Campus Watch: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department between Wednesday, 11/23/11 and Monday, 11/28/11. BURDINE HALL, 2505 University Ave Criminal Trespass / Failure to Identify: A UT staff member recognized a non-UT subject inside a restricted 5th floor area and notified the police department. During the investigation, the staff member stated she knew the subject had been given a Criminal Trespass Warning and had been told not to return by UTPD. During the investigation, the officers searched the area and located a subject who matched the description given by the staff member. The subject informed the officers that he was leaving. The officers explained he was not free to go. During the investigation, the subject gave the officers a false name and date of birth, than explained he was from New York. After the officers were unable to confirm the subject’s information, the officers retrieved a BOLO with the subject’s correct information. The subject was taken into custody for Criminal Trespass and Failure to Identify and transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 11-23-11, at 4:40 PM. NEURAL MOLECULAR SCIENCE BUILDING, 2506 Speedway Suspicious Person: A UT staff member encountered an unknown subject wandering the 2nd floor looking into several rooms. The staff member asked the subject if he needed help. The subject mumbled his response. Again the staff member asked if he needed help, the subject replied he was looking for a bathroom even though he passed several walking down the hall. When the subject entered an elevator, the staff member notified the police department. The responding officers searched the area. The unknown subject was described as: Hispanic male, 5’-11”, 180 pounds with a muscular build. Subject was last seen wearing a dark colored coat and possibly carrying a backpack. Occurred on: 11-23-11, at 12:21 PM. PRATHER DORMITORY, 305 East 21st Street Burglary of Habitation: An Apple iPad was discovered stolen from a secured 3rd floor dormitory room. During the investigation, the officers learned the iPad had been left in plain view on top of a desk. Loss value: $250.00. Occurred between: 11-23-11 and 11-26-11. WALTER WEBB HALL, 2500 Guadalupe Graffiti: Words written in white spray paint were discovered on the east exterior wall of the building. Estimated repair: $100.00. Discovered on: 11-26-11, at 12:30 AM. 2100 BLOCK SPEEDWAY Criminal Trespass Warning / Assist Outside Agency: Two UT students reported being followed by a non-UT subject. As the students were talking to the officers, the subject walked up. During the investigation, the officers learned the subject had been following the students since they were walking along Guadalupe. The subject informed the officers that he was asking the students for directions to his house. As the investigation continued the officers learned the subject had 6 outstanding Outside Agency arrest warrants for offenses including Theft and Public Intoxication. The subject was taken into custody for the outstanding Outside Agency arrest warrants and transported to Central Booking. In addition to the law enforcement actions taken, the subject was issued a written Criminal Trespass Warning. Occurred on: 11-26-11, at 1:28 PM. Crime Prevention Tip: So what would you do if you were being followed? What is your game plan? Go back to the last place you felt safe and notify the police department. Walk into a store and ask the manager to contact the police because you are being followed. Most important lesson is to have a game plan in mind. The University of Texas Police Department responded to 49 Alarm Calls, 3 Call box alarms, 3 Suspicious Activity Reports, 5 Suspicious Person Reports, 2 Burned Out Light reports, and 20 Unsecured Doors between 11/23/11 and 11/28/11. Emergency Text Message Service The University of Texas at Austin and its police department are responsible for notifying faculty, staff, and students of emergency situations (e.g., inclement weather, building evacuations, campus closures, etc.). The University employs a wide variety of tools to make sure everyone on campus is informed during an emergency event—including text messaging. In order to accomplish emergency text messaging more effectively, the University is collecting cell phone numbers from members of our campus community. Effective August 26, 2009, this database of cell phone numbers will be used for emergency text messages. RAD Program For Women, Now Available (Classes are FREE) Advanced RAD Classes Being Held for RAD Class Graduates The RAD program is a 16-hour course of realistic self-defense tactics and techniques for women that cover assault prevention and risk reduction while progressing on to basic hands-on defense training. http://www.utexas.edu/police/rad/ Defensive Driving: Learn Defensive Driving from a UTPD Police Officer. UTPD generally schedules a Defensive Driving Class approximately once a month – based on need. The classes meet in the University Police Building, Room 1.318, located at 2201 Robert Dedman Dr (east of Memorial Stadium). The cost for the course is $25.00 (check or cash) payable on class date. If paying in cash, please bring the exact amount because change may not be available. You will also need to bring your driver's license. BCAL provides a central resource for UT faculty, students, and staff who may have concerns about the behavior or well-being of another member of the campus community.
