2 Suspicious Activity Report, 5 EMS Calls, 3 Suspicious Person Reports, and12 Unsecured Doors between 11/11/11 and 11/14/11. RAD Program For Women, Now Available (Classes are FREE) Advanced RAD Classes Being Held for RAD Class Graduates The RAD program is a 16-hour course of realistic self-defense tactics and techniques for women that cover assault prevention and risk reduction while progressing on to basic hands-on defense training. http://www.utexas.edu/police/rad/ Defensive Driving: Learn Defensive Driving from a UTPD Police Officer. UTPD generally schedules a Defensive Driving Class approximately once a month – based on need. The classes meet in the University Police Building, Room 1.318, located at 2201 Robert Dedman Dr (east of Memorial Stadium). The cost for the course is $25.00 (check or cash) payable on class date. If paying in cash, please bring the exact amount because change may not be available. You will also need to bring your driver's license.
